He was seven years old when he moved with his parents to a farm on the south side of Sioux Falls. Clifford graduated from Harrisburg High School and later served in World War II. He was a member of the 191st Ordinance Company and was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Phillipines from 1942-1946.

In 1947 Clifford married Mildred (Millie) Dunkelberger. They established their home near Shindler where Cliff farmed, attended GI school and sold seed corn. He helped establish the Lincoln County rural water system and was one of the last members of the Simmons school board before it closed. Clifford was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls for 73 years and was a member of the VFW of Sioux Falls since his discharge from the army. He loved farming and continued to talk about it every chance he got. But his greatest love was his family, whom he surrounded himself with at every opportunity.


Clifford is survived by six children, four daughters, Linda (Leo) Dannen, Lennox SD, Sandi Larson Sioux Falls, Pam Osthus (Bill Fischer) Sioux Falls, Cindy (Lyle) Tripp, Sioux Falls, and two sons, Rodney (Sharon) Osthus, Olivia, Minnesota and Robert(Jina) Osthus, Albuquerque, New Mexico; 11 grandchildren, Rick, Brian and Cathy Dannen, Sarah Tedesco, Katie Tuthill, Thomas and Anne Osthus, Joel and Rachel Tripp, Wyatt and Morgan Osthus; two great grandchildren, Nicholas Tedesco, Morgan Dannen; one step grandchild, Alicia Schunneman; two sisters, Eleanor Slack and Shirley Joffer; two brothers, Lloyd and Arlen. In addition to his parents, his wife, Mildred, three brothers, Orville, Milton, Donald, and granddaughter, Jill,preceded him in death.

In earlier years Eleanor was an active member of Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. She was currently a member of Shalom Lutheran Church, Joy Circle and the Country Cousins Extension Club.

Eleanor was a gracious hostess. Everyone was welcome in her home and she always made sure they were comfortable and well fed. Eleanor will be remembered by her family as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter and sister and for her unique laughter which gave everyone a smile.

Grateful for having shared her life are four children, Janice Moulton and her husband, Alfred, Harrisburg, SD, Betty Kielman and her husband, Russ, Brandon, SD, Carol Broughton and her fiancé, Dwayne Bauder, Worthing, SD, David Slack and his wife, Debra, Fargo, ND; 12 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Joffer and her husband, Earl, Parker, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, John, on November 12, 1993; her son, Dennis; her parents; and six brothers, Milton, Donald, Orville, Clifford, Lloyd and Arlen.

Arlen was born on August 21, 1926 in Hooker, SD to Ben and Emma Osthus. He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1945 and served his country during WWII from 1945-1947. Arlen was united in marriage to Beatrice D. Moen in Baltic, SD on October 12, 1947. He retired in 1982 from John Morrell and Co. after 35 years of employment. Arlen was a member of First Lutheran Church, Prairie Travelers and Holiday Ramblers, of which he was past president of The Rambling Pheasants Chapter. Following his retirement, Arlen and Beatrice enjoyed 21 years of wintering in Mission, TX, traveling and spending time with friends. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing and playing pool.
Grateful for sharing his life is his wife of 60 years, Beatrice; children, Sharon (Russ) Morris, Bruce Osthus and Karen (Bill O'Neill) Osthus; daughter-in-law, Tracie Osthus; grandchildren, Mike (Sara) Olson and Scott and David Osthus; step-grandchildren, Steve (Erin) Morris and Cindy (Chris) Vaske; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Emma Olson; step-great-grandchildren, Carson and Cooper Vaske; sisters, Shirley (Earl) Joffer and Eleanor Slack; and many other relatives and friends.
