Death26 November 2006Gertrude Wilhelmine Buum died on 26 November 2006 at South Dakota at age 89 Gertrude W. Woodard, age 89, of Longvalley, South Dakota, died Sunday evening, November 26, 2006, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Gertrude W. Buum was born on May 17, 1917, in White River, South Dakota, the daughter of Chris and Sophia (Wegner) Buum. Her early years were spent on a farm just outside of White River where she resided with her parents and three siblings, Shirley, Orin, and Joe. She lost her father Chris when she was very young and times were difficult for her mother Sophia during the depression years. Gertie, as she was affectionately known, attended high school in Onega, Kansas, and lived with an aunt and uncle during those years.

Upon graduation, she returned to White River and met Irvine Richardson of Longvalley, South Dakota. They were married on March 1, 1941, in Valentine, Nebraska. Gertie and Irvine lived in Murdo, South Dakota, for a few years and then moved to Longvalley, where they raised their family of four children, Carol, Vernon, Reed, and Mary.

After Irvine’s death in 1972, Gertie married Hiram Woodard and they resided on the Woodard place near Longvalley for over twenty-five years, until moving to Kadoka to the Gateway Apartments and later the Kadoka Care Center. Hiram preceded her in death in February 2002.

Gertie was a very hard working, industrious lady and was known as an excellent cook. She was instrumental in helping establish a faith center for the Longvalley community in the 1950’s which is still a very vital part of the area. Having a place of worship meant a great deal to her and she was active for many years in the Ladies Aid, Circle, and held all of the church offices of the Longvalley Community Church.

Grateful for having shared her life include her daughters Carol Richardson Duval and her husband Gary of Helena, Montana, and Mary Richardson Tieskotter of Preston, Minnesota; two sons Vernon Richardson and his wife Roxy of Longvalley, and Reed Richardson and his wife Joyce of Longvalley; six grandsons; two granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; her brother Orin Buum and his wife Lois of Rapid City; a sister Shirley Anderson of Kadoka; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her first husband Irvine Richardson; her second husband Hiram Woodard; a son Roland Joe Richardson; her parents; a brother Joe Buum; two grandsons Darin and Kevin Duval; and a son-in-law William Tieskotter.

Visitation was held from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 30, at the Rush Funeral Chapel in Kadoka, and one hour preceding the services at the church on Friday.

Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 1, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Longvalley, with Pastor Ann Schlossnagle officiating.

Interment was in the Longvalley Community Cemetery.

FAUCETT, WILLIAM H. - Ranking high among the far-sighted and discerning men who are actively advancing the material interest of Houghton county is William H. Faucett senior member of the firm of Faucett Bros. & Guck, of Calumet, and a prominent resident of Laurium. A native of Michigan, he was born April 8, 1860, at the Meadow Mine, Keweenaw County, Michigan.

His parents, James and Frances Fisher Faucett were born, reared and married in Ireland, county Fermanagh. Leaving their native land in 1840 they came across the ocean, the point of destination being Michigan, whose rich mines had attracted much attention. He lived here several years, also at the Meadow and Harlbolt mines, moving in the `60 's to
Eagle River. Here his wife died at a comparatively early age in 1870, and he passed away in 1905 in the eightieth year of his age. Five children were born of the union, namely ; Robert C., who died in 1906 ; Jennie, who died in 1901 ; William H; Annie, wife of W. G. Rielly of Butte, Montana ; and Carrie, wife of James D. Kinnee, of Houghton, Michigan.

Leaving at an early age, the public school of Eagle River where he obtained his early education, William H. Faucett entered the Fuse Factory which was conducted by Uren and Blight. From this place he was employed at the Eagle River Hotel which was owned and managed by Col. W. B. Wright with whom he remained three years. Mr. Faucett was next employed by Mr. Judd P. North of the Calumet Hotel. After one year as
surfman in the United States Life Saving Station at the Portage Lake Ship Canal he returned to the employ of Mr. North. The years 1886 and parts of `87 and `88 saw Mr. Faucett located at the Calumet and Hecla smelting works at South Lake Linden now known as Hubble. In the Spring of 1888, under Cleaveland's administration, the Ontonagon and Brule River Land Grant was opened up for settlement to homesteaders. Hither, Mr. Faucett went, later returning to Calumet, finding employment at the
Calumet and Hecla mine. Leaving the mine in 1889 Mr. Faucett spent six months at Valparaiso University subsequently being employed respectively at Lake Linden in Ferninad Bolz & J. Slonaker's retail meat market and at Iron Mountain in Cruze & Co. 's market in which firm his brother Robert C. Faucett was a partner. Mr. Faucett later worked for the wholesale meat firm of Nast and Karger of Houghton, remaining until
October, 1892, when he located at Calumet and began his labors in the interest of the Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association of Hancock being employed by Dunstan & Halichette. At the end of six months he severed his connection with this firm opening the first real estate office in Houghton county. He continued the building and loan and at the same time solicited insurance for the Frank A. Douglas Agency
of Houghton and later added general insurance to his own business. The insurance, real estate and building and loan business Mr. Faucett has pursued continuously since, Robert C. Faucett, who died a few years ago joining him in the business in 1899 and Fredrick K. Guck being admitted to the partnership in 1902. The firm under the name of Faucett Bros. & Guck has since carried on an extensive real estate and insurance
business. The enterprising company has been identified with various real estate transactions, among them having been the sub-dividing and platting of the Village of Ameek, Keweenaw county, and at preset they are busily engaged in the surveying and platting of Forty acres of land formerly owned by Mr. John Phillips, the tract being now known as the Village of Phillips located near Allouez, Houghton county. Mr Faucett
is also a director of the Northern Michigan Building and Loan Association of Hancock.
In 1899 Mr. Faucette was united in marriage with Miss Jessie Fuller, daughter of O. E. Fuller, an Episcopal clergyman, of Midland, Michigan, and into their household four children have been born, namely : Rachel, William H., Jr, who died at the age of two and one-half years ; Virginia, and Emily Cornelia.
