Fred Krejci was born in 1903 to Mr. and Mrs. John Krejci and lived all but one year in Fillmore County, Nebraska. Fred took an art correspondence course and attended the Omaha Art School in 1930. Because of the Great Depression he was unable to be an artist full time, so he stayed in Fillmore County and farmed. He painted in his free time. From 1946-1963, thirty-two of his paintings were used for the covers of "Magazine of the Midlands," Sunday Omaha World-Herald. In 1979 he received the Purchase Art Award from the Association of Nebraska Art clubs. He died January 19, 1983.

This collection consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and photographs about Fred Krejci and his artwork. Of special note is an original sketch that was used for the Exeter, Nebraska, centennial history book, They Called It Exeter.

A Labor of Love: Stromsburg writer publishes book about Krejci
- January 10, 2018 - The Grand Island Independent (Nebraska)

STROMSBURG – When Ben Benegas bought a painting at the Stromsburg city-wide garage sale, he had no idea that it would be the start of a 2 1/2 year adventure into the life of painter Fred Krejci.

After purchasing the painting, Benegas was really struck by the piece. He and his wife, Denise, have always shared a love for art and history, but this painting left an impression, so they began exploring this specific Nebraskan painter.

"I started thinking, well, who is this guy because he seems awfully good," said Benegas. "So I decided to do some more digging into who he was."

The labor of love ensued . . . volumes of information was gathered.

Once everything was collected, Benegas wrote and published a book, Fred Krejci Nebraska's Artistic Treasure.

Fred Krejci was a Nebraskan painter from Fillmore County who lived from 1902 to 1982. His grandparents, Frank Sr. and Barbara Krejci, settled in Nebraska from Czechoslovakia in 1879 after which they purchased a farm just outside of Exeter. Krejci's parents, John and Ann Kucera Krejci, remained on the farm, which gave way for him and his siblings to stay on the farm for most of their lives as well.

At the young age of five, Krejci first began sketching farm animals, which later gave way to his artistic career. In 1927, he enrolled in a correspondence course in commercial art at the Federal School of Cartooning and Illustration in Minneapolis, Minn., which lasted for three years. This is the same school that Charles Schulz attended and later became famous with the Peanuts cartoon.

While Krejci attended school, he kept a sketch book, which is currently being preserved at the Nebraska History Museum in Lincoln. Benegas was able to study the sketch book for his publication about Krejci, thanks to the generosity of the museum. He includes photographs of the original sketches in the book.

After completing the correspondence course, Krejci went on to study at the Omaha Art School for one year under Wayne Wilson and J. Lawrie Wallace. Wilson encouraged him to go on to study in Chicago, but financial reasons kept him from doing so.

Because of the confines of the Great Depression, Krejci went back to his family farm and continued his work there. At the time, there were no jobs for anyone, especially for a commercial artist. He never gave up painting though; in his free time, the painting continued.

Krejci decided to go out on a limb and start a photography studio in 1934, but after the attempt failed, he returned to working on the farm.

Finally, things began looking up for the aspiring artist when he accepted his first artist job with Farmers and Merchants Bank of Milligan. Krejci began drawing the covers for the bank bulletin, which he continued doing until the end of 1931. Since there was no local newspaper at the time, the bank bulletin was responsible for spreading all the news for the Milligan community.

For his book about Krejci, Benegas was able to track down the bank bulletins and include them in the book. He said it was no easy task to obtain all those covers, but it was well worth the payoff of being able to include them.

Perhaps the biggest break for Krejci's career was the Sunday Omaha World-Herald contest for Midlands magazine covers. Krejci entered his painting "First Snow," which was black and white, and won the contest in 1946.

After winning, he had 32 of his paintings become the covers of Midlands Magazine. The Sunday Omaha World Herald had a large circulation, which gave Krejci major exposure. Eventually he became well known in the Midwest for his work.

Although many of the original paintings could not be found, Benegas was able to track down all of the Sunday World-Herald Magazine covers for his book. Each cover is displayed.

Krejci completed about 92 paintings even while farming and 100 more after he retired. His paintings focused on farm scenes and wildlife.

Once off the farm, he joined the Geneva Art Association and became a charter member. This experience led him on to win many awards and honors.

In 1971, he and his siblings, Louis and Anna Mae, built a house in Exeter and moved off of the farm. All three Krejcis remained unmarried and lived together their entire lives. Even now they are buried together and share a gravestone.

Krejci died in 1983, and afterwards, the Geneva Art Association presented a book titled American Realists to the Exeter library in his honor.

After learning about the artist, Benegas said he wanted to share his findings to keep Krejci and his work alive.

"I didn't want his history to disappear," he said.

Benegas came across a Nebraska artistic treasure that day at the garage sale, and instead of simply hanging the painting and moving on, he decided to go on an adventure.

Through their experiences, Benegas and his wife have found that many people who own one of Krejci's paintings don't even realize the treasure that they have, but by seeking these paintings, they have encouraged people to appreciate these works of art.

Krejci captured pieces of Nebraska history in his art, Benegas said, and his farm and wildlife scenes especially bring forth a vital element to the agricultural history of this state.

"This book was put together so that this wonderful artist would not be forgotten. I feel his life was torn between what he needed to do versus what he loved to do," writes Benegas in the book introduction.

Those interested in learning about Krejci's history and work can purchase the book, "Fred Krejci Nebraska's Artistic Treasure," which not only includes a detailed story but also a collection of artwork in one place.
