Mrs. Schaffner was found dead by members of the family. She was aged 51 years and had been in ill health several months, suffering violent attacks of headache. Mrs. Schaffner was born in Cincinnati and resided in Van Wert several years before removing to Harrison township. Dr. E. H. Alspaugh, of Willshire, county coroner, conducted an inquest, and found death due to strychnine poisoning. Among her direct survivors are her husband, four sons, A. H. Nickey, of South Shannon street, Lawrence and Edward Nickey, of Toledo, and George Nickey, of South Dakota, two daughters, Mrs. Ella Clear and Mrs. Mary Wood, of Toledo, one sister, Mrs. Robert Winings, of Cincinnati, and five brothers, Carl Hays, of Hamilton, Perry Hays, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Harry Hays, of New Lebannon, Indiana, Seeley Hays, of Newcastle, Indiana, and Louis Hays, of Cambridge City, Indiana. The funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, in Harrison township. Interment will be made at Woodland Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Debbie Lange O’Connell. Bill graduated from high school and attended college in Chicago. He began working in the Tool & Die industry at the age of 15 and continued throughout his life. He served his apprenticeship, becoming a Journeyman, and joined his parents’ business in the 1960's. He was an entrepreneur, finding work wherever he lived, and owned and operated two restaurants, an International House of Pancakes and Copper Penny, both in northern Chicago. Bill and his family moved to Hamilton in 1977 and Sutter in 1985. He worked as a Foreman at Decker Manufacturing for several years. He was also self-employed as a private contractor, working for many businesses and homes throughout the area. In his early years, Bill raced Top Fuel Funny Cars in the Chicago area. He enjoyed attending car shows and liked showing his 1967 Pontiac Ventura. He was a member of Tri-State Lugnuts Car Club in Quincy and Rat Pack Car Club in Hamilton / Keokuk. He was also a member of Duck’s Unlimited. Bill was a skilled woodworker, crafting shelves, sconces, quilt racks, trunks and other household items. Bill enjoyed listening to Big Band and Polka music.

    Services will be held on Friday, May 4, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at Mendon City Cemetery in Mendon, IL with Bob Wagner officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012 after 2:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends between 5:00 and 7:00 at Lamporte - St. Clair Funeral Home of Hamilton.
