  • Zachariah moved from Montgomery County, Maryland to Newberry, South Carolina in the
    1780's after the Revolutionary War. He settled about three miles south of the
    present day site of the city of Newberry. On December 9, 1803, he bought from
    Marmaduke Mills, 107 acres on the Bush River. He died in 1814 without a will and
    his estate was sold. Among property recorded as sold were books, a loom, bee hives,
    and six negro slaves. By about 1825 Zachariah's widow had passed on and all of his
    children had moved away from Newberry County, except for Nancy who died in Newberry.
    Nancy Prater Sheppard is buried in the Ramage-Sheppard Cemetary near Newberry.
    John A. Prater married Mary Ann Grifith in Edgefield, SC and moved to Upsom
    County, GA. It is believed that William H. Prater also moved to Upsom County.
    Ruth married John Watts and moved to Jones County, Ga. Mary married Christopher
    Whitman and also moved to Georgia. Hezekiah moved to Lexington County, SC near
    Batesburg. The burial site of Zachariah and Ruth remains undiscovered.

  • Hezekiah was born in Montgomery County, Maryland and moved to Newberry, SC with his
    parents in the 1780's. They settled in Newberry about three miles south of the present town. Hezekiah later moved across the Saluda River into Lexington District. There may have been another son born between 1813-1815. If so, it is assumed he died in youth.
    By the 1840's Hezekiah owned 830 acres at the south edge of Batesburg on Dunkin (Duncan) Branch of Chinquepin Creek. He deeded 124 acres each to Milton, Wesley, and Mackey. At his death, the remainder was divided into 3 tracts known as the Homestead Tract (248 acres), Holston Tract (105 acres), and the Lee Tract (110 acres). The Holston
    Tract was sold to Lewis Gunter for $305. The Lee Tract was sold to Lodowick Hartley, nephew of widow Ellen, for $875. Six sons and at least two sons-in-law of Hezekiah Sr. served in the confederate Army. The war devastated the Prater family, as it did much of the South. After the war, Ellen Prater resided with the family of her daughter Elizabeth Jones who owned and operated a hotel in Batesburg.
