Raymond Henry Uthe, 93, of rural Boone, died Monday, May 19, at Madrid Home in Madrid. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 22, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Raymond Henry Uthe was born Feb. 15, 1915, in Boone County, to Frank and Martha (Elsner) Uthe. He married Helen Cooper Jan. 2, 1940. He was a farmer all his life and they farmed in Williams, Ellsworth and finally in Boone since 1956.

He is survived by two daughters, Colleen (Bernard) Anderson, of Kankakee, Ill., and Janet (Rex) Ramsay, of Des Moines; one son, Donald (Janice) Uthe, of Ames; six grandchildren, Lisa Ramsay, Katie Ramsay, Scott (Jaque) Uthe, Stacy Uthe, Stephanie Uthe and Kevin Uthe; and one great-grandson, Ryan Uthe.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Eugene; his wife, Helen; four brothers; and five sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 20 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Monday, February 19 at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. A Christian vigil service will follow visitation. Burial will be in the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Nevada.

Sylvester was born September 27, 1918, at the home place northwest of Gilbert, to Frank Sr. and Martha (Elsner) Uthe. He attended a one-room school in rural Boone County and Gilbert High School. He married Lila N. Mortvedt on January 18, 1944 at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in rural Story County. They lived on the home place near Gilbert before moving to a farm south of Ames. They farmed there for 23 years. In 1970 they bought a farm south of Nevada where they lived and farmed for 37 years. Sylvester passed his love of farming onto his son and grandson. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Story County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his family and teasing his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lila Uthe of Nevada; daughters Linda Uthe of Nevada, Anita Uthe of Nevada, Marlene (Lyle) Borkowski of Manning, Karen (Alan) Knaphus of McCallsburg and son Doug (Sue) Uthe of Nevada; grandchildren Renee and Ross Uthe and Kari and Amy Borkowski; one brother Raymond Uthe of Ames, and one sister Dorothy Welsh of Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and five sisters.

Dorothy was born November 19, 1921, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Elsnor) Uthe. She graduated from Story City High School in 1940 and was united in marriage to Lawrence Edward Welsh on November 26, 1945, in Boone. Dorothy worked for Donnelly’s Marketing in Nevada, retiring in 1986 and had worked part time at Casey’s in Colo retiring in 2016. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo and enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Eugene “Gene” Welsh of Colo, Joanne (Jay) Mackey of The Villages, FL and Robert “Bob” Welsh (Penny Cummings) of Colo; one granddaughter, Theresa (Ryan) Maher of Ira; three great-grandchildren: Chase, Jordan and Abby Maher; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a daughter-in-law, Barb Welsh.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Johnston was employed by the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1982. She was born in Kieler, Wis., daughter of Frank and Madeline (Brandt) Bertjens. She attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School, in Kieler. She married Kenneth W. Johnston on July 29, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Sept. 21, 1974. Marie was a member of Holy Trinity Parish. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Surviving are two daughters, Shelia Urban and Sharon (Jim) Jones, both of Dubuque; two sons, Richard (Sharon) Johnston, of Dubuque, and Ronnie (Linda) Johnston, of Long Grove, Iowa; her grandchildren, Kim Donnan, Elizabeth Weekley, Gary Urban, Jim Urban, Clark Urban, Julie Fry, Tara Ralph, Ricky Johnston and Cody Johnston; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elda Uthe, of Dubuque; and a brother, Merlin (Lillian) Bertjens, of Kieler, Wis. She also was preceded in death by her parents. In lieu of flowers a Marie Johnston Memorial Fund has been established. A special thank-you to Dr. Lawrence Kukla, Dr. Luke Dolan and the staff of Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care of mom.

Death27 December 2008Merlin M. Bertjens died on 27 December 2008 at age 82 On Saturday, Dec., 27, 2008, the Lord called his faithful son, Merlin M. "Perky" Bertjens, to join Him in Heaven. Merlin, age 82 of Kieler, died after an 18 month battle with cancer. Merlin was born June 30, 1926, to Frank and Madeline (Brant) Bertjens. He was the youngest of three children. After serving in the United States Navy at the end of World War II, he wed Lillian "Lynn" Seippel of Beetown on Aug. 25, 1951, in Dubuque, Iowa. Together, Merlin and Lillian raised six children on the family farm where he was born and raised. Merlin was a devout Catholic and lifetime member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Kieler. Merlin was regarded as a superior diesel mechanic, retiring from Tschiggfrie Excavating in 1991. He also worked for International Harvester, the Kieler Garage, Goerdt Construction, and Guy's Truck and Tractor in his tenure. In addition, he maintained the tradition of farming dairy cattle and hogs. Merlin was a member of the American Legion Henry Pinch Post 104 of Cuba City, and he was proud to have served his country. In addition, he served as a volunteer firefighter for the Jamestown Fire Department for many years. Merlin and friends were instrumental in starting the Jamestown Fire Department. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his son, grandsons, and sons-in-law. Fishing vacations to northern Wisconsin were among his fondest memories. Merlin especially enjoyed coon hunting, both for pleasure and competition. His trophy room is a tribute to his success in breeding and training coon hounds. Merlin is survived by his dearly beloved wife of 57 years, Lillian; four daughters, Deborah C. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH in Kieler with the Rev. Bernard Rott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH CENTER in Kieler where the parish wake service will be held at 2 p.m. The Casey Funeral Home and Cremation Services will be in charge of arrangements.
