The Leibenguth line started in Switzerland, immigrated to Germany in the mid to late 1600's and onto America in 1733. (Johann) Phillip Leibenguth came to America with his wife and several of his children, through Philadelpha, PA and settled in Egypt, PA.

The family name existed in the form of Leibundgut in Switzerland especially in the Canton of Berne and more specifically in the district of Arrwangen. To the southwest of Langenthal in Berne is located the township of Melchnau, which before the Reformation came under the control of the Grossdietwil Parish. This parish is located in the Lucerne Canton. For having taken part in the peasant war (DHBS) a Damian Leibundgut of Melchnau was hanged in Langenthal in June 1653. This war of the Swiss peasantry witnessed the exodus of numerous families from the Lucerne Canton as well as from the Berne Canton. Alsace, which had just gone through the disastrous 30-years War, and was enjoying a temporary peace period, embraced its support of petitioners for emigration from Switzerland. Generally belonging to the Reform religion, the Liebenguts headed for the small republic of Mulhouse, which being an ally of the Swiss Cantons also practiced the Protestant faith.
