Fay and her family have lived in Hill City and Rapid City, SD, and in Tecumseh, MI. Fay and Sam lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL, for many of their retirement years. Sam died in 2000, just a few months before their 68th anniversary. Fay began attending Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD, after most of her family was raised. She graduated with honors and went on to teach in the Rapid City Schools for 15 years. Fay taught at General Beadle School, Garfield, E.B. Bergquist and most of the time at Pinedale Elementary School. Fay and Sam were members of the United Methodist Church in Rapid City and of Coronado Community First United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where she remained active until 2002. In 2002 Fay sold her Florida home and moved back to Rapid City. Fay lived at Echo Ridge, first in the Lodge and later in the Manor. She was living at Fountain Springs Health Center when she died. Fay was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; her parents, Dottie and Ernest Savey; and three sons, David Lee, Nicholas Lynn and Gary Lee. Also preceding her in death were her sister, Ilamae Savey Edwards, and her brother, Don Savey. Survivors include: daughters: Janet Fay (Lawrence) Solano of Rapid City; Marlene Kay (Conrad) Bowman of Broadview Heights, OH; a son: Douglas Glen (Marcie) of Big Spring, Texas, and Gary's widow, Catherine Lykken, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Surviving siblings include Olive (Ted) Jacobs, Rapid City; and Clyde (Sybil) Savey, New Smyrna Beach, FL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Fay started quilting the first year of her marriage when her mother-in-law taught her to quilt. Fay made a quilt for her and her husband as their own Christmas gift, while her mother-in-law worked on the other gift quilts. Fay began quilting full time following her retirement. She has made and given away many quilts. She designed and made a "Family Quilt" telling the story of the Sam and Fay Lykken Family. Fay was a charter member of the Ocean View Nursing Home Auxiliary in Florida. Fay also volunteered as an aide in the New Smyrna Beach schools. She continued to volunteer until shortly before her move to South Dakota in 2002. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, on Monday, November 6 at 1 p.m. with Sister Susan Pohl officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to The Hospice of the Hills or the American Cancer Society.
