George Edward Hamblin

M, b. 7 August 1918, d. 29 September 2009
Life EventDateDescription
Birth7 August 1918George Edward Hamblin was born on 7 August 1918.
Death29 September 2009He died on 29 September 2009 at age 91 George Edward Hamblin, born August 7, 1918 in Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away September 29, 2009 in Brush, Colorado at the Ebenezer Nursing Home. His parents were Robert and Ruth (George) Hamblin. He attended school in Marshalltown, graduating from high school in 1936. Further studies were then attained at both Marshalltown Junior College and Central Iowa Business College.
George married Teresene Cather in La Jolla, California on January 31, 1941. George and Teresene celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this last January 2009. To this union, four children were born: George, Jr., Sandra, Robert, and Lisa.
George was a veteran of World War II where he served in the United States Army teaching aircraft identification for approximately four years. He was stationed in California and Hawaii, where he was honorably discharged in the Fall of 1945.
Upon his discharge, George returned to Marshalltown, Iowa to work for the Rural Electric Administration (REA), as an office manager and was transferred to Colorado in 1948. In 1950, George worked for Y.W. Electric in Akron before being appointed Postmaster on August 2, 1954. George served as the Colorado State President of National Association of Postmasters for two terms and, due to health reasons, retired as Postmaster in September 1977. During retirement, always one for study, George attended Emily Griffith Opportunity School for two years to learn clock repair.
During the Cold War, George organized the Ground Observer Corp. with volunteers serving 24 hours a day; thus, earning a commendation from the United States Air Force for his efforts. George also served on the Selective Service Board and the Civil Defense Board.
Always interested in civic problems, he was instrumental in arranging for the Colorado Plains Regional Airstrip in Akron in 1992 and building the Akron Senior and Community Center in 1984-85. George worked as the bailiff for the Washington County courts for approximately fifteen years and also served on the Akron Town Council for two terms.
George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the National Association of Postmasters, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. George was a former member of the Lions, Akron Chamber of Commerce, and the Old Car Club until health reasons forced retirement.
Inherently a problem solver, it was common knowledge that if George could not personally do a job or resolve a situation, that he always knew who or where to get the answers to accomplish same.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruth Hamblin; his daughter, Sandra Hertzwig; and his son, Robert Hamblin. George is survived by wife, Teresene; son, George Jr. and his wife Rosemarie of Golden, Co; as well as his daughter, Lisa Vandenberg of Littleton, CO. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to the Akron Senior and Community Center as well as St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Rosary service will be held at St. Joseph’s on Thursday October 8 at 7pm. Memorial service will be held at St. Joseph’s on Friday October 9 at 10am followed by inurnment services at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Brenner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
