Name VariationFrederick Paul Thering was also known as Fred.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth6 September 1928Frederick Paul Thering was born on 6 September 1928 at Wisconsin.
He was the son of Joseph Leo Thering and Rose V. Ederer.
Marriage14 April 1951Frederick Paul Thering married Maxine Harrington on 14 April 1951.
Death21 November 2010Frederick Paul Thering died on 21 November 2010 at age 82 Fred Thering, our beloved Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa and Friend built his stairway to heaven and shook the hand of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. Fred died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving children after a valiant, courageous fight against esophageal cancer.

Fred began his life on Sept. 6, 1928, on a farm in Wyoming Valley, Wis. Fred was one of 12 children, that grew up with a strong faith in the Lord. Fred's father passed away when Fred was 8 years old. Fred was taught by his mother at a very young age that there is, "No such thing that can't be done." Fred portrayed this in everything he did. There was never a job that he couldn't tackle nor a person that Fred wouldn't try to help! Fred was warmly known as "Freddy-1-Call Does it All" and he sure could! Anyone that Fred met was forever touched by his kindness and warmth.

Fred graduated from St. Nazianz High School and then enlisted in the Army, where he was stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., with the 11th Airborne Division. Fred married the love of his life, Maxine Harrington on April 14, 1951. They returned from Kentucky and made their home in Plain, Spring Green and settled in Madison in 1959, where he has since resided. Fred was a master of all trades; he started his career as a plumber and because Fred loved to build things, he started a lifelong career in the construction business. He could never officially retire and after his "retirement" from Badger Expediting, he became the custodian for St. Peter's Catholic Church, where he faithfully worked up until his death. He thought of St. Peter's as his second family and loved every moment spent there.

Fred was a charter member of St. Peter's and sang in the choir for more than 40 years. Fred loved working and helping others, but would never pass up a good day of fishing, playing cards, bowling, and watching sports of any kind, especially the Packers and Badgers. After his wife passed away, Fred took over her talents for baking - Fred was known for his apple pies, dinner rolls and Tuna Puffs! Fred's greatest joy was spending time with his family and sharing his great sense of humor with them!

Fred is survived by his loving children, Debra Pappas of Spring Green, Gloria (Mark) Brown of Sun Prairie, David (Janice) Thering of Madison, and Nancy (Ron) Mohr of Sun Prairie; nine grandchildren, Jeremy (Jenny) Pappas, Lisa (Rod) Pastorius, Corey Thering, Jason (Justine) Myers, Travis (Alexis) Thering, Stefanie (Craig) Niesen, Alyson and Nick Mohr, Brandon Thering, Catrina Mohr and Elliott Gilbertson-Brown; and nine great-grandchildren, Jacelynn, Kasey, Kenna, Treyson, Tiana, Grace, Ethan, Carter and Riley. He is also survived by his sisters, Florence, Roseann and Joann; and a brother, Leo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine in January 2004; his parents, Joseph and Rose; brothers, Harlan, Louis, Joseph and Alphonse; and sisters, Grace, Dorothy and Sister Josalia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2010, at ST. PETER'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave., Madison with Monsignor Charles Schluter and Father Roger Nilles officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Ave., where the Knight's of Columbus will recite the Rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred's honor should be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church or HospiceCare Inc., Madison.

The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Peter's and HospiceCare for making his final days so peaceful.

Lavonne Darlene (Jacobs) Engelbrecht was born August 29, 1925, in rural Le Mars, IA, the daughter of Minnie and Fred Jacobs. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Akron, IA. She graduated from Central High School in Le Mars, IA, in 1942. After graduation, Lavonne worked at the Le Mars Co-Op in the secretarial/book-keeping department. It was at work that she met Melvin Engelbrecht. Lavonne and Mel were married at St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Akron on February 21, 1946. It was a beautiful wedding followed by a reception at the Jacob’s home and a honeymoon in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota.

On February 23, 1947, a son, James Allen was born…followed by three more children…Jean Anne…Mary Olea…and Mark Melvin. It was a fun and busy home, welcoming friends and relatives to join the family for dinners that were filled with good food, lively conversation and much laughter. Lavonne would often quiet everyone down by reminding the family that this might be too much for Mel… “remember he was an only child…he just can’t handle all the laughter.” The warning never worked and usually raised the level of fun. Family life was always a priority for Lavonne. One of Lavonne’s favorite activities was the annual family vacation together at Okoboji’s Vacation Village and later at Dickerson’s Lake Florida Resort in Minnesota. It was a highlight for the whole family. Over the years, Lavonne traveled across the country visiting her children and often caring for her grandchildren. Family was the center of her life. Lavonne was a caregiver for her children and grandchildren and especially for her mother and husband during long periods of health issues in both of their lives.

Lavonne instilled faith in her children…prayers were a must at meals and bedtime. During the catechism years, lessons and memory work needed to be completed and recited before social activities were allowed. Church attendance was a requirement followed by a family dinner with grandparents. Lavonne was active in the Women of the ELC, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, “Do-Day,” Bible Study, and, after retirement, an afternoon of quilting at Church became her “new job.”

Lavonne was a working mother…30 years at Well’s Dairy in the book-keeping department. The Well’s Gals became extended family to Lavonne with many of her co-workers calling her “Mom” and forming life-long friendships. Lavonne was so honored to be on the employee recognition plaque at the Well’s Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor for her thirty faithful years.

Lavonne is survived by her sister, Inez Borchers of Akron, IA. Her children: Dr. Jim Engelbrecht (Marilynn) of Rapid City, SD, the Rev. Dr. Jean Ziettlow (Richard) of Le Mars, IA, Mary Klemme (Rod) of Menomonee Falls, WI, and Mark Engelbrecht (Annie) of Brooklyn, NY; a granddaughter, Amy Ziettlow (Michael Karunas) and children Thomas, Isabella and Luke of Decatur, IL; a grandson, John Engelbrecht (Kalmia) and children Josh and Adam of Iowa City, IA; a granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Kruger (Kevin) and children Amy Grace and Kaitlyn of Rapid City, SD; a grandson, Craig Ziettlow (Lindsay) and children Chris and Carter of Tulsa, OK; a grandson Scott (Megan) and child Ella Ray of Carlsbad, CA; a granddaughter Katy Bechler (Shane) and child Ada of Menlo Park, CA; a granddaughter Stephanie Engelbrecht and children Caleb and Matthew of Rapid City, SD; and granddaughter Maryanne Gradowitz (Sean) of Brooklyn, NY.

Lavonne was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Minnie Jacobs, her husband, Mel Engelbrecht, her sister, Shirley Morgenthaler, brothers-in-law, Dave Morgenthaler and Myron Borchers, and a nephew, Steve Morgenthaler.
  • On 20 July 1949 at 2nd birthday party for Jimmie Engelbrecht including 9 grandparents, great-grandparents.
