Death31 May 1896Jerome J. Nickey died on 31 May 1896 at Texas Jerome J. Nickey. Died at Kerryville, Texas, At The Age of 50 Years. Interment Spring Green, Wisconsin.

The news of the death of Jerome J. Nickey at Kerryville, Texas, was received by his son, Frank H., on Monday, and occurred early Sunday morning. Jerome J. Nickey was in his fiftieth year and up to within two years ago was considered a hale and robust man but exposure in Butte (Mont.) hastened the clutch of consumption which he inherited and was lying dormant in his system. Thus for over the last two years he has been battling against the disease and but for his nerve would have been a dead man twelve months ago. Last February he went south to Texas, hoping the climate would relieve him some but it seems not to have greatly aided his defenses against the implacable foe and death finally triumphed.

J.J. Nickey had many friends in Montana, he was generous to a fault, bouyant and hopeful, and knew no such word as fail. His mortal sickness was the only misfortune that he could not successfully battle against and the disease was surely aided by his regret in being too weak to put up another fight for fortune.

He was born at Spring Green, Wisconsin, fifty years ago, married early and in 1882 reached Billings (Mont.) where he at once asserted the leadership with which his energy possessed him. He took the lead in numerous enterprises, built several business houses, the Grand hotel, and a fine residence which was occupied by his family, a wife and two sons and two daughters, all now grown up, until the last year when all but his eldest son removed to Minneapolis. He was particularly unfortunate in mining speculation but never acknowledged himself beaten. While he had a dollar no one need ever want, but like those generous minds he laid up scant treasure on earth.

Upon the mound that marks his last resting place in Spring Hill cemetery, we, who knew and loved him, forget all but the good that was in him. Great heart thy rest has come!
(Yellowstone Valley Recorder, Billings, MT, 3 June 1896).
