  • In 1917 GEHRT ENGELBRECT
Gehrt Engelbrecht, on of the well-known and successful famers in Meadowntownship, Plymouth county, was born in Holstein, Germany on December 25, 1851, the son of Gehrt and Katie (Severin) Engelbrecht. The parents were also natives of that country and there received their education in the public schools, and after their marriage established themselves on a farm where they resided to the end of their lives, dying in their native land some years ago. They were active members of the German Lutheran church and took much interest in all church work, and were prominent in the local society in the community in which they lived and where they were held in the highest regard and esteem by all. They were the parents of ten children as follow: Jacob, Gehrt, Anna, Jacob, John, Frank, Herman, Henry and two who died in infancy. Of the children, three came to America, Henry, Frank and Gehrt. Henry is a successful farmer in Meadow township and Frank is a resident of Mitchell, South Dakota.
Gehrt Engelbrecht was educated in the public schools of his native country and there grew to manhood, and remained a resident of that country until he was twenty-eight years of age. In 1880 he came to America. On his arrival in the United States he proceeded to Holstein, Wisconsin, where he remained for one year and was engaged as a farm hand. He then located in Benton county, Iowa, where he remained for five years and then moved to Sioux county, where he lived for twelve years.
In 1891 Gehrt Engelbrecht was united in marriage to Amanda Wickhorst, a native of Holstein, Germany, and who came to America, the year that she was married. To this union ten children have been born as follow: William, Katie, John, Annie, Charles, Herman, Emil, Alfred, Alma and Vera. William married Anna Grapke and is a successful farmer and stockman of Sioux county, Iowa; Katie is the wife of Henry Rann, a successful and well-to-do farmer of Meadow township, Plymouth county; John is working on a farm in Sioux county; Annie is the wife of George Kantz, a well-known resident of Canostota, South Dakota, and the other children are at home with the parents.
Soon after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Engelbrecht established their home in Sioux county and were there engaged in general farming for ten years. They then came to Plymouth county, where they purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in section 15, Meadow township. The tract was at that time partially improved and developed, but since that time the present improvements have for the most part been placed by Mr. Engelbrecht, and today he has one of the nicely improved places in the township. The farm has been increased and he is now the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of splendid land, all under a high state of cultivation. He is engaged in general farming and stock raising, in which he has been most successful. He raises many fine Hereford and Shorthorn cattle, Chester White hogs and draft horses, and is recognized as one of the successful stockmen of the county. He cultivates about one hundred and ten acres of corn and ninety acres of small grain each year, the balance of his farm being in pasture and hay.
Mr. and Mrs. Engelbrecht are active members of the Evangelical Lutheran church at Remsen and have ever taken an active part in all church work, and are prominent in the social life of the community. Mr. Engelbrecht is identified with the Republican party and has always taken much interest in...

Marriage3 February 1939Luella G. Stene married Oscar Holthe, son of Odin Holthe and Johanna Solberg, on 3 February 1939 at Union, South Dakota, County of Residence: Union. Post Office: Alcester.1
Death17 December 2016Luella G. Stene died on 17 December 2016 at age 98 Luella (Stene) Holthe was born July 31, 1918 to Ole and Lily (Jamtgaard) Stene in rural Union County, South Dakota and passed away December 17, 2016 at 98 years. She graduated from Starr School. After finishing school, a number of families used her homemaking skills as she worked around Union County.

She met her future husband (Oscar Holthe) at a dance, and they later married on February 4, 1939 at the Roseni Lutheran Church parsonage. She and Oscar farmed north of Spink, SD for over 40 years before retiring to Alcester in 1979. Luella milked, tended a large garden, raised chickens, and partnered with her husband in all farm activities. She was known for being a great cook (especially her pies and bread), homemaker, and seamstress – sewing for her children, grandchildren, and for herself. At the time of her death, she still wore outfits that she had sewn herself. Oscar passed away in 1987.

As a resident of Alcester, Luella became a volunteer and received many honors for serving as a volunteer at Morningside Manor, the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, Dakota Diner, VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries, and RSVP. She was also a member of the Quilting Guild at church, Nite and Gals, and the Norwegian Birthday Club. Luella was a long-time member of Roseni, and now Nathanael Lutheran.

Those left who knew her love and loyalty are her sons: Ronald and Barbara Holthe of Logan, IA, Marvin Holthe of Sioux Falls, and Richard Holthe of Independence, MO; and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Christopher Holthe (Nate, Andrew) of Independence, MO, Jennifer Holthe (Mindy) of Vermillion, Katie Holthe (Lily, Tristian) of Independence, MO, Todd Holthe (Shaylee) of Sioux Falls, Michael Vanbeek of Sioux Falls, Wendy and Jeramie Lohan (Kaitlyn, Nicholas, Zachariah) of Sioux Falls, Lisa Vanbeek and Sean Gleason of West Pueblo, CO, Jonathan and Kelli Holthe (Bria, Emmy) of Muscatine, IA, Sarah Holthe of Irwin, IA, and Serena Holthe and Roscoe Jones, Jr. of Washington, DC. Luella is also survived by her sisters: Doris and Jack Hamilton of Sioux Falls and Beverly Huey of Apache Junction, AZ. She will be missed by many cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as friends.

Her parents, husband Oscar, and siblings Owen Stene, Eldo (Lovalice) Stene, Mildred (Ladelle) Briggle, Vivian (Don) Albers, Norma (Don) Sundby, and Bob Huey preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be 2pm Wednesday, December, 21, 2016 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester, with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester. Visitation will be 4-8pm Tuesday at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester, with the family present from 5-7pm.
