Janice was born on a farm in Iowa but was raised in Richmond, California, where she lived most of her life. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1959. She worked as an elementary school teacher for 37 years, most of which was spent at Ellerhorst Elementary, where she was beloved by her students — as evidenced from the piles of gifts in her home. Janice is survived by her husband Pat, son Shawn, brother Dick, grandson's Eli and Noah, and several nieces and nephews. She was always welcoming and kind to everyone who came to her home, which remained a meeting place for Shawn and his friends even after he moved out, and she always had cookies and drinks ready for visitors. On Tuesday, May 10, 2022, there will be a burial service held at Sunset View Cemetery, starting at 1:30 PM. |

Barry, the son of Norman and Ruth (Brunken) Jurgenson, was born October 6, 1952, in Hawarden, Iowa. He graduated from LeMars Community High School in 1970 and was drafted into the United States Army in 1972. After proudly serving his country for two years, Barry worked at Sioux Tools until 1998. He later worked at Culligan, Pella, and Staples before starting a painting business with his brother, Roger. Barry retired in 2019. Barry married Patricia Mae Johnson August 23, 1975. Struble, Iowa, was home for 36 years of their marriage; there, he served as a councilman. Barry and Pat were blessed with four children. He cherished and delighted in his children and grandchildren. Barry was baptized into Christ in 1999, worshipping at the Third Street church of Christ and, later, the Sioux Center church of Christ. He had a heart for helping people and it was his constant prayer to recognize the needs of others. In 2019, Barry and Pat moved to Kearney, Missouri, and became active members of the Liberty church of Christ, where he served as a benevolence deacon. Barry was a man of few words but had a quick wit and loved to make people smile. An avid Hawkeye fan, he enjoyed watching Iowa’s football and basketball games. He proudly wore black and gold anywhere and everywhere. Barry loved muscle cars—Chevy muscle cars—particularly the ‘72 Nova and the Corvettes he owned. He used his creativity in large and small home improvement projects as well as woodworking. Left to cherish Barry’s memory are his wife, Pat; their children: Jessica (Jeff) Kowalke, Tim (Kate) Jurgenson, and Carl (Heather) Jurgenson; grandchildren: Collin Shafer, Caleb Shafer, Alysse Kowalke, Cooper Jurgenson, Konnor Kowalke, and Paige Jurgenson; siblings: Dave (Judy) Jurgenson, Roger Jurgenson, Pat (Larry) Lewis, Marla Young, many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and friends. Preceding him in death are his daughter, Jill Jurgenson; his parents, Norman and Ruth Jurgenson; his mother-in-law, Edith Johnson; his brother-in-law, Denny Young. Baack, 71, of Luverne, Minnesota and formerly of Sheldon, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2022, at Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, Minnesota. Dennis Lee Baack, the son of Donald Carl and LaVonne (Jurgenson) Baack was born Oct. 20, 1950, in Le Mars. Dennis attended school in Le Mars and graduated Le Mars Community School High School 1968. He joined the United States Air Force in January of 1969 and served in the Vietnam War, he was honorably discharged in January of 1975 in Denver, Colorado with the rank of E-4. After his discharge he remained in Colorado where he attended Rocky Mountain State University for a while, he moved back to Le Mars and attended a year at Western Iowa Technical College. Dennis met the love of his life, Shannon Faye Hulst at the Man Trap Beauty Salon in Le Mars and the two were united in marriage on Feb. 11, 1977 in Hull. They moved to Sheldon in 1978 and Dennis worked at Land-O-Lakes in Sheldon as a Pellet Mill Operator for 20 years retiring in 2008. Dennis and Shannon moved to Luverne, Minnesota in 2021. Dennis was a member of the American Reformed Church in Luverne, Minnesota and was a past member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon where he had served on the Outreach Committee and the Consistory. He was a member of the Sheldon Prairie Queen Kiwanis, the Sheldon American Legion Post # 145 and the VFW Post 7373. Dennis loved hunting, fishing, woodworking, but most of all he enjoyed being with his boys and grandkids. He is survived by his wife, Shannon of Luverne, Minnesota; their three sons, Eric (Donna) Baack of Crooks, South Dakota; Jesse Baack and Dan Baack both of Archer; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Caleb, Ethan, Briggs, Jada, Savanah and Isaac; a sister, Susan (Tim) Bachman of Aurora, Colorado; a brother, Jim (Brenda) Baack of Le Mars; four very special nieces and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. His funeral service was held January 20, at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon with Rev. Paul Van Maaren and Rev. Mike Altena officiating. Burial will be at South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Wednesday, Jan. 26. |

Rather than go to college, she married Melvin Nielsen on February 16, 1938 at Rosini Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, South Dakota, and got her degree at being a farmer’s wife and mother of 5 sons: Jerry, Merlin, Norman, Roger, and Loren. Lois and Melvin lived together on a farm in Union County, South Dakota for over 71 years until moving to Akron. Melvin passed away October 5, 2014 in Akron. She was a member of Brule Creek Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, South Dakota where she was active in the ladies aide for many years. Through the years, Lois enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and doing many crafts. Her favorite crafts were China painting and making many quilts. Survivors include her sons: Merlin Nielsen (special friend, Bev) of Madison, SD, Norman (Elvira) Nielsen of Le Mars, IA, Roger Nielsen (special friend, Denice) of Akron, IA, and Loren (Nancy) Nielsen of Akron, IA; 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was united in marriage to Lois Mc Corkell on February 16, 1939 at Rosini Lutheran Church, rural Beresford, South Dakota. Together, they are the parents of 5 sons, Jerry, Merlin, Norman, Roger, and Loren. Melvin and Lois lived together on the farm for over 71 years until moving to Akron. Melvin was a lifelong member of Brule Creek Lutheran Church. After retiring, he took up gardening and restoring furniture. He also enjoyed throwing horse shoes, golfing, bowling, hunting, and playing cards with friends. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins. He will be greatly missed. Since her father was a minister, Irene was born in Alexandria, but also lived in Fairfield (now part of Fairborn), Ohio, and Grosse Point Park, Michigan, before arriving in Cleveland in 1945. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953, then received a B.A. in education from Heidelberg College (Tiffin, Ohio) in 1957. After two years as a teacher at Cleveland's West Denison Elementary, Irene turned her attention to being a full-time wife and mother. For years, she devoted much of her "spare time" to volunteering for the PTA and Camp Fire Girls. When she eventually re-entered the workforce, Irene was employed in turn by David Young Insurance, Donlevy's Back Room, Maternity Wearhouse, and Becker's Uniforms. Irene is survived by sister Esther Schmitt of The Villages, Florida, She was predeceased by parents Huber and Miriam Klemme, as well as brother Paul Klemme. In lieu of flowers, contributions to a charity devoted to childhood education or heart disease research would be appreciated. The family plans to hold a memorial service in the summer if large gatherings are permitted by then. |

Death | 25 November 2009 | He died on 25 November 2009 at age 82 Laurel "Blackie" Berger, 82 of Fairview Heights, Ill., formerly of O'Fallon, born Dec. 27, 1926 in Trenton, Ill., died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill. Mr. Berger graduated from Trenton High School in 1944, attended McKendree College from 1944-1945, the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla, Mo., receiving his B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1950. He had worked for the Division of Highways, District 8, as an inspector, the Division of Waterways in Springfield and for the Illinois Division of Highways, District 8, Bureaus of Design and Construction as a Design Engineer, from 1951 until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1984. Several of his accomplishments consist of the design of the Poplar Street Complex approaches on I-55/70 to the Mississippi River crossing, the esthetic design of I-255 through the Metro-East area, a unique dewatering system on I-55/70 and I-64, and the Great River Road from Alton to Grafton with bike trail that won the PRIDE award. Following retirement, he was a seven year consultant for a professional engineering firm, designing the noise abatement walls for the new North-South toll way on the Westside of Chicago and on April 6, 1989 was awarded the Annual Honorary Membership Award by the St. Clair and Capital Chapters of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers. Blackie was an Illinois and Missouri Professional Engineer, an Illinois Land Surveyor, a member of the Illinois Highway Engineers, serving as President in 1954 and on the Board from 1955-1957. He was also a member of The Illinois Society of Professional Engineers serving as Secretary 1975-1976, Vice President in 1977, President elect in 1978, President from 1979-1980 and the Chapter Representative. He was also a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He was inducted into the University of Missouri, Rolla Academy of Civil Engineers. He was also a member of the O'Fallon Grade School Board, 1962-1969, serving as President in 1968, on the O'Fallon Planning Commission from 1963-1970, serving as President from 1965-1970, the O'Fallon Park Board from 1974-1977, serving as Vice-President in 1977. He was a member of the O'Fallon United Church of Christ and a member of the Consistory, serving as President in 1974, the OUCC 50+ Club, a member of the O'Fallon Sportsman's Club, and the O'Fallon and Fairview Heights Moose Lodges. Blackie also served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed playing cards, golf, bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, cooking, gardening and traveling. He traveled extensively with his wife, Elaine, to many European countries, Canada, Russia, Mexico and all 50 states. Blackie was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elsie, nee Kuhn, Berger; his first wife, Mary, nee Emmett, Berger; son-in-law, Gary Harvell; sister, Jean Vandas; twin brother, Lauren "Whitie" Berger; and a sister-in-law, Carol Berger. He is survived by his wife, Elaine, nee Klemme, Simpson-Berger of Fairview Heights, Ill., whom he married June 14, 1997; a son, Gary Berger of O'Fallon, Ill; two daughters, Laura Harvell of Los Angeles, Calif., and Shari (Joseph) Kern of Webster Groves, Mo; step daughter, Annette (Dr. Kevin) Pritchett of Swansea, Ill; step son, Steven (Debbie) Simpson of Swansea, Ill; five grandchildren, Leann (Casey) McHugh, Stephanie Harvell, Joseph Harvell, Morgan Kern, and Danielle Kern; step grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren and Shannon Pritchett, and Cory Simpson; a great-grandchild, Brogan McHugh; brother-in-law, Elmer "Van" Vandas; and nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Schildknecht Funeral Home and Cremation Services, O'Fallon, Ill. Funeral: Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at O'Fallon United Church of Christ with Rev. Dr. Martha Thierheimer officiating.
