He farmed in Beecher, IL as a young man then owned and operated Matthies Trucking and Matthies Consignment Auction. He attended and was a graduate of the Art Feller College of Auctioneers. He then went to work at the Ford Motor Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights, IL retiring in 1977. He and Hilda then moved to Three Lakes, WI where they owned and managed the Triangle Motel for 15 years. They then moved back to Peotone where they really enjoyed life. He was Past President of the Peotone Sportsman's Club and former trustee of the Immanuel United Church of Christ of Peotone where he was a member. He was a former member of the Bradley Moose Lodge, a former member of the Northern Lights Snowmobile Club and Three Lakes Unlimited of Three Lakes, WI. He enjoyed playing cards, horseshoes, bowling, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

He is survived by his faithful wife of 69 years, Hilda (nee Wolkow) Matthies of Peoto. He is also survived by his two children; Pat Harms Misner (Gerald) of Bourbonnais, and William H. (Bonnie) Matthies of Peotone, IL; and 3 grandchildren; Brent (Kris) Harms of Manteno, Nathan Matthies, and Meghan Matthies both of Peotone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters; Blondie Bory, Alice Schroeder, and Esther Huberts.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, 2009 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home in Peotone. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home. Interment will be at Peotone Cemetery.

Clarence Henry Heldt was 100 years old, born Sept. 6, 1916, the only child of Henry and Emilie (Sennholtz) Heldt. He was born and lived in the same house his entire life. He married Kathryn Hoevet on May 27, 1943. She preceded him in death on Feb. 5, 2003.

He only attended eight years of school in a one-room school east of Grant Park, but he became an avid reader and it was a passion he never relinquished.


His entire life was devoted to farming and his family. He served his community by serving on the Grant Park School Board and the Grant Park Elevator Board, on which he was secretary.

Clarence served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a private first class and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded and awarded a Purple Heart. He was captured by the Germans, spending the last six months of the war as a POW.

Surviving are his children, Bruce (Alyce) Heldt, of Bourbonnais, Richard (Sandi) Heldt, of Grant Park, and Susan (Michael) Williamson, of Grant Park; grandchildren, Chad Heldt, Kyle Heldt, Jared Heldt and Erin and Tyler Williamson; and great-grandchildren, Reed and Reagan Heldt.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. funeral services at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Grant Park.

Memorials may be given towards St. Peter's United Church of Christ.
