Marriage18 August 1861Patrick M. McCluskey married Elizabeth Jane Lane on 18 August 1861 at second marriage for her; first for him.
Death17 March 1922Patrick M. McCluskey died on 17 March 1922 at age 96 Dies at Age of Ninety-six Years-Last of Early Irish Settlers in Clyde. Patrick McCluskey, known by all who were intimate with him as "Grandpa" McCluskey, died March 17, 1922, on the farm in the town of Clyde which had been his home for almost half a century, at the age of 96 years. His aged wife preceeded him in death April 12, 1918. Funeral services were held March 20 at St. Malachi's church, conducted by Rev. Fr. Kenny, with burial in St. Malachi's cemetery. Grandpa McCluskey was born in the Parish of Carrick McCross, town of Courtil, in Car Valley, Monanhan County, Ireland, March 14, 1826. He was the 3rd child of a family of five, two boys and three girls. His sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Conway, preceded him in death about seven years ago. They are the only ones who came to this part of the country to settle. He lived on a farm with his parents of the good old Irish sod until he was a man of 20 years. Then the new progressive land of America seemed to beckon him from far over the Atlantic until he could resist the call no longer, and he lest his work there and came here all alone. He landed in New York and went to Philadelphia, where some relatives who had previously come here, were living. There he worked for about a year when all of the family and Grandpa came to Dodgeville. For a while he worked near there and in Wyoming Valley and then back to the prairies near Linden, where he met Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, and Aug 18th, 1861, they were married. For a short time they made their home in Dodgeville and then purchased the farm known then as the Kerby farm, now occupied by Ile and Andrew Anderson. Here they lived 11 years. In 1872 he bought the present homestead from Tom Farrell. Two years later the family moved here and this is was his home up to the time of his death. Some years ago he sold the farm to his son Patrick, but the old couple always remained on the old place. This union was blessed with eight children, four sons and four daughters. Two daughters and one son preceded them in death. Grandpa was quiet and unassuming by nature, gentle, honest and industrious, and an excellent neighbor, always interested in every good work. He was the oldest resident of this town. The last of the Irish stock wtill living in the town of Clyde. He was always a strong man never knowing what it was to be sick until Feb. 23rd, 1922, a slight stroke of paralysis came over him from which he never recovered. The family surely will miss a good father who always seemed even to the last to be interested in each and every one. Until the very last he was conscious to make the sign of the cross and smite his breast in prayer. Mr. McCluskey is survived by three sons and two daughters, as follows; Edward, Patrick, Mary Ann (Mrs. Limmex), and Susie (Mrs. Wm. Farrell) of Clyde; and John of Livingston; two stepsons- John Rogers, Wilmont, Minn., and Will Rogers of Mineral Point; 26 grandchildren; 28 greatgrandchildren, and numerous other relatives.
The hour has come for parting, In sorrow he said goodbye,
To a kind and loving fater. Who will meet them in the sky.
He has fought life's battle bravely, His sufferings were all his own,
In the footsteps of our Saviour, He lived for God alone. His dear children are grieving, This parting cuts like a knife, He has formed new friendships in Heaven, The parting he doesn't mind. For partings are always most grievious, To those who are left behind, For the andel of death has taken pity, And offered him sweet relief. With pleasure he has gone on his journey, The parting he does not mind,For he that has gone is much happier, Than those who are left behind. CARD OF THANKS We desire to return sincere thanks to the many kind friends and neighbors, who assisted us and showed their sympathy during the sickness and death of our beloved father, Father Kenney and the Avoca choir for kind services rendered.
