Death18 April 1992John Holman Simpson died on 18 April 1992 at age 76 John H. "Curly" Simpson 's friends recall him as a man who was always ready to lend a helping a hand. For one Army paratrooper, it was a life-saving experience.

Mr. Simpson was a crew member of an Air Force plane dropping paratroopers when one soldier's chute became tangled in the plane's tail, his wife, Shirley Morrett Simpson , recalled.

"He (the soldier) was unconscious, and they formed a life line and got him back inside the plane. He lived, and my husband received the Air Medal for that," she said.

Mr. Simpson , 76, of Ft. Thomas, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East.

"He was a really outgoing person who was always there to lend a hand when you needed help," said Mr. Simpson 's longtime friend and fishing partner, Don Plummer of Goshen, Ohio.

A pilot who served on active duty in both World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Simpson retired about 10 years ago as a service representative for the Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati.

"He worked there for more than 30 years, even before he went into the service. He traveled Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and West Virginia, and was also a service school instructor for mechanics who worked for the Ford dealers," said Mrs. Simpson .

Her husband also was retired from the Air Force Reserve, she said.

Along with flying - Mr. Simpson flew multi-engine aircraft including "Flying Boxcars" - her husband's love was fishing, Mrs. Simpson said.

"He loved to fish. He traveled all over to fish, including Lake Erie, Texas, Alabama and Florida. He was in Alaska when he was in the service and loved the fishing there. He always said he wanted to live in Alaska," his wife said.

Mr. Simpson was a member of Robert Burns Masonic Lodge, Newport.

Other survivors include a son, James Simpson , Ft. Thomas; a daughter, Pamela Julian of Burlington; stepsons, Bill and Kevin Tolle of Ft. Thomas; brothers, B.F. Simpson of Covington and Thomas Simpson of Logan Township, Ind; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
