She was born on Sept. 16, 1911, in Richland County, the daughter of Hugh and Maggie (Mahoney) Devine. Helen lived her entire life in Richland County, moving into town at age 13 to board and attend Richland Center High School. Upon graduation, she attended Richland County Normal and LaCrosse Teachers College, and then taught in rural Richland County schools for many years. A proud supporter of public education for her family and community, Helen was elected in July 1960 to River Valley School Districts first school board, where she served until her retirement in May 1982. She held the offices of secretary and president of the board during its formative years. Helen married James Martin in 1940 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Richland Center where she was still a member. Together they farmed Martin Farms, established in 1855, in Gotham. She lived on the farm until the last several years and was a member of the Gotham Birthday Club, a leader of the Gotham Go-Getters 4-H Club and a 40-year member of the Holstein Association. In 2002, the Martin Farms co-hosted Wisconsin Farm Progress Days. Helen enjoyed the festivities from the front porch of her home, greeting visitors including the Governor and scores of other friends and family. Survivors include four daughters, Ann (Albert) Greenheck of Lone Rock, Bonnie (James) Bolin of Rockford, Ill., Sally (Umberto) DiFiore of South Pasadena, Calif., and Nancy Chellevold of Summit, N.J; nine grandchildren, Randy and Mark Bolin, Jamie, Greg and Jennifer Greenheck, Courtney (Chellevold) Mellinkoff, Jared Chellevold, Julia (DiFiore) Rue and Adriano DiFiore; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Klinzing of Richland Center; two sisters-in-law, Eva Roberts of Wauwatosa, and Marcella Devine of Richland Center; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Helen was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage and was a loyal Brewers, Badgers and -most of all - Packers fan. Throughout her life, she insisted on keeping track of the Packers and even last week she expressed her desire and confidence that Brett Favre would return to lead the Pack this year. If anything surpassed her love of the Packers, it was her decades-long devotion to the Democratic Party and politics. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2006, at 11:30 a.m. at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Richland Center. Fr. Emmanuel Famiyeh will officiate with burial in the Button Cemetery.
