In 1869, Burwell went to see his brother, Bryant B. Buffaloe, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. While there, he died suddenly and unexpectedly of "dropy of the chest." Before he died he told his brother that he had some money "sewed" in the breast of his coat and after his death his brother was to give so much to the widow and Burwell, Jr., each year. After his death, Bryant found $1,075.00 in his coat. It took 13 years to settle his estate in North Carolina. Burwell was buried in Holly Springs City Cemetery in Holly Springs, MS. Brother Bryant B. and his wife Adeline, are buried in this cemetery, also.

Note: The children that remained in Arkansas spelled their name Buffalo. The children in Wake County spelled it Buffaloe.
