  • JOHN QUINN. In the farming district of Washington Township are many prosperous and progressive men who believe that the happiest life as well as the most independent one is to be lived on the farm. Prominent among these is John Quinn. Mr. Quinn has been identified with Sauk County almost all his life, and his present home is a farm that was developed partly by his father and partly by himself, from the woods and wilderness which once held sway all over this section of Wisconsin. Mr. Quinn was born in Dodge County, Wisconsin, May 21, 1853, but came with his parents to a farm in Washington Township on May 9, 1854. He is a son of James and Anna (Riley) Quinn, both natives of Ireland, his father a native of County Wexford and his mother of Queens County. His father was born November 1, 1816. James Quinn first married a Miss Laughlin, and there were two children of that union, Michael and Elizabeth. By his marriage to Anna Riley there was one child, John. Mrs. James Quinn was also twice married, her first husband having been Thomas Cahill. Her two children by that union were James and Michael, both now deceased. James Quinn came to America and settled in Dodge County in 1846, two years before Wisconsin became a state. After moving to Sauk County he applied his industrious labors to the development and clearing of his land, and was a man of prominence in that locality. He was one of the organizers of his home school district, in which he held offices, and was also treasurer. His death occurred September 24, 1875, and he was buried in old St. Patrick's Cemetery in Bear Creek Township. His
wife, mother of John Quinn, died October 28, 1865, and was buried at Keysville, Wisconsin. Mr. John Quinn grew up in the locality where he now lives and has witnessed the entire transformation of this district from woods and unproductive places into a smiling landscape of farms and comfortable homes. Mr. Quinn married for his first wife Mary Ahern, daughter of Daniel and Hannah Ahern, of Washington Township. Mr. Quinn's children are all by his first wife, their names being James, Mark, Bessie, Lawrence, John, Edna and George. Of these two are now deceased, Mark and Bessie. For his second wife Mr. Quinn married Mary Gavin, daughter of Daniel and Bridget Gayin, of Bear Creek, Wisconsin. Mrs. Quinn has two brothers, William and Michael. William married Margaret Lee and Michael married Johanna Anglium. The John Quinn farm in Washington Township comprises 140 acres. His postoffice is Loganville. Mr. Quinn has carried out a program of farming here for more than forty years, and is one of the milk and cream producers of the section. He keeps on an average about twenty-four head of cattle, and at present his dairy herd consists of sixteen fine Holsteins. Mr. Quinn is a democrat in politics and an active member of the Catholic Church. He has given much of his time to public office, having been a member of the town board, and is present chairman of that board, and has been town assessor and town clerk. He has also been a trustee in his home church.

Life EventDateDescription
Birth8 March 1834Jacob Fenner was born on 8 March 1834 at Calhoun, Illinois, also reported as 07 Apr 1834 and 07 Mar 1834.
He was the son of Jacob Fenner and Elizabeth Levica Marsh.
Marriage6 November 1864Jacob Fenner married Eunice O. Young, daughter of George W. Young and Mary (?), on 6 November 1864.
Marriage22 October 1865Jacob Fenner married Phoebe Daniels, daughter of Nelson Daniels and Lovinia Reeves, on 22 October 1865 at Arena, Iowa, Wisconsin, by Justice of the Peace Isaac Farwell.
Death9 March 1924Jacob Fenner died on 9 March 1924 at Hot Springs, Aurora, South Dakota, at age 90 A large number of friends gathered at the Methodist church last Friday afternoon to pay their last respects to Jacob Fenner, for many years a resident of this community and one of the last of the veterans who fought through the Civil War. The remains were escorted from the house to the church by the colors firing squad and members of the local post of the American Legion and by a large number of Odd Fellows from the local camp, in which order Mr. Fenner had been a member for 58 years. At the church Rev. Tagg gave a very fitting and appropriate sermon for the occasion. Music was rendered by a choir composed of Mrs. Hoff, Mrs. Luovinger, Mr. Hilton and Mr. Walter Dodds. From the church the remains were escorted to the cemetery by the Legion and Odd Fellows besides many friends. After the burial services the military honors of three volleys were fired, after which Taps was blown. Mr. Fenner had been in very poor health for a long time and his death while not unexpected still was a grevious shock to his relatives, especially the faithful wife who has been his constant companion through all. Many friends express sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. OBITUARY: Jacob Fenner was born March 7th, 1834, in Calhoun County, Ill., where he lived with his parents until a young man, when he joined the army June 1st, 1861. He went into active service with Company B 6th Mo. Regiment of Infantry, with which he saw three years of strenuous service, being engaged in the notable battles of Champion, Ill, and Vicksburg. It was at Vicksburg that he lost a limb by cannon ball and was discharged October 14th, because of this wound. Mr. Fenner never let his lameness interfere with his purpose to make a living and do his share of the world's work. On October 22nd, 1865, Mr. Fenner married Miss Phoeba Daniels at Arena, Wis., and to this union were born seven children: Stella, George, Jacob, Edward, Nellie, John and Jennie. Stella and Jacob died in infancy, but the other children grew to young manhood and womanhood with their parents. It was in August 1895 that Nellie succumbed to sickness at the age of seventeen and George was drowned in June 1896, leaving but the three children and the faithful wife to survive the husband and father. Of the children, Edward and John live at White Lake and Nellie lives in Tacoma, Washington. Coming to South Dakota in 1884, Mr. Fenner has ever been known as a hard worker and a good citizen, and through many hardships and losses has fought courageously on until at the age of ninety years and one day, he ceased that battle and in the presence of the devoted wife, who had long given him the most tender care, he passed away. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, three children and grandchildren and other relatives, besides the many friends who will all remember his courage and ever miss him.
