He became a Government Land Surveyorin Cape Colony, South Africa. He and his wife lived at Briedbach, on theYellowwoods River outside King Williamstown, and later in East London.He died April 9, 1909, and he and his wife are both buried at East London. Additional information was received about the family completed by MaudeMoorshead in 1975. She showed that Ann Christina Pears married Alfred Everitt Murray, a Land Surveyor. They had 10 children, the youngest ofwhom, Jessie Ashcraft Murray, was the mother of Maude Moorshead. In themiddle 1870's Ann and Alfred Murray settled in East London, South Africa.

He became a farmer in theGraaff Reinet district in the Karoo, and was an authority on, and breederof, Angora Goats. A later newspaper clipping described him as 'a mightybig game hunter.' He moved about a lot, farming in various districts,and was appointed Field Cornet, Rheunosterberg, Hopetown in 1869. Thelast farm he and his wife Jenny occupied was at Perrieshoogte, from whichthey moved to Graaff Reinet in 1898. He died August 5, 1901; and both heand his wife are buried at Graaff Reinet.

  • Walter Everitt Murray According to information received in 1997 from Peter Murray, Walter, theyoungest son of Alfred and Mary (Everitt) Murray, was born December 10,1837, at Salem in the Alburney district, Cape Province, South Africa, andwas the first baby baptised in St. John's Church, Bathurst. At age 18 hebegan farming in the Graaff Reinet district, Cape Colony,and after manymoves acquired the farms Hoeksfontein in 1865 and Roode Bloem in 1873,settling on the latter farm in 1875. He raised sheep and also pioneeredthe introduction of irrigation techniques and ostrich farming in theGraaff Reinet district. He raised and commanded a mounted volunteercorps, the Voor Sneeuberg Rangers, in the Gaika Galeka War in 1878. Hetook an active interest in the elimination of scab (a disease of sheep)and obtained an appointment as scab inspector for the government. Heinvented and promoted the circular dip tank still in use today fortreatment of scab and became an agent for Cooper's Dip. He was also veryactive in the Zwart Ruggens Farmers Association. Known as Oupa to hislarge family, he died May 9, 1924, aged 86 having been an invalid for thelast 10 years. He married on August 1, 1859, Anna Elizabeth Southey (born December 20,1836, died October 15, 1914), eldest child of George and Eleanor(Rubidge) Southey of Bloemhof farm, Graaff Reinet district. Walter and Anna Murray had 11 children, and the family they founded werewell known in the Cape Colony as the Roode Bloem Murrays to distinguishthem from the unrelated but equally numerous family of the Rev'd AndrewMurray in Graaff Reinet.

She married for the first time in theDutch Reformed Church at Aberdeen, Cape Province, in 1887, RudolphLeopold von Moltke, who died in 1890 (or 1895?). She married for thesecond time on December 9, 1897, her first cousin Herbert Howard Murray,(born May 22, 1871, and died May 14, 1953), A.M.I. who was a consultingmechanical engineer in East London. Herbert was the youngest son ofAlfred and Ann (Pears) Murray. Rudolph and Ada (Murray) von Moltke had one child, and Herbert and Ada(Murray) Murray had three children. Ada and Herbert collected theinformation and compiled the enormous Thurtell and Everitt Pedigreeswhich sparked the interest of later members of the family in the familyhistory. As a gardener, Ada was author of a well known book, 'CarnationGrowing in South Africa.'

He obtained hismedical training with distinction at St. Bartholomew's Hospital inLondon, and returned to South Africa to become a surgeon in Johannesburg,the first doctor in that pioneer town. He was a founder of JohannesburgGeneral Hospital and Chief of Surgery there. During the Boer War he andhis wife Kathleen went to England on the hospital ship 'Norman' in 1900and were both invested by Queen Victoria with the Order of St. John ofJerusalem in recognition of their organization of hospital servicesduring a critical period of the conflict. Later he became the firstpresident of the South African Medical Association. He was married inGraaff Reinet, South Africa, October 8, 1889, to Kathleen Elizabeth MaryDunne, 'Kit.' George and Kathleen (Dunne) Murray had 4 children, allsons.
