He was born Dec. 3, 1921, to Nick Walech and Genevieve (Rupp) Walech in Dubuque. Ed was a Veteran of World War II. He worked for H&W Motor Express in Dubuque for over 34 years, retiring at the end of 1981. He served for 43 years on General Drivers Credit Union and 30 years on teamster union board.

He had just celebrated his birthday with his morning-coffee-friends, many of whom had been enjoying meeting with him for the almost daily event for over 20 years. And he was looking forward to preparing a hasenpfeffer feast for a friend who had provided him with the squirrels.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years on April 24, 2013; a sister, Grace; two brothers John and David.

He is survived by a sister, Suzanne Miller, of Lenoir, N.C., and nieces and nephews.

Per his wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be at a later date in Memorial Gardens, Dubuque, next to his beloved Delores. He spoke often of the many travels they experience together in life. Now they travel together for eternity.

After his retirement, Bud spent countless hours doing odd jobs for family and friends. He was born on June 7, 1920, in Dubuque, son of Arnold and Maude (Rupp) Muntz. He married Betty M. Burris on Feb. 12, 1943, in Dubuque. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working in his garden and chatting with his neighbors. Bud loved getting around the neighborhood on his John Deere riding lawn mower. He was a member of the Dubuque Masonic Temple, John Deere Retirees, and a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Betty M. Muntz, of Dubuque; two sons, Gary L. (Andrea) Muntz and Jim F. (Charlene) Muntz, both of Dubuque; grandchildren, Jennifer Muntz, Greg Muntz, Amy Paulsen and Rachel Muntz; a great-grandson, Jacob Paulsen; a sister, Irene Goetzinger; a brother, Richard (Delores) Muntz; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an older sister, Grace Sanders and a younger sister, Jannan Miller. A Lowell A. Muntz Memorial Fund has been established.

Death5 August 2020Irene Rachel Muntz died on 5 August 2020 at age 97 Irene Rachel Goetzinger 97, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 10th at the Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 JFK Rd. with Deacon John Stierman officiating. For those unable to attend, a live stream of services can be viewed on our funeral home page on Facebook. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services Monday. Please utilize masks as well as social distancing for the duration of your visit. Irene’s family understands if you are unable to attend, please remember them in your prayers.
Irene was born on October 14, 1922 in Dubuque, the daughter of Arnold and Maud (Rupp) Muntz. She lived in Dubuque her entire life. Irene was an extremely hard worker. She worked on the family farm helping her parents grow produce for the farmer’s market during the Depression. She continued her support by working at Clarke College, Lorenz Laundry and the Dubuque Packing Company. Irene then became a full-time housewife and mother until going back to work as a bus driver for the Dubuque Community School District, retiring after 20 years of service.
Irene loved bowling (winning many trophies), flowers, gardening and her cat, Prince. She was an avid Green Bay Packer and Chicago Cub fan. She enjoyed music, dancing, traveling, playing dice and especially being with her family. She loved going to Cozy Corner for many years. Irene was a wonderful cook. In her younger years, she enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader and participated in community volleyball and softball leagues.
Surviving are her six children, Diane Smith-Bowers, Gloria (Sonny) McDonald, Robert (Janice) Smith, Richard (Maureen) Smith all of Dubuque, Linda McDermott of Big Lake, MN and David (Maura) Smith of Missouri Valley, IA; many grandchildren; great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; her special godchild Elaine “Toots” Kieffer of Dubuque; her brother, Richard (Delores) Muntz of Dubuque and many nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles; her first husband and father of her children, Robert W. Smith; her sisters Grace Sanders and Jannan Miller; and her brother-in-law Ray; her brother Lowell “Bud” Muntz and sister-in-law Betty; her grandson Raymond P. McDonald III; infant grandson Gregory McDonald and infant great grandson Brett McDonald.
