------------------------
August Klemme, a resident of northwest Plymouth county for more than fifty years, passed away at his home in Akron, Tuesday, February 13, 1940 at 10 p. m., death being due to advanced age. To him the past five years were of weakness and ailment, but he bore it patiently and with content. He attained the ripe age of 82 years, 9 months, and 17 days. Mr. Klemme was born April 27, 1857, thirty-five miles south of Chicago, in Will county, Illinois. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Zion Lutheran church in Lake county, Illinois [sic - should be Indiana]. He grew to young manhood in that vicinity. In 1881 he came to Iowa and bought a farm in Preston township, Plymouth county. He then returned to Chicago and worked at the carpenter trade until 1885. On November 26, 1885, he entered holy matrimony with Minnie Buehre at the Ev. Lutheran church in Indiana. In 1886 they moved to his farm in Plymouth county and engaged in farming for many years. The couple was blessed with five children, of whom three preceded their father in death, as did also one brother and two sisters. In 1910, Mr. and Mrs. Klemme retired from active farming and moved to Akron, which has since remained their home. Mr. Klemme leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife; two sons, Harry Klemme and Alfred Klemme, both residing east of here, near Ruble; ten grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Emma Boehner, and two brothers, Fred and Charles Klemme, of Crete, Illinois; also many other relatives and a host of friends. A man of upright and honorable character, industrious habits, kindly and sympathetic, a devoted husband and father and a good neighbor, he will be sincerely missed in the community in which he lived for so many years. He was a consistent Christian and was one of the sixteen charter members of the Preston Township Lutheran church. Funeral services were Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the home of his son, Harry Klemme, and at 2 o'clock at the Preston Township Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Karl Fenske, the pastor. There was a large attendance. The pallbearers were six grandsons, Walter, Embert, Erwin, Wilmer, Vernon and Gordon Klemme. Interment was in the Preston Township Lutheran church cemetery. Relatives who came from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Walter Frerichs, of Worthingon, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Art Rehborg and family and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Rehborg and family, of Harris, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buehre and Mrs. Clarence Lemcke, of Sioux City.

  • August Klemme lived near Crete, Illinois and Minnie Buehre lived near Dyer, Indiana. They were married on Thanksgiving day in 1885. They came to Preston township, Plymouth county to live on a farm August had purchased from the railroad for $7.50. They began their married life putting up buildings and breaking the sod. August had been a carpenter and built many houses in Chicago, Illinois before coming to Iowa, for which he was paid $1.50 a day. In Preston township he built houses for some of the neighbors. He farmed rented land while he worked at breaking his own farm. August and Minnie were the parents of four children: Edwin, born in 1886; Harry, born in 1888; Alfred, born in 1894; and Louise, born in 1897. A fifth child died at birth. The family attended church in Le Mars, Iowa. They would have to take the rack off the running gear and replace it with a wagon box to attend church and stopped along the way home to eat the dinner they took along with them. Going to church took most of the day. Feeling the need of a church near by, August and a few German neighbors founded a church congregation, St. John's Lutheran church of Preston township. In due time one of the charter members donated land and a building was erected. Harry Klemme married Anna Schmidt, daughter of Folkert and Meta Schmidt, in January, 1910. They were the parents of five children: Ella born in March, 1913; Embert born in May, 1915; Lenora born in January, 1917; Wilma born in November, 1919; and Vernon born in May, 1921. The Harry Klemmes lived in Johnson township until 1945 when they ran a service station and restaurant in Perkins Corner north of Sioux Center, Iowa. For two years they ran a cabin court at Arnolds Park, Iowa, and they lived in Morningside for a short time. They later built a house in Akron and at age 93 Harry still lives in the same house. Edwin Klemme married Anna Bubs in September, 1910. Alfred Klemme was in the photography business. He later owned and ran the Majestic Theater. He married Rosina Bubs in 1917 and began farming the home place in 1918. August and Minnie Klemme moved to Akron in 1910. They lived in the house at 341 Sargent Street, now the home of the Dean Weyen family.
