Joseph Tremau Sippy

M, b. 1754, d. 22 February 1819
Name TypeDateDescription
Name VariationJoseph Tremau Sippy was also known as Tremau.
  • Joseph Tremau Sippy was born in 1754 at Near Bordeaux, Gironde, LeCroisic, France.
  • He married Lucretia Johnson on 20 February 1787 at Berkeley, Virginia.
  • Joseph Tremau Sippy died on 22 February 1819 at Mount Jackson, Beaver, Pennsylvania.
Joseph Tremau, a veritable giant at 6'2" tall, served under Lafayette in the American Revolutionary War and was wounded in the foot at the Battle of Yorktown. He was sent to a makeshift hospital in a private residence which was run by Dr. John Johnson and his wife, Dr. Elizabeth (Lenneham) Johnson...parents of Lucretia Johnson. He was a paid soldier and was to go home to France after the war, but he fell in love with Lucretia and didn't want to go back.
To avoid the possibility of prison for not returning to France, Joseph changed his surname to "SIPPY", a form of his mother's maiden name of "SIPPO" (supposedly of Italian origin), and stayed in America and married Lucretia. Joseph's sword is currently in the possession of Robert Ross Bowlby, a descendant of Joseph's granddaughter, Phoebe Sippy, and has been seen and photographed by Roy Allen "Al" Hudgens, Jr., in April of 2000.
