On May 6, 1946, Art married Ramona Mittlesteadt in a joint ceremony with Irvin and Eva Mittlesteadt in Baraboo. They raised seven children: Richard (Janice) Nachtigal, James Nachtigal, Reedsburg; Cindy (John) Nelson, of Jupiter, FL; Wendy (Joe) Gates, of LaValle; Tim Nachtigal, of Reedsburg; Tom (Sherri) Nachtigal, of Winona, MN; Todd Nachtigal, of Reedsburg. Art was blessed with and survived by eight grandchildren: Brett Nachtigal, Anne (Jay) Bishop, Tammy Nachtigal, Becky Walker, J.J. (Jamie) Gates, Katie Nachtigal, Noah Nachtigal, and Tyler Nachtigal; along with many great-grandchildren; one sister, Thelma Hartje, one sister-in-law, Emma Mittlesteadt, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona; parents; his son, Richard; three brothers and sister-in-laws, Kenneth (Dorothy), Bill (Helen), Clyde (Betty) Nachtigal; five sisters and brother-in-laws, Bernice (Gerhart) Schultz, Vivian (Evan) Ritzer, Gladys (Arvine) Ziech, Lena (Jack) Steinmetz, Clara (Vern) Westedt; brother-in-law, Marvin Hartje; two brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws Russell (Dolores) Mittlesteadt, Rupert (Lucille) Mittlesteadt; and brother-in-law John Mittlesteadt.

Art served in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard, 1943-1946. Upon discharge he started farming on the Nachtigal home farm in LaValle. In addition to farming, he worked various jobs including Chief of Police for LaValle; Tri-State Breeders and Grede Foundry.

Art was passionate about his large garden and woodworking in his shop.

A memorial service with full military honors will be conducted at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son: Richard; and her three brothers: Russell, Rupert (Lucille) and John Mittlesteadt. Ramona worked as a nurse's aide for many years and was heavily involved with Special Olympics. In her spare time, she enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables from their large garden. She will also be remembered for her baking, especially at Christmas time with her delicious pepper nuts, orange cookies and her cut-out cookies. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Pastor David Glesne officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery at LaValle. There will be a visitation from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg and after 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Special Olympics or to Casa de Oakes in Reedsburg. The family would like to offer sincere thanks for the kindness shown to Ramona by Willis Spring Acres and Casa de Oakes. The Hoof Funeral Home is serving the family.

Survivors include her husband, Arold; two daughters: Doreen Hamburg, and her husband, Todd Holtz and Darla Hamburg Smith, and her husband, Tim; six grandchildren: Clay Wethal, Sonja Lange, Timothy Smith, Billy, Alison and Connor Holtz; two sisters: Elvira Moon and Elda (LeRoy) Riedel; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a niece: Debra Viljevac and brother-in-law: Earl Moon. Kathy enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing and the company of her cat, Missy. She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Sauk County Retired Teachers and a former member of the Reedsburg Senior Seranaders. She is survived by a special cousin: Catherine (Joe) Schmitz, of Hillpoint; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buff, on October 27, 2013 and her parents. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Reedsburg with Father David Carrano officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Hoof Funeral Home in Reedsburg where the parish rosary will be prayed at 7:00 P.M.
