  • At Westford, Richland, Wisconsin, William Duren, a native of Prussia, came from that country in 1856 and entered land on section 2, living there until 1866, when he bought land on section 14.
  • Six of the Duren children were born in House Duren in Sinsteden.

Records show that Wilhelm traveled from Antwerp to Southampton, England to New York, USA arriving via the ship Constitution on December 22, 1856. He would have just turned 37 years of age four days prior.

With Wilhelm on the same ship was Gottfried Leimkuehler. There is no listing of any of the children or Anna on the ship. The two youngest children were born in Cazenovia, Richland county, Wisconsin. (editor's note: Westford township)

When Wilhelm Duren and Godfried Leimkuehler arrived in Westford Township, Richland county, Wisconsin, Wilhelm built his first home for his wife and children in Section 3 of Westford Township. He lived there until 1866. He then bought land in Sec 14 of Westford Township, where he lived and built his sawmill along the Little Baraboo River. (editor's note: Section 2)

Great-grand daughter, Joanne Duren, remembers being told that Wilhelm had his own special pew in St Anthony's church. It was in the back of the church and sat up higher than the other pews.
  • On a monument in the cemetery across the highway from the church is carved this:
"William Duren, the last of the pioneers of St. Anthony's church, born at Austel, Germany, December 9, 1819, died March 27, 1908." His wife Anna, is buried on the lot. She, the tombstone says, was also born in Germany; her birth date being November 20, 1822, and she died November 27, 1892. Mr. Duren, we believe, operated a sawmill on the Little Baraboo river not far from Germantown or Cazenovia. It was equipped with four saws and a turning lathe. This mill made stock for wagons, sleighs and some farm machinery. Later one run of stone for grinding feed was added.
Also upon the monument for William and Anna Duren is this:
    "Rev. Stephen Duren, born Sept. 15, 1856. Ordained a priest June 24, 1884; died December 6, 1937."
