The LDS Vital Records Index CD for North America shows that Walter Smith and Mary E. Thurtell were married December 28, 1899, and that the marriage was recorded in Plymouth, Iowa. The source is FHL Number1404988. Mary was not living with her parents, Frank and Eva S. Thurtell, at the time of the 1900 U.S. Census. She and her husband are shown as the next family on the same page of the 1900 U.S. Census for Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, Iowa (SD 11, ED 102, Sheet 5). Her husband, Walter Smith, is shown as age 31, born in England in March 1869, and head of the household. He is a farmer who owns his farm but has a mortgage. The census shows that he had immigrated to the United States in 1874 and had lived in the country for 26 years but does not show that he had become a naturalized citizen. His wife is shown as Mary E. Smith, age 23 and born in December 1876 in Wisconsin, with both of her parents born in Wisconsin. The census shows that Walter and Mary Smith had been married 0 years and that she was the mother of 0 children. Living with them are Walter Smith's parents and sister. His father is James Smith, a farmer born in June 1835 in England and age 64 years old, and his mother is Lucy Smith, born in April 1839 in England and age 61. Both of them had immigrated to the United States in 1874 and had lived in the country 26 years. Only James Smith is shown as a naturalized U.S. citizen. They had been married 44 years, and both parents of both of them were also born in England. Walter Smith's sister is Lucy Smith, who is shown as single, age 21, born in New York in April 1874, and whose occupation is shown as at home. Mary and Walter Smith are listed in the 1920 U.S. Census for Plymouth County, Iowa (SD11, ED 127, Page 4B, Line 67) which shows them living on Dover Street, Kinglsey Town, Garfield Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. Walter Smith is shown as age 50, born in England as were both his parents, immigrating to the United States in 1900 and becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1907. MarySmith, his wife, is shown as age 43, with her place of birth and that ofher parents shown as unknown. All six of their children are shown as born in Iowa. Their daughter Margaret, age 18 or 19, is shown as single and a clerk in a Soft Drink (P???). The soundex shows her age as 18, andthe census could be either 18 or 19. The last word of the industry in which she works is very hard to read. Their daughter Florence Smith is shown as age 17. Both Margaret and Florence are shown as not having attended school since September 1, 1919. Gilbert, age 15, Edward, age13, and Mary E., age 6, are all shown as in school. Their youngest daughter, Dorothy, age 4, is not yet in school. Walter Smith's mother, Lucy Smith, is a widow, aged 82 and born in England as were both herparents. The 1920 census shows she immigrated to the United States in 1940, probably meaning 1900 which was also inaccurate, and that she was not a United States citizen.

  • Olive E. Thurtell Olive Thurtell is shown as age 2 and born in Wisconsin in the U.S. CensusSoundex for 1880 for Webster County, Elkhorn Township, Iowa (Vol. 32,E.D. 220, Sheet 23, Line 25). She is shown as living with her parents,Frank and Eva Thurtell, her sister Mary age 4, and her brother Frank age1. This record showed both parents and both of her siblings were alsoborn in Wisconsin. In the U.S. Census for 1900 for Iowa (Volume 60, ED 102, SD 11, Sheet 5,Line 71) Olive E. Thurtell is shown as age 22, born in Wisconsin inOctober 1877, living in Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, with herparents, Frank and Eva S. Thurtell, and seven of her younger brothers andsisters on her father's farm. Her occupation is shown as at home. Family information showed she was born in Webster County, Iowa, and thather nickname was Ollie. A database of Bureau of Land Management Records for Meade County, SouthDakota, was found on the internet in July 1999 atftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/meade/land/mead-t.txt. Thisdatabase lists a Belle Travis obtaining land May 8, 1901, in Meridian 7,Township 006N, Range 009E, Section 31, of 160 acres, type 251101(Homestead), Case Type patent, document identification number 2390.There is another listing in this database for Amy Belle Travis obtainingland May 29, 1913, in Meridian 7, Township 007N, Range 006E, Section 20,of 160 acres, type 251101 (Homestead), Case Type patent, documentidentification number 337982. These two listings pertain to BelleThurtell Travis, who was widowed prior to 1901. This same database has alisting for Heirs of Olive E. Thurtell obtaining land June 11, 1912, inMeridian 7, Township 007N, Range 006E, Section 20, of 160 acres, type251101 (Homestead), Case Type patent, document identification number273698. This listing pertains to this Olive E. Thurtell. The file from the above homestead record shows that Olive E. Thurtell wassingle at the time she originally made her homestead application. Shehad originally been approved for a homestead for the North East Quarterof Section Fifteen, Township Five North, of Range 6 East, Black HillsMeridian, having filed for this homestead on September 7, 1904, H. E.Number 8705. She made her settlement on this land and erected a houseand then learned that the exact same property had been granted as ahomestead on August 22, 1904, H. E. Number 8661, to a Martha Berkvam.Olive Thurtell was then approved after delays lasting several months fora second homestead since she had had to relinquish the first one. Thesecond homestead was for 160 acres in the Northwest Quarter of Section 20in Township 7 North of Range 6 East, Black Hills Meridian, HomesteadEntry Number 0391. Her homestead affidavit signed October 30, 1905,showed she was Olive E. Thurtell of Sturgis, So. Dak., over 21 years ofage and a single woman. She signed the registry return receipt fordelivery of paperwork on March 15, 1906, as Olive E. Thurtell, and beganliving on her homestead in March 1906, with a home built on the land atthat time. She apparently married Charles E. Thomas shortly afterwards, and he moved to her homestead, giving up the homestead claim he hadpreviously filed himself. Olive Thurtell Thomas died in 1906 per familyrecords. The paperwork completed in 1911 by Charles E. Thomas as theheir of Olive E. Thurtell showed that he had continued living at thehomestead after the death of his wife, Olive, and that as of November 15,1911, he was married with three children. The same affidavit showed thathe was age 36, with a post office address of Vale, South Dakota, and thathe was born in Maine. By 1911 he had about 110 acres of the land untercultivation and improvements valued at $1500. The land patent number273698 was finally approved June 11, 1912. The afffidavits to supportCharles Thomas' claim were all completed on November 15, 1911, in Newell,Butte County, South Dakota, within the Belle fourche land district, thenearest and most accessible qualified officer in the district in whichthe land is located. The file also contains the affidavit of PeterFelion, age 57, of Vale, South Dakota, who lived on the adjoining landand confirmed that he had known Charles Thomas for about 5 1/2 years andthe land for 25 years and confirmed that the original entrywoman was deadand that her husband, Charles Thomas, had not been absent from thehomestead and had over 100 acres under cultivation, and that he was notrelated to the claimant. An affidavit from John S. McGill, age 55 years,of Vale, South Dakota, confirmed he lived on the land just across theroad and that he had known the claimant and the land about six years andthat Charles Thomas had about 100 acres under cultivation and that he wasnot related to the claimant. Jane Ward advised in January 2000 that her records showed that OliveThurtell was born October 6, 1879, in Lewisburg, Meade County, Wisconsin, and died October 9, 1906. This record of hers listed no sources.Lewisburg, Wisconsin, is in Grant County, Wisconsin, and is probablywhere she was born. Meade County, South Dakota, is where she died. Shealso advised that she showed that Olive's grandson was the personal pilotto the governor of South Dakota. Their Meade County, South Dakota, marriage certificate shows Olive E.Thurtell (shown also as Olive B Thurtell in the same document), age 28,and Charles E. Thomas, age 30, both of Sturgis, Meade County, SouthDakota, were married December 28, 1905, in Sturgis by a minister, J. S.Dimwitt (that's what the last name looks like, but it could be Dimmitt orsomething similar). Witnesses were Mary M. Newell and D. J. Newell. They got their license December 27, 1905, and the record was filedJanuary 6, 1906. Her death certificate confirms Olive E. Thomas, a married white femaleage 28, died October, 9, 1906, in Sturgis, Meade County, South Dakota. The cause of death was Puerperal Eclampia. The medical certifier was J.H. Naftzger, MD, and the death certificate was filed November 1, 1906, onPage 1, Book A, in Meade County, South Dakota. There is no record of a baby born to Olive and Charles Thomas on file ineither Meade County or at the state office based on a search done inJanuary and February 2000. However, the cause of death almost certainlymeans Olive had a baby. Information that had been received from RobertJohnson as part of a family record showed Olive Thurtell was stillborn. It seems quite likely that it was her baby that was stillborn, since theonly child living with Charles E. Thomas and his second wife by the 1910census was born after Olive Thurtell Thomas died.

His wife is shown on the soundex as Rouse W. Thertell, age 24, born in Iowa. Their daughter, Thelma D. Thertell, is shown as age 6, born in Iowa. The census record shows Tony Thertell as a married white male age 37 who owns his own home but has a mortgage. It shows he was born in Iowa but that his parents were both born in Russia with a mother tongue of Hebrew, like the parents of his neighbors (obviously an error). It shows his occupation as a laborer with the city. His wife's name looks like Rouse W. Thertell in the census, which shows her as a married white female born in Iowa whose mother was born in Iowa and father was born in Indiana. The census record shows they could both read, write, and speak English. Their daughter, Thelma Thertell, is shown as a single white female age 6 who is in school and who was born in Iowa, as were both her parents.

  • Frank Thurtell Frank Thurtell and his family are listed in the U.S. Census soundex for 1880 for Iowa (Vol. 32, E.D. 220, Sheet 23, Line 25) as living in Webster County, Elkhorn Township. This index shows Frank Thurtell as a white male, age 28, born in Wisconsin. It shows his wife, Eva Thurtell, as age 25, born in Wisconsin. His daughter, Mary, is 4 and born in Wisconsin. His daughter, Olive, is 2 and born in Wisconsin. His son, Frank, is 1and born in Wisconsin. The census record itself shows that Frank Thurtell is a farmer, with his father born in England and his mother in Canada. Eva's occupation in the census is shown as keeping house, and her father is shown as born in Pennsylvania and her mother in England. Mary, Olive, and Frank are not yet in school in the census record. Frank Thurtell and his family are listed in the U.S. Census for 1900 for Iowa (Volume 60, ED 102, SD 11, Sheet 5, Line 69) as living in Elkhorn Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. It shows Frank Thurtell as age 48, born in Wisconsin in December 1852, with his father born in England and his mother in Indiana. He owns his farm but has a mortgage. His wife, Eva S. Thurtell, age 44, was born in Wisconsin in November 1855, and the census shows her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in England. The census shows they have been married 25 years and that she is the mother of 12 children, of whom 10 are living. His daughter, Olive E. Thurtell, age 22, was born in Wisconsin in October 1877, and her occupation is shown as at home. Their seven younger children were all born in Iowa. Edward B. Thurtell, age 19, was born in March 1889 according to the census soundex, but the last digit of the year is hard to read in the census itself and probably should be 1881. He is shown as a farm laborer. Anthony, age 16, was born in March 1884. Robert L., age14, was born in January 1886. Carson, age 10, was born in July 1889. Blanche L., age 8, was born in February 1892. Eva M., age 6, was born in January 1894. Grace L., age 3, was born in February 1897. The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin, biographical record shows his wife's brother, Frank Thurtell, was a farmer in Iowa. The marriage certificate for Frank Thurtell and Mary Smith shows they were married in Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa, on June 4, 1920, and the record was filed July 12, 1920. The groom is shown as age 69 and born in Wisconsin, and the bride is shown as age 31 and born in Mapleton, Iowa. During the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion Frank Thurtell's daughters, Dorothy Thurtell Richardson, and May Thurtell Thomas, advised that Frank and his second wife, Mary May Thurtell, separated about 1927 or 1928 in Jefferson, South Dakota. She had told her daughters that they were divorced, but neither of them had ever seen divorce papers nor were they sure at all that there was any divorce. Dorothy Richardson recalled that Frank Thurtell was hospitalized for quite a while, probably about six months, at St. Joseph Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, before his death, and that she had visited him there. Another family source had shown that he died in St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa. The death certificate for Frank Thurtell shows a state registration number of 097-6962. It confirms that he died at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sioux City, Sioux City Township, Woodbury County, Iowa, on March 22,1929. His residence is shown as the Ego Hotel, and the death certificate shows he had resided in the city for 50 years. It shows he was a divorced white male with no spouse's name shown and that he was born December 16, 1852, in Wisconsin and was age 76 years, 3 months, 16 days. His occupation is shown as retired. His parents are listed as Edward Thurtell, born in England, and Amy Burns, born in Indiana. The informant was Mrs. Eva Faul (although her signed surname looks more like Fall) of Des Moines. The doctor, Ja. Thomson, M. D., of Sioux City, Iowa, showed he attended the deceased from April 10, 1928, to March 22, 1929, and that the cause of death was Cerebral Hemorrhage with a secondary problem of Paresia. The date of burial is shown as March 25, 1929, in Kingsley, with the undertaker's signature looking like E. H. Derby of Kingsley.

  • May Annabelle Thurtell May Thurtell Thomas provided information about herself and her descendants, her brother, and her parents at the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion in Cleveland, New York. Her sister, Dorothy Richardson, and daughter, Roberta Thomas Knapp, also attended, along with several of Dorothy Richardson's descendants. May recalled that her parents had separated when she was only about two years old. She had moved with her mother and siblings to Nebraska on March 19, 1930, the birthday of her brother, George Thurtell. She had helped on the farm her mother rented and operated in Nebraska. In a December 1999 letter May Thomas recalled that she was not sure where her parents met. Her older siblings Dorothy and George were both born in Missouri where their parents had a farm. She was born in Jefferson, South Dakota, and was pretty sure that was where her parents went when they left Missouri. She advised that she and her husband, Virgil Thomas, lived on a farm, which was owned by the man for whom her husband worked. After her husband's death, May and her children moved back with her mother and brother until her son, Virgil, was about six months old. She then moved back to Lebanon, Nebraska, and did housework for the family for whom her husband had worked until her son Virgil was about 1 1/2. At that time her half brother's wife died leaving him with four small children. She then shared a home with her half brother, who worked in a hay mill and provided the food while she kept house and took care of the six children. They all moved to California in 1956, but her half brother did not like it there and moved back to Nebraska. May had a job at a precision drill factory, where she stayed for 12 1/2 years, and then got a job at Centinela Hospital in 1969. She worked there until her retirement in 1990. After two years of retirement she decided she was too 'healthy to just sit around so asked them for part time work and they said sure. It's almost full time now but hopefully they will get more hired so I can work a little less.'

  • Walter Thurtell The 1850 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, page 136,ennumerated September 19, 1850, shows Walter Thurtle, age 4, born in Wisconsin, living with his parents, Edward B. Thurtle and Anna Thurtle. The 1860 U.S. Census for Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, enumerated July 14, 1860, on page 95 lists Edward B. Thurtle and his family. It shows the Post Office was Fair Play, Wisconsin. Edward B. Thurtle is shown as age 44, a farmer born in England whose real estate is valued at $3500 and personal property is valued at $900. Living with him is Amy Thurtle, age 39, born in Indiana, and eight children, all of whom were born in Wisconsin. Edward is 17 and a farmer. Ann, age 15, Walter, age13, Mary, age 11, Frank, age 9, and Frederick, age 6, are all shown as in school. The two youngest children are Harriet, age 3, and a not named daughter, age 1. The 1870 U.S. Census for the Town of Jamestown, Grant County, Wisconsin, enumerated August 6, 1870, showing the Post Office as Platteville, Grant County, Wisconsin, lists Edward Thurtle and his family on page 15, lines9-15. He is shown as Edward Thurtle, age 54, a farmer whose real estateis worth $7000 and personal property is worth $1200. He is shown as bornin England, with both parents of foreign birth. His wife is shown as Anna Thurtle, age 49, born in Indiana, whose occupation is keeping house. All five of the children listed show they were born in Wisconsin. Frank, 18, works on the farm. Fred, whose age is shown as 13, also works on the farm and attended school in the past year. Harriet E. Thurtle, age 13, and Grace Thurtle, age 11, are shown as at home and attending school in the past year. Anna B. Thurtle, age 9, is also shown as attending school. On the same page of the 1870 census on line 16 is Walter Thurtle, age 25, born in Wisconsin, who works on the farm. Also on the same page on lines17-18 are Ann Folts, age 56, born in Wisconsin, whose occupation is keeping house, and Edward R. Folts, age 1, born in Wisconsin. On lines19-21 are Ransom Folts, age 27, born in New York, who works on a farm; Ann Folts, age 25, born in Wisconsin, whose occupation is keeping house; and Ransom Foltz, age 2/12, who was born in March 1870 in Wisconsin. He is undoubtedly the 'Watt Thurtell' in the 1880 U.S. Census National Index living in the 4th Ward, Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa, page 204C.This shows him as a white male age 35 born in New York whose occupation is shown as collector. The census record itself is found on Page 11, SD2, ED 175, which is available in image form online in the Ancestry.com library as of June 2001. This shows Walt Thurtell was living in the 4thWard in the city of Dubuque on 5th Street as a boarder in the boardinghouse of William and Josee Kimes. Also living there was Milton Speer, another boarder, whose occupation is shown as an editor. The marital status column for both of them was left blank, as were the columns for the places of birth of their parents, along with those of most of the other boarders. The additional fact that the place of birth for Walt Thurtell is shown as New York is a strong indication that the information was provided by the Kimes family for all the boarders. Emma Bechtel is found in Dubuque living with her parents and siblings in the 1880 U.S.Census (Page 185A, or Page 33, SD 2, ED 174) on Washington Street. The marriage of Walter Thurtell and Emma Bechtel is recorded in Book 4, Page 414, Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. It shows that 'On application of said Thurtell and satisfactory proof license issued this 22nd day ofJuly A.D. 1880' for Walter Thurtell - 29, and Emma Bechtel - 20. 'The marriage of the above named parties was duly solemnized by the Rev. Wm.S. Balch at Dubuque, Iowa,' July 22, 1880. No records were kept in Dubuque, Iowa, if either member of a couple being married had been married before. Divorce records for 1880 and earlier exist in both Dubuque County, Iowa, and in Pulaski County, Illinois, but are in such poor order that a researcher would need to go to each county to physically search for such records, according to information received from each of these counties in November 1999. The entry about Ransom B. Folts in a 1901 Grant County, Wisconsin, biographical record shows his wife's brother, Walter Thurtell, was a resident of Honolulu. Information received from Charlotte Mackie in 1998, mostly from Cynthia Kerman, shows Walter Thurtell was born March 31, 1847, in Wisconsin, and that he married Emma Bechtel on July 22, 1880. He was a school teacher and later the editor of the Dubuque, Iowa, newspaper. He and his wife apparently separated some time prior to 1900, since she is listed as the head of the household in the 1900 census. He is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census for Hawaii twice. One listing shows him as Walter Thurtell in Honolulu District, Island of Oahu on MillerStreet (Volume 10, ED 10, Sheet 6, Line 10), enumerated June 4, 1900.This listing shows him as Caucasian, born in March 1847 in Wisconsin and age 53. He is listed with five lodgers, and the field of the census showing whether he owned or rented his home was left blank. This listing shows he has been married 20 years and that his father was born in England and his mother in North Carolina. It shows he immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands in 1899 and has been living in the Hawaiian Islands for 1 1/3 years. His occupation is shown as a journalist, and the census shows there were 0 months in the prior year that he was not employed. He is able to read, write, and speak English but cannot speak Hawaiian. There is another listing in Honolulu District, Island of Oahu, enumerated on June 6, 1900 (Volume 9, ED 6, Sheet 15, Line 49) showing him as Walter Thurtell, age 53 and born in March 1837 in Wisconsin, a Caucasian living alone in a home he owned mortgage free on Beach Road in Honolulu District, Island of Oahu, Hawaii. In this listing he is shown as a widower who immigrated to the Hawaiian Islands in 1898, 1 1/2 years earlier, and his father is shown as born in England and his mother in North Carolina. He is shown as a journalist who had two months when he was not employed, and he can speak, read, and write English but not Hawaiian. These two listings undoubtedly refer to the same person, since Walter Thurtell was 53 in June 1900, and therefore the correct date of birth should be March 1847. Walter Thurtell is listed in the index for the 1910 U.S. Census as living in Honolulu County, Hawaii, on Page 112, Honolulu Volume 10, ID number H150. He is shown as single, age 63, living in Honolulu and owning his home mortgage free in the 1910 Hawaii census (Honolulu County, Island Oahu, District Honolulu, Sheet 14B, ED 39, page 112). His father is shown as born in England and his mother in North Carolina. Living with him is a boarder, James W. White, a male who could be 17, 27, or 47, and was born in Hawaii and whose mother was born in California and father inthe United States. In the 1920 U.S. Census Walter Thurtell is living in his home which he owns mortgage free at 80 Laimi Road, Honolulu, and shown as age 72, born in Wisconsin, with his father born in England andhis mother in North Carolina. His occupation is shown as editor, and he is shown as a widower living alone (Honolulu County, Island Oahu, City of Honolulu, Sheet 24, Line 21, Volume 12, ED 43). Walter Thurtell is listed in the Hawaii directories for 1916 - 1919. The 1916 Directory shows 'Thurtell Walter, journalist, r Dow, Nuuanu valley.' No other Thurtell is listed in the 1916 Directory for Hawaii. The 1917 Directory shows 'Thrutell Walter, journalist, rr 2766 Dow nr Laimi rd,Oahu. Thrutell Edward O, electr L P Co, Lihue, Kauai.' The 1918 Directory shows 'Thurtell Walter, journalist, r 80 Laimi rd, Oahu.Thurtell, Edward O, electr L P Co, Lihue, Kauai.' The listing in the1919 Directory reads 'Thurtell Walter, proofreader, Star Bulletin, r 80 Laimi rd, Oahu. Thurtell, Edward O, electr L P Co, Lihue, Kauai.' The death certificate for Walter Thurtell shows he died at his home at 80 Laimi Road, Honolulu, Hawaii, on December 17, 1921, at age 74 years, 8 months, 16 days, and that he was born in 1847, the son of Edward B.Thurtell. His father's place of birth is shown as Germany, and his mother's name and birth place are shown as unknown. It shows he had lived in Honolulu for 25 years and that he was a widower. The cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage, and he was cremated in Oahu. The informant was Joseph Joaquin, relationship not shown and address illegible. His wife's name is also shown as unknown.

  • Dorothy Thurtell The delayed birth certificate for Dorothy Thurtell, Certificate Number 261419-l was filed in the Division of Health, Jefferson City, Missouri, on February 23, 1984. It shows her name as Dorothy Thurtell and that she was born August 1, 1921, in Mt. View, Howell County, Missouri, and was a white female. Her parents are shown as Frank Thurtell, born in Wisconsin, and Mary May Jensen, born in Iowa. Dorothy Richardson signed her birth affidavit for this document on November 16, 1983, showing her address as 423 Stageline Road, Oroville, California 95965. Supporting evidence for the birth certificate is listed as her Certificate of Marriage Record, Record 16, Page 367, Lincoln County, Nebraska, filed September 11, 1936, showing she was 16 years old and born in Mt. View, Missouri; a photocopy of a family Bible record made between June 17,1909, and December 6, 1925, showing she was born August 1, 1921; and an affidavit of an older brother, Elmer Smith, North Platte, Nebraska, made January 23, 1984, showing she was born August 1, 1921, in Mt. View, Missouri. Dorothy Thurtell and Carl Henry Richardson were married by Judge Sandallat the Court House in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska on September 11, 1937, according to information received from Jane Ward in 1997. She and her husband lived at 423 Stageline Road, Oroville, California, from about 1976 until 1996. Dorothy Richardson attended the 1999 Thurtell Family Reunion in Cleveland, New York, and provided a great deal of information about her descendants. She stated she had eight children, 29 grandchildren, 64great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren as of August 1999. She keeps birthday and anniversary lists and a book on all her family members and can remember where virtually all of them were born and married. Grandchildren and great grandchildren become part of her extended family immediately, regardless of whether their relationship to her is based on their birth or the marriage of their parent to one of her descendants. She sometimes uses a cane and is bothered by arthritis, but her memory as of August 1999 is outstanding. In a March 2000 e-mail her daughter, Jane Ward, recalled that Dorothy and Carl Richardson enjoyed square dancing and round dancing and belonged to several clubs, dancing sometimes as often as three times a week. An e-mail from Jane Ward on July 24, 2000, advised that Dorothy Richardson had suffered a heart attack but had been released from the hospital and was back living with her sister, May Thurtell Thomas. She advised that Dorothy had suffered congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, and heart muscle damage complicated by renal degradation.

  • Captain John Brookes Thurtell The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900, the 1963 Thurtell family history, and the History of the Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, all in possession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show John Thurtell married Ellen and that he died February 15,1879, at 67. According to information from the Norwich Public Libraries a John BrooksThurtell was living at South Quay, Yarmouth, in 1852. This is probably the same person. Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that John BrooksThurtell was a Navy Captain and that a photo of him is in the possessionof Charlotte Mackie, Guelph, Canada. It shows that Captain John Brooks Thurtell, born1812, died February 15,1879, aged 67, is buried in Thirkley (?Kirkley) churchyard in Lowestoft. He married Ellen Aldred (N.B. there was a prominent Lowestoft family of that name, including Obed Aldred, a founding partner of the Lowestoft China Works in 1758). They must have been living in Yarmouth in 1845 since a son was born there. It is possible that he might be the captain referred to in the notice in the 'Sydney Morning Herald,' Sydney, Australia, of October 15, 1838, showing that the 'Arachne was a ship commanded by Captain Thurtell which sailed from Sydney on the 12th October 1838 carrying sundry items and wasdestined for Mauritius, via Newcastle.' This notice was found indexed onthe internet in March 2001 athttp://www.blaxland.com/ozships/passengr/sa/a01.htm. It is highly probable that he is the Capt. J. B. Thurtell shown on aninternet listing of 'Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists' to Victoria, Australia, shown as reaching Victoria in February 1854 on theship the Wigram, which departed from a British port and is on fiche 063,page 001, at the Public Record Office in Victoria, Australia. The website for this index as of October 1999 washttp://www.cohsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/db/ship2.pl. Another web site found atthe same time at http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/manet/132/caplis3x.htm showed J. B.Thurtell was Captain of the Wigram arriving from a British port inFebruary 1854 on fiche 63, page 1. A lookup request provided in October1999 by Macbeth Genealogical Serices confirmed that the fiche showed that J. B. Thurtell was the captain of the Wigram on this voyage.

  • She The family tree done by Harriet Thurtell about 1900 and the History ofthe Thurtell Family done by Susan Persia Thurtell about 1968, both in thepossession of Susan Persia Thurtell Miller, show that Charlotte Thurtell died unmarried. Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that, although the'Thurtell Pedigree' showed that Charlotte Thurtell died young, this was obviously incorrect. Charlotte Thurtell (Murray) was born August 15,1801, and was baptised September 6, 1801, at Hopton, Suffolk, England. Aphotograph in the possession of Professor George Thurtell of Guelph,Ontario, Canada, a descendant of her brother, Benjamin Thurtell, showsher as Charlotte Murray, who was born August 15, 1801, and died inLiverpool June 13, 1861. It therefore appears that she was yet anothermember of the family to change her name to Murray (unless she marriedafter all and it was a married name). She is stated to have diedunmarried and been quite a noted woman who held finishing classes forgirls. Her brothers, Alfred and Walter, also changed their last name to Murrayfollowing the scandal relating to their cousin, John Thurtell.

John Thurtell

Father*John Thurtell b. b 1680, d. 1729

Life EventDateDescription
Birthcirca 1705John Thurtell was born circa 1705.1
He was the son of John Thurtell and Alice Balls.
Marriagecirca 1730John Thurtell married Elisabeth (?) circa 1730.
Death1769John Thurtell died in 1769 at Norfolk, England.
  • John Thurtell Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that John Thurtell, the father of the James Thurtell who married Winifred Nunn, was a barber in Trowse, Norfolk, England in the time before barbers and surgeons split into separate guilds in 1745. Afterwards he was a prosperous periwig maker in Norwich and Trowse Newton, Norfolk, England. His properties in Norwich passed to the use of his widow and afterwards jointly to his children, while those in Trowse Newton, where he lived, passed to his eldest son John. He also held a part freehold and partcopy hold property in Hempnall, Norfolk, which passed to his second son James. John and Elizabeth Thurtell had at least four children. The IGI shows a John Thurtle christened February 20, 1705, the son ofJohn Thurtle and Jane. It is possible that 'Jane' is an error for'Alice,' and this entry refers to this John Thurtell. The parish record itself has not yet been checked. John Thurtell, son of John Thurtell the blacksmith, was mentioned in hisfather's will in 1729. He is also mentioned in the will of his motherAlice, in 1735, which clearly states he was her son. He figures also inthe Admon of his brother Henry, in 1741, as John Thurtill of Trowse, abarber, although their relationship is not actually stated. There seems little doubt that this is the same man as the John Thurtell, wig maker of Norwich and Trowse Newton, who made his will in 1767 proved in 1769 or1770, and had children by his wife Elizabeth. In 1729 he was bequeathed by his father's will a blue cloth wrapping coat, and in 1735 by his mother's will (Alice) the sum of one shilling. The will of John Thurtell, of Trowse Newton, Norfolk, periwigmaker (i.e.,wig maker), in the Norfolk Record Office, is dated September 7, 1767.The executors appointed in the will were sworn March 20, 1769, and so thetestator had by then probably died. For some reason the will was examined again on September 4, 1784. This John Thurtell may also have made an earlier will, later revoked, since the entry in the index ofwills gives the dates 1754-1770. In his will of 1767, bearing his ownsignature, John Thurtell disposed of property in Trowse Newton, Hempnallin Norfolk, and on Boarstreet in the city of Norwich. His wife Elizabeth, who he apparently married prior to 1731, was designated executrix by her husband in 1767 and 1769. Her husband bequeathed the Boarstreet property in Norwich for her use in her lifetime (the provision being that it would on her death pass in equal shares to their three children). She was also to receive the residue of his estate afterbequests, as well as interest from the sum of fifty pounds as livingexpenses. Considering these provisions, we might guess that the furtherexamination of her husband's will in 1784 could have occurred when shewas dying, since she seems to have died soon afterwards. Elizabeth Thurtele was buried 18 Feb 1785 in Trowse Newton (archdeacon's transcript, which however does not give marital status or age which wouldconfirm this is her). The Court Roll of the Manor of Trowse Newton shows that at the Court ofNovember 10, 1755, John Thurtell 'the elder' (address not given) appearedas an executor of Alice Dobson to quitclaim any right he may have to herestate. He is not mentioned in the Court Roll of the Manor of Hempnallwith the Members although there are mentions of a Thirkettle family thatwould appear not to be closely related. The will of Alice Dobson would be of interest if it can be found. It is clear that this John Thurtell is the same person as the John Thurtle (signed John Thurtill) of Trowse in Norfolk County, barber, whoappears with Ann Thurtle (signed Ann Thirtill), widow, in the administration bond dated October 8, 1741, following the death of herhusband Henry Thurtle of Norwich St. Julian, blacksmith. John Thurtellof Trowse was almost certainly the brother of this Henry, and thereforelike him a son of John Thurtell the blacksmith of Norwich St. Julian. Apuzzling baptism is recorded, February 20, 1705, at Norwich St. Julian, for a John Thurtle son of John Thurtle and Jane (IGI entry). If it isthe same John, then the mother's name in this entry must be an error, because John Thurtell, son of blacksmith John Thurtell of Norwich St.Julian and wife Alice (nee Balls), is specifically mentioned as their son in both their wills, 1729 and 1734 respectively, and from the sequence ofchildren he would appear to have been born around 1705 or at most a yearor two later. --------- The WILL OF JOHN THURTELL OF TROWSE NEWTON, PERIWIGGMAKER 1754-70 Norwich Consistory Court, Norfolk [Will Register Copy]. His will is dated 1767, and proved? 1769, prior will apparently 1754 since index entry gives dates 1754-1770. He disposed of property in Trowse Newton (co.Norfolk), Hempnall(co.Norfolk), and on Boarstreet in the City of Norwich. Wife: Elizabeth, mentioned 1767, 1769, and designated executrix, was bequeathed the use of the Boarstreet property in Norwich while she lived(after which it would pass in equal shares to his three children), theresidue of the estate after bequests, and interest from the sum of fiftypounds as living expenses. Children (not stated if Elizabeth was their mother): John Thurtell, mentioned 1767, 1769, was left a share of the Norwichproperty (but was perhaps already in possession of the property in TrowseNewton since disposal of it is not stated in the will); he was also toobtain compensation for the property in Hempnall willed to James. James Thurtell, mentioned 1767, 1769, was left a share of theNorwich property, and was left all of the Hempnall property subject tocompensation to brother John). Sarah, mentioned 1767 was left a share of the Norwich property. Grandchildren: John Bayner, was underage in 1767 (and was apparently to be in the care of the grandmother Elizabeth), but it is not stated if he was son of Sarah or some other daughter not named; Provision was made for his upkeepuntil reaching the age of 21 years. Notes: - Trowse Newton is just outside of Norwich to the south, and Hempnallis just a few miles farther south from Norwich. Lakenham, where our ancestors James & Winifred Thurtell farmed under Southwell, landlord, isimmediately adjacent to Trowse Newton. The records of Trowse Newton,Lakenham and Hempnall have not yet been fully searched to prove aconnection between our James Thurtell, cooper & farmer, and John Thurtell(the elder), periwig maker. Nevertheless, the James Thurtell mentioned in the above will can be none other than our ancestor James Thurtell whomarried Winifred Nunn and died in 1801. This is evidenced by the willproved 1801 for James Thurtell showing that he possessed property inHempnall apparently corresponding to that conveyed in the above will ofJohn Thurtell to his brother James. - Hempnall Norfolk, where this John had property, had a Thirkettlefamily that left two wills: Mary Thirkettle (wife of William), will dated 1784. William Thirkettle, will date 1785-9. But neither of these mention a James, and their family and propertyin Hemphall appear to be different from that in the above will. - The connection between the John Thurtell of the above will and ourearliest previously established ancestor James Thurtell, is alsodiscussed in the notes to the will of the younger John Thurtell, peruchmaker, 1772.
