Bill was a wonderful man, well-loved and well-liked. He earned a BA in Mathematics from Loras College and an MA in Mathematics from Duquesne University. Bill retired from UD in 1999 after 36 years of service, and continued to teach part-time at UD until 2007 Bill is survived by his wife of 38 years Beverly; sons: Patrick, wife Ronda, daughter Shelley; Edward; Daniel, wife Marina, daughter Shannon; stepson Duane, wife Rose; stepdaughter Elaine, husband Mark. Brother Patrick D, resides in Lawrence Kansas with wife, Vicki. Professor Friel taught FORTRAN in the Computer Science Department at University of Dayton, and was one of the early adopters of MAPLE in UD's calculus classrooms. He served many years as Marshal and Head Marshal for UD. Bill was very active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), of which he was a member for more than 50 years. He held elected office in the Ohio Section of the MAA as President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Treasurer. Bill donated his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at Wright State University School of Medicine. Memorial gifts may be sent to Hospice or a charity of choice. Brookhaven Nursing Home gave Bill compassionate care. Very kind, efficient, and willing staff helped Bill, family and friends.

Born in Boone, Mr. Friel lived in Des Moines 47 years. He was employed by Iowa-Des Moines Supply, Inc., and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and St. Peter's Holy Name Society. Survivors include his wife, Bernice; two sons, J. William of Dayton, Ohio, and Patrick of Omaha; two brothers, George of Joliet, Ill., and Francis of Monmouth, Ore; two sisters, Mary O'Connell of Des Moines and Catherine King of Phoenix, Ariz., and six grandchildren. A rosary will be recited tonight at 8:30 at Hamilton's Funeral Home.

Jerry was united in marriage on September 11, 1948, to the former Gay Southcombe and they spent 60 happy years of their lives together. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed be his family and friends. Mr. Friel was a member of the Plattville United Methodist Church. Jerry proudly served in the United States Army. Mr. Friel was the very first and still serving, Mayor of Plattville, IL. Jerry is survived by his wife; Gay Friel, his children; Mark (Lisa) Friel, of Plattville, IL, and Melissa (David) Smith, of Plattville, IL, his grandchildren; Aaron Friel, of Morris, IL, Amanda, Megan and Katie (Friel), of Plattville, IL, and Joel, Amy and Ryan Smith, of Plattville, IL, his brother, Jack (Dorothy) Friel, of Yorkville, IL, as well as, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; George J. and Florence Friel, his sons; Michael Friel and Matthew Friel in infancy, and his grandson, David Friel. Friends may visit from 4:00 until 8:00 PM on Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 410 E. Countryside Pwky, in Yorkville, IL. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at the Plattville United Methodist Church, 13025 Church Road, in Plattville, IL with Reverend Donna Trinko, officiating. Interment will follow in the Plattville Cemetery, in Plattville, IL. Arrangements made by Nelson Funeral Homes & Crematory.
