She was born on May 23, 1923, to Edward and Anna (Walters) Beck in Bear Valley, (Richland Co, WI). Mary married Eugene A. Beck on Oct. 8, 1946. They lived in Plain, Madison, and finally settled in Monona, WI. Eugene preceded her in death on June 30, 1966, after 20 years of marriage. After her husband's death, Mary became a C.N.A. at the old Madison General Hospital (Meriter) for 20 years and did private care for the next eight years. Mary was compassionate and so energetic, her co-workers said she "set the pace." Mary lovingly raised her children alone, and surrounded her family with love and security. Mary enjoyed living in Monona, and made many friends at her church, Immaculate Heart of Mary, the St. Ann Society and the Monona Senior Center. Mary enjoyed attending dances at the East Side Businessmen's Association for many years. Mary is survived by a sister, Helen Hess; four children, Norma (Dave) Moody of Wyoming, Charlene (Bill) Needham of Middleton, Rosalie (Ed Heinzelman) Beck of Milwaukee, and Richard (Karen) Beck of Madison. Mary's oldest son, Larry (Kathy) preceded her in death on May 9, 2001. Mary has eight grandchildren, Robin, Trisha, Chris, Jeff, Brittany, Amber, Randy and Jamie. She also has seven great-grandchildren, Enzo, Ellie, Gabriel, Neve', Christopher, James and Aubrey. Mary has many nieces and nephews. Mary made friends wherever she went, charming people with her smile and wit.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL and CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, and also on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. We wish to thank the compassionate staff at HospiceCare, Inc. for the wonderful care of our dear mother. We wish to also thank the many aides at Oak Park, Middleton.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents Richard and Clara Gassen, her husband, John Weitzel, a son John Weitzel, a daughter Patricia Kanable, brothers Martin, Francis, Gilbert, Lawrence and James Gassen, 2 sisters Agnes Walsh and Martha Eckert and a son-in-law Jerry Crook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary’s the Assumption Catholic Church in Richland Center. Monsignor Roger Scheckel will officiate with burial in the church cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at the Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center from 4:00P.M. – 7:00 PM where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM. Visitation will also be held on Thursday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers memorials be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Schmitt Woodland Hills.
