Loretta was born May 26, 1931 in Davenport, Iowa, to Ole and Anna (Hansen) Wevik. She spent her childhood in Beresford where she attended and graduated from school. She attended Augustana College and Moody Bible Institute. She married Donald Swanstrom on December 22, 1950. They lived in various states in the Midwest, including Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota. Loretta invited Jesus Christ to be her personal Savior in 1973. He did a remarkable work in her life, and she joyfully served Him for many years playing piano, teaching Sunday School, serving on various boards and committees, and leading ladies' Bible studies. She also taught piano lessons, did counseling, and served on the Advisory Council for Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska. She had a wonderful gift of hospitality and enjoyed inviting others to share her excellent cooking. Most of all, she enjoyed studying God's word and spending time with her family. Those who will cherish her memory are her husband, Don; five children: Seth (Becky) Swanstrom of Yankton; Mary (Don) Morman of Missoula, Montana; Pam (Bill) Cameron of Juneau, Wisconsin; Sarah (Doug) Wiebe of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Sandra (Blake) Hall of Omaha, Nebraska; 22 grandchildren: Mark, Chris, Ryan, and Jacob Swanstrom; Joe, Dan, Tim and Christine Morman, Laura Rehbein, and Sarah Neal; Matthew, Caleb, Christine, Daniel, Susanna and David Cameron; Phillip, Jordan and Hannah Wiebe; and Amy, Ethan and Stefanie Hall; two great-grandchildren: Ainsley Swanstrom and Devion Rehbein; two sisters: Betty (Wendell) Holmes of Omaha and Suzanne Young of Jerseyville, Illinois; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was a past member of the Roseni Lutheran Church in rural Beresford and a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Hurst.

Survivors include his wife, three daughters, six grandchildren, and two brothers.

Services begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Roseni Lutheran Church in rural Beresford with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Alcester.

Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. Carol Bosworth Midwest.

Fay Lovera Savey was born on June 6, 1915, in Sargent County, North Dakota. In 1923, her family moved to Rapid City, South Dakota. Fay graduated from Rapid City High School in 1932. She married Salmer (Sam) Lykken on September 3, 1932. Their first child, a son, died shortly after birth. There were 5 more children born to the union. Fay and her family have lived in Hill City and Rapid City, SD, and in Tecumseh, MI. Fay and Sam lived in New Smyrna Beach, FL, for many of their retirement years. Sam died in 2000, just a few months before their 68th anniversary. Fay began attending Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD, after most of her family was raised. She graduated with honors and went on to teach in the Rapid City Schools for 15 years. Fay taught at General Beadle School, Garfield, E.B. Bergquist and most of the time at Pinedale Elementary School. Fay and Sam were members of the United Methodist Church in Rapid City and of Coronado Community First United Methodist Church in New Smyrna Beach, FL, where she remained active until 2002. In 2002 Fay sold her Florida home and moved back to Rapid City. Fay lived at Echo Ridge, first in the Lodge and later in the Manor. She was living at Fountain Springs Health Center when she died. Fay was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; her parents, Dottie and Ernest Savey; and three sons, David Lee, Nicholas Lynn and Gary Lee. Also preceding her in death were her sister, Ilamae Savey Edwards, and her brother, Don Savey. Survivors include: daughters: Janet Fay (Lawrence) Solano of Rapid City; Marlene Kay (Conrad) Bowman of Broadview Heights, OH; a son: Douglas Glen (Marcie) of Big Spring, Texas, and Gary's widow, Catherine Lykken, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Surviving siblings include Olive (Ted) Jacobs, Rapid City; and Clyde (Sybil) Savey, New Smyrna Beach, FL. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Fay started quilting the first year of her marriage when her mother-in-law taught her to quilt. Fay made a quilt for her and her husband as their own Christmas gift, while her mother-in-law worked on the other gift quilts. Fay began quilting full time following her retirement. She has made and given away many quilts. She designed and made a "Family Quilt" telling the story of the Sam and Fay Lykken Family. Fay was a charter member of the Ocean View Nursing Home Auxiliary in Florida. Fay also volunteered as an aide in the New Smyrna Beach schools. She continued to volunteer until shortly before her move to South Dakota in 2002. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, on Monday, November 6 at 1 p.m. with Sister Susan Pohl officiating. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to The Hospice of the Hills or the American Cancer Society.

Death3 December 2006Janet Fay Lykken died on 3 December 2006 at age 72 Janet Fay Solano died at home on Sunday evening, December 3, 2006, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Janet was born on August 20, 1934, in Rapid City, South Dakota, to Salmer and Fay (Savey) Lykken. Growing up, she lived in Hill City, Tecumseh, Michigan, and Rapid City. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1952 and from the National School of Business in 1953. She then worked as a bookkeeper at Knecht Lumber Company. She married Lawrence Solano on November 11, 1954. From this union, six children were born. Janet was always a supportive, loving wife. Janet was multi-talented and held three careers throughout her life. First she stayed at home and raised six active children. Once all the children were in school, she worked for the Rapid City Public School System Food Service Program for 25 years. After retirement, Janet kept busy as a Hospice volunteer, a Rapid City Public Library volunteer, and even took up the piano. She was a member of the School Nutrition Association of South Dakota (past president), Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the Catholic Daughters of America. Janet is predeceased by her parents, Salmer and Fay Lykken, and her brothers, Nicholas and Gary. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 52 years, Lawrence Solano, her sons Daniel (Carolyn), David (Karen), Rapid City, and daughters, Diane (Tom) Wickham, Fontana, CA, Marie (John) Varvel, Valerie (Shane) Olney and Laurie Solano, Rapid City. Her 11 grandchildren who Janet cherished are Nathan, Scott, John, Jennifer, Angela, Todd, Aaron, T.J., Miranda, Colton, and Carter. She is also survived by her sister, Marlene (Conrad) Bowman, Broadview Heights, OH, her brother Douglas (Marcie) Lykken, Big Spring, Texas, and her sister-in-law, Catherine Lykken, Steamboat Springs, CO. Janet was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who encouraged all to love one another. She influenced the many lives she touched as she was a caring, accepting, and compassionate person. Her family was the most important part of her life. She especially enjoyed supporting all of her children and grandchildren in their activities. She also took pleasure in going out for breakfast and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee. Mrs. Lykken, the former Esther Bormann, was born Sept. 2, 1917 at Canistota. She attended public schools in that area and was graduated from General Beadle College at Madison. She taught rural grade school near Canistata for a few semesters and then took nurses training. She was nursing supervisor at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls for five years.

She was married March 18, 1952 in Canistota. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Alcester.

Survivors include the widower; two sons, Eldean and Eldon of Alcester; one daughter, Mrs. Betsy Ann Johnson of Alcester; a brother, William of Sioux Falls; and three sisters, Mrs. Arnold (Margaret) Tieszen and Mrs. Edwin (Dorothy) Brown, both of Canistota, and Mrs. Virgil (Myrtle) Rex of Mount Vernon, Wash.

Barbara Jean (Amundsen) Lykken was born January 15, 1928 in Alcester, South Dakota to parents Sverre Amundsen and Marie (Meinjohans) Amundsen. She died July 8, 2010 at Morningside Care Center in Alcester at the age of 82 years, five months and 23 days. Barbara attended Finn country school and Alcester High. She had to quit high school before graduating to help her mother run their restaurant in Alcester, SD. She married George K. Lykken on April 17, 1946 at Roseni Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in the area and Barbara worked for a short time at Custom Coil. In 1974 they moved to Alcester. After moving into Alcester, Barbara began working at Morningside Manor initially as Head Cook and after going back to school to become a Certified Dietician, she became the Dietician at the Manor. In May of 1984 they moved to Sedona, AZ where they managed Sunset Village Mobile Home Park until George's death on December 26, 1988. Barbara continued as Assistant Manager until November 1, 1989. From 1990 to 1999 she worked in sales at the Naja Gift Shop in Sedona. Barbara's health began declining in 2001 and in November 2004, her family completed Barbara's request to get her back to Morningside Manor in Alcester if she needed to have long term care. Barbara was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church and confirmed at Nathanael Lutheran Church. She was a member of Roseni until March 1988 when her membership was transferred to Christ Lutheran Church in Sedona, AZ. She was active in the Lutheran Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary. She loved dancing, playing cards, supporting her children's activities in school, church and 4-H, spending time with her grandchildren and helping others. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Ordean Amundsen, Bonnie Amundsen Rhode, and Jerry Amundson. Among those who gratefully shared her life are her children, Linda (Mrs. Douglas) Sandvall of Sedona, AZ and Arlo (Maurieva) Lykken of Alcester, SD; five grandchildren, Stephanie Sandvall-Young, Eric Sandvall, Derek Lykken, Andrea Dykstra and Rebecca Lykken; three great-grandchildren, Quinn Young, Gessica Sandvall and Brook Sandvall; and many nieces and nephews.
