She married Marvin Sommervold on August 31, 1940. The couple resided most of their married life on a farm south of Beresford where she stayed busy as a mother and homemaker. She also worked for the City of Beresford for 3 years. The couple moved into town four years ago. Joyce became a resident of Bethesda Nursing Home in December of 2009 and has lived there until the present time. Joyce was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Rockfield Lutheran Church and later became a member of Roseni Lutheran where she was involved with the Ladies Aid, Bible study and the quilting group. Her hobbies and interests included gardening, sewing and being a wonderful cook. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Brian, sister Alta Peterson, brother Kenneth Fedderson, a sister Delores in infancy, sisters-in-law DeVonna and Clarice Fedderson, brothers-in-law Robert Postin and Franklin Peterson, and grandson-in-law Matt Kleinhesselink. Her survivors include her husband Marvin Sommervold of Beresford three sons, Merlyn Sommervold and wife Sherran of Chancellor, Arvid Sommervold and wife Debra of Brookings, and Steven Sommervold and wife Carol of Alcester; 8 grandchildren, Brent (Cheryl) Sommervold, Bonnie Kleinhesselink and fiance John, Barry (Tina) Sommervold, Angela (John) Maher, Susan (Adam) Forma, Mark Sommervold, Matt (Jessica) Sommervold, and Chad Sommervold and fiance Brianna; 11 great grandchildren, Mitchell, Britney, Wyatt, Justice, Jersey, Brayden, Lexi, Jordan, Max, Natalie and Jordan; a sister Ardis Postin, Cheyenne, WY and a brother Clayton Fedderson, Beresford; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2:00PM, Monday, June 28, 2010 at Roseni Lutheran Church, rural Beresford with burial at the church cemetery. She was born April 4, 1921 in Volin, South Dakota to the late Arthur and Ida Sylliaasen. She grew up in the home of her Aunt Anna and Uncle Olaf Aune, whom she called Ma and Pa. She married Lloyd Eldon Lykken on June 27, 1942. To that happy union were born seven children. She worked by cleaning homes and a soda jerk in New Jersey. She also worked at the Lutheran Home in Arlington Heights.
She was a wonderful, beautiful, loving, caring wife, mother and grandmother who taught her children about the love of Jesus. She loved her family immensely. She always put her family first. She was an excellent baker and cook, always making delicious meals and special treats for her family. She loved to crochet, knit, sew, embroider and read. She was faithful going to church. She loved singing in church, listening to God’s word and seeing her church family. Prayer was a big part of her life. She always said “Loving Father care for me.” Ina’s favorite color was blue. She loved ice cream and soup. She always looked beautiful and yellow was a wonderful color on her. She loved extra thick malts, chocolate and Coco Balls from Fannie May were her favorite. She loved tuna and rueben sandwiches and her homemade chocolate meringue pie. She made the best homemade macaroni and pinwheel cookies. She loved to crochet and made many afghans for her children and grandchildren. Ina loved collecting angels which were displayed throughout her home. She loved celebrating birthdays and holidays with her family. Her favorite hymn was “In the Garden.” She was a gentle spirit and always treated everyone she met with love and kindness. She never said negative about anyone. She loved to share laughter with others. She will be dearly missed.
Funeral services and interment will be Saturday, May 20 at Trondhjem Lutheran Church, Volin, SD.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and funeral will follow at 11 a.m.
Ina was the beloved wife of the late Lloyd Eldon Lykken; devoted mother of Mark Lykken, Luke (Heidi) Lykken, Pastor David (Roselyn) Lykken, Darla (the late Mark) Prentice, James (Michelle) Lykken, Dawn (Kevin) Schlueter and the late Larry (Sandy) Lykken; caring grandmother of Kristina, Erika, Gwen, Nathan, Lloyd, Kristian, Emily, Lukie, Roy, Tyler, Jennifer, Joy, Jamie, Joshua, Jessica, Sanja and the late Christopher and Easton; loving great-grandmother of Aria, Emma, Maximus, Claire, Keira, Averli, Annaliese, Jordan, Courtney, Aneesa, Jazmyn, Isaiah, Everett, Jeff, Rae and James; dear sister of the late Mildred, Eleanor, Opal and Eline.

He married Dorothy M. Mader in June 1944 and they moved to Portland in 1946 where he worked in construction and later as a truck driver. In 1980 he joined Dorothy and they owned and operated a small collection agency. He retired in 1985 and enjoyed traveling and camping with their fifth wheel.

He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church for many years and served on that council. He was a member of the McMinnville Elks, the Crazy 8 Square Dance Club where was he an officer for many years, and the RV 8ers Recreational group. In 1994 he served as the assistant wagon master traveling the Oregon Trail from St. Louis, Mo., to Portland for the National Square Dance Convention.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by his two daughters, Sondra Tackett of Vancouver and Linda (Ed) Wilken of Oregon City; one sister, Barbara Dierks of Myrtle Beach, S.C; one brother, Tom Long of Estilline, S.D; five granddaughters, Heidi, Christy, Julie, Ericka and Airen; and 10 great-grandchildren, Cory, Daisy, Brynn, Ashlei, Brittany, Hannah, Kirstie, Elsa, Sascha and Jesse.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Marks Lutheran Church Endowment Fund, or the Kaiser Permanente Hospice Care Program.

Services with military honors will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2007, in the Willamette National Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. in St. Marks Lutheran Church, 5415 S.E. Powell Blvd., Portland.

She was baptized and confirmed in Skudesness Lutheran Church. Mavis attended eight years of country school and graduated from Pierpont High School in 1935. After working in Minneapolis for several years she was married to Luverne Satter of Elk Point, SD on April 16, 1941.

They farmed in the Elk Point area until moving to Alcester in 1963. Mavis worked at Bethesda Home for the Aged for a few years and later was employed at Otis Radio in Hawarden, Iowa. After working at the same job for 22 years she retired in 1986.

She was a member of Brule Creek Lutheran Church where she worked with the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday School for many years.

Mavis is survived by her two sons, David (Marvey) Satter of Watertown and John Satter of Sioux Falls; daughter, Judith (Greg) Hammerstrom of Watertown; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and three sisters-in-law, Ardis Leyman of Long Beach, CA, Delores Nelson of Bristol, SD and Arlene Satter of Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luverne, in 1977; her parents, two brothers, three sisters and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mavis will be 10AM Friday, June 7, 2019 at Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, SD with burial to follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 6th from 4-8PM at Wass Funeral Home in Beresford with the family present from 5-7PM.

Howard James Bechen was born on May 30, 1927 to Ruben and Elizabeth (Mader) Bechen. He was born in Kadoka, South Dakota and joined the Navy after graduating high school in May of 1945. Howard served in both World War II and the Korean War. After returning from the wars, he met and married Marg Moore. They were married on June 20, 1952.

They were the proud parents of ten children. In January of 1982 the good Lord called Marg home. He then met and married Mary Beaner. They were married on December 23, 1983.

Howard was involved in many things other than ranching and farming. He was a member of the St. Charles Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Artesian Saddle Cub, the Moose Club, the VFW and the Artesian America Legion. He was a 4-H leader and received numerous conservation awards. He enjoyed riding horses to check his cattle as well as camping and boating for relaxing. He taught his family the value of hard work, tough love and devotion to God.

Howard passed away peacefully on Monday, January 20, 2020 surrounded by his loving wife, Mary and many of his children and grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his wife, Mary (Beaner) Bechen; his children and their spouses, Doug (Renee) Bechen of Whitewood, SD , Sandy (Dick) Krantz of Winner, SD, Merl (Diane) Bechen of Mitchell, SD, Larry (Carn) Bechen of Chaska, MN, Joe (Donna) Bechen of Winfred, SD, Brad (Kathleen) Bechen of Huntsville, AL, John (Gayle) Bechen of Letcher, SD, Tom (Marie) Bechen of Mitchell, SD, Barbie (Greg) Becker of Little Elm, TX and Dave (Brenda) Bechen of Mitchell, SD; Howard’s grandchildren and spouses, Travis (Wendy) Bechen, Trevor (Lacy) Bechen, Troy (Amanda) Bechen, Jen (Ryan) Showalter, Scott Krantz, Jessica Krantz, Alyssa (Brandon) McLellan, Angela (Zach) Nolz, Amanda Bechen, Chris (Kindra) Bechen, Cassie (Cole) Kelly, Kelly (Steve) Cox, Carisa (Jeff) Godfrey, Ona (Tony) Lane, Adam (Jill) Bechen, Megan (Johnathon) Noonan, Dominic, KT and Jon Luc Bechen, Daniel, Jarid and Catherine Bechen, Elizabeth Becker, Abigail (Eric) Cooper, Ashley, Aspen, Michelle, MaKayla, Madison, Alexa and Jace Bechen; and 28 great-grandchildren. All who loved him dearly.

Howard is preceded in death by his first wife, Marg (Moore) Bechen; infant grandson, Ian Bechen; parents, Ruben and Elizabeth (Mader) Bechen; brothers, Russell, Donald and Edward Bechen; In-laws, Loraine, Carol, and Joyce Bechen, Melvin, Earl, and Bonnie Moore, and Joe and Bill Beaner; and one niece, Dixie Zoelle.
