Bill was born September 21, 1928 in Post, Texas to George and Tommie (Saunders) Baker. He graduated from Clyde High School in Clyde and he married Wanda June Manning on July 1, 1948 in Caps, TX.

Bill’s career in the grocery industry spanned fifty years and covered West Texas and New Mexico. He started as a truck driver for H.O. Wooten Grocers, and then was an office clerk and salesman, then owner of his own business, Bill Baker’s Finer Foods in Odessa. Lastly, he was a buyer for Watson Foods and Ben E. Keith in Lubbock.

Bill was always active in his various churches, serving as Treasurer, Sunday school teacher, Youth Director and Choir Director. For the past eleven years Bill was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and a member of the Harmony Sunday school class there.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Wanda, sons Billy Baker of Kauai, HI, Michael Baker and his wife Patty of Corpus Christi, daughters Carolyn Bender and her husband Bruce of Lubbock, Renee Rowan of Sweetwater, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one daughter, Penny Rochelle, his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

The family requests memorial donations to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 3708 45th St., Lubbock, TX 79413, or to Vista Care Hospice, 1717 Norfolk Ave., 4th Floor, Lubbock, TX 79416.
