    Chet was born March 16, 1918, in Eau Claire to Anthony and Clara (Olson) Smuhl. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On August 3, 1940, he married Marie Comerford in Decorah, Iowa. Chet earned an electrical degree, and worked as an electrical contractor and master electrician for many years. He owned and operated his hardware store on Eddy Lane in Eau Claire. He continued his schooling, receiving a master?s degree from the UW-Stout in 1978. He taught at Fort McCoy, Wis., Greenwood, Wis., North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D., Racine Technical College in Racine, Wis., and Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, from which he retired in 1983. He was a 55-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

    Chet was a Boy Scout leader and ham radio operator with call letters WD9AQO. He enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, oil painting, painting, writing stories, compiling his life story, his computer, making wooden decorations and going on twinkie parties with his granddaughters. His most enjoyable times were spent with his family, who loved having him around. He gave of his love and his time freely to his family, friends and anyone in need.

    Chet had a vivid imagination and inquisitive mind about life, the universe and everything around him, always teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he came from Mars.

    Chet is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marie; two daughters, Dawne (Richard) Schreiner-Sutton and Debra Smuhl Wedlund, both of Eau Claire; two sons, James (Jaye) of Hastings, Minn., and Michael of Cadott; 12 grandchildren, Jan Paul (Heidi) Schreiner, James Alan (Chris) Schreiner, Jeffrey Michael (Becka) Schreiner, Lori Ann Schreiner, Chad Smuhl, Kyle Smuhl, Tony Smuhl, Bailey Smuhl, Sydney Dun, David Smuhl, Patricia Wedlund and Amanda Wedlund; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

    Chet is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Herbert; daughter-in-law, Devon ?Dee? Dewey; and one nephew, Robert Smuhl.

    Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday, December 7, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Bill Dhein officiating. Inurnment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date.

    Relatives and friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Golden Funeral Home, and Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
