Grace, a Navy lieutenant, will be laid to rest at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery today, Aug. 3, at 10 a.m., with military honors provided by the VFW Post 707 and American Legion Post 40.

Grace was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Beach, one of twin daughters to Louis E. and Grace (McDanold) Raisler. Joining the US Navy, Grace served as a flight nurse from October 1944 to September 1951.

On Dec. 25, 1949, she married CDR Riddell C. Hutsell and they had eight children, Sally Jean Grimland, Cynthia Ann Weast, Claudia Lynn Carson, Pamela Kay Vaughan, Riddell Clyde Hutsell Jr., Wayne Louis Hutsell, Grace Ellen Pacheco, and Elliott John Hutsell.

In 1988, Grace, fondly nicknamed Mimi, retired from a career in nursing and returned to North Dakota, her childhood home, where she spent 22 wonderful years with family and friends.

Blessed to have shared her life are her 8 children; 22 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and her twin sister, Genevieve Toto Trinka.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Constance Pope.

A beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Jo'an was a member of Ottumwa Community Players, Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello County Auxiliary and a Hospice volunteer. She was an accomplished musician, artist and poet.
Surviving is her husband, John; her 11 children, Mary Jo (John) Knight of Ottumwa, John "Jack" (Kathy) Hennen of St. Paul, MN, Michael (Aimee) Hennen of Novinger, MO, Anne (Randy) Clabaugh of Independence, MN, Theresa Holifield of Winnebago, IL, Barbara Bray of West Des Moines, Kathryn Denefe of Austin, TX, Susan (Carlos) Ruiz of St. Paul, MN, Nancy Hennen of Evry, France, David (Erin) Hennen of Lebanon, KY and Fr. Thomas Hennen of Davenport; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothea Moga of Robinsdale, MN.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica; 3 brothers, Edward Dean Hagle, James Hagle and Charles McGuire; 2 sons-in-law, Dan Denefe and Barry Holifield.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Visitation with Father Thom Hennen and Father James Betzen C.PP.S. concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday followed by family visitation until 5 p.m. Sunday.

Death27 January 2007Edward Dean Hagle died on 27 January 2007 at age 75 Edward D. Hagle, 75, a resident of Florence, died Saturday, Jan. 27 at a hospital in Eugene.
He was born Dec. 1, 1931 at Long Beach, Calif., the second of five children to Elza D. Hagle and Dorthea Louise Kaercher Hagle.
Following the death of his mother at age 35, he went to live with his mother’s twin sister, Cornelia Kaercher, first in Minneapolis, Minn. and then in Milbank, S.D.
He grew up in Milbank, and after high school attended summer school in Aberdeen, S.D., where he earned a teaching certificate. He taught all eight grades at a country school in Grand County, S.D. He upgraded his certificate with a summer of study at South Dakota State Teachers’ College, and was enrolled at the University of Minnesota when he was drafted during the Korean War. He served two years stateside, and following honorable discharge attended Fordham University in New York.
During summers while at Fordham, he came to Oregon, where he worked at his father’s orchard near Hood River. After graduation from Fordham in 1958,he returned to Oregon where his father then operated the Siuslaw Marina.
After further studies at the University of Oregon, he began teaching at Florence schools. There he met Margaret Preston, also a teacher. They were married in 1961 in The Dalles.
He taught in the Florence school system until 1975.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters Cecelia Hagle, Hillsboro and Corie Eaves, El Dorado Hills, Calif; sons Ned Hagle, Junction City, Hans Hagle, Florence and Tom Hagle, Florence; sisters Joan Hennen, Ottumwa, Iowa, and Dorthea Hagle McGuire Moga, Minneapolis; brothers James A. Hagle, Nashville, Tenn. and Charles Hagle McGuire of Minneapolis, and numerous cousins.
Service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Florence on Thursday, Feb. 1 at noon.
A scholarship fund has been set up in his memory. Memorial contributions may be sent to Siuslaw Valley Bank, P.O. Box 280, Florence, 97439.
Burns’ Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jim served in the Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota under the GI Bill. Jim worked as a journalist and spent most of his career in the public relations field. He lived with his family and worked in Duluth, MN; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Denver, CO; Naperville, IL and Nashville, TN. He also had a summer home in Bemidji, MN. Jim retired as Public Relations Director for the Burlington Northern railroad in 1984. During his career, Jim also worked for College of St. Scholastica, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Northern Pacific, Holder Kennedy, Bill Hudson and Associates and Yellow Pages of Tennessee. He belonged to the Public Relations Society of America. Jim was a member of St. Edward Church. He enjoyed outdoor activities including gardening, fishing and camping. He loved cooking, photography and travel and was devoted to and generous with friends and family. In recent years he joined Gilda's Club. He ran the Music City half marathon in 2010 and 2011 to raise money for the cancer support group. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Judith Suek Hagle; brothers, Charles McGuire and Edward Dean Hagle; parents, Dorothea Kaercher Hagle and Elza Dean Hagle. He is survived by his fiancée, Nancy Ottmann of St. Paul, MN; daughters, Julia Hagle of Bar Harbor, ME, Karen DeFore and Gretchen Hagle of Franklin, TN and their spouses; grandchildren, Taylor, Mackenzie, Jackson and Eliza DeFore, Benjamin Hagle and Nicholas Kadin; sisters, Joan Hennen of Ottumwa, IA and Dorothea Moga of Robbinsdale, MN. Reverend Joseph Patrick Breen will celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection on Monday, May 14, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Church. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. A June service is also being planned in St. Paul, MN with burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Passed away peacefully at Catholic Eldercare. Dorothea was a loving mother, sister, cousin, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. Devoted to family, friends and community, she was musically talented, opinionated, stubborn, curious, hopeful, and always looking for the best in the world.

Preceded in death by mother Dorothea (Kaercher) Hagle, father E.D. Hagle, adoptive mother Alice (Kaercher) McGuire Bernard, adoptive father E.J. McGuire, "father of her heart" Thomas Vincent Bernard, sisters Jo'An (Hagle) Hennen and her husband John, Mary McGuire Edwards, Alice Marie Antionette (Toni) Bernard; brothers Charles McGuire, Jim Hagle and his wife Judi, Ed Hagle and his wife Margaret, Michael McGuire, John Bernard; son Nicholas Richard Moga, son-in-law Phill Lindsay; former husband Richard Moga and many beloved relatives and friends.

Survived by daughters Mary Moga, Jean Dorland (Tony), Tom (Lynn) Moga; grandsons John (Sara) Moga, Brian Moga, Eric (Anastasia) Dorland; granddaughter Hannah Dorland-Baker (Chris) ; four great grand-children, Adam, Ellalouise, Vincent, and Isabella.

Dorothea was a talented musician - a singer, a pianist, a flutist, a composer, and accompanist. She played in the Stillwater High School and University of Minnesota Marching Bands. She composed Christian music in the early 1970's, and sang as a member of the Burning Hills Singers in the 1972 Medora Musical. She performed with

the Hall Brothers Jazz Band at the Emporium of Jazz in Mendota Heights; with The Elizabethan Syngers at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival, and with church and community choirs. She loved to improvise on the piano, delighting her family, friends, and, most recently, the residents of both Main Street Lodge and Catholic Eldercare.

In addition to raising her four children, she supported her family as a secretary and administrative assistant at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses and numerous businesses, including working as a trainer at Control Data. She was well-liked in her roles, making friends easily.

Dorothea was also the lifelong caregiver for her youngest son Nick, who was born with autism. Little was known about autism in 1962, and searching for the best care and treatments for Nick became her life's work. She was a fierce advocate for Nick and the autistic community. She lovingly cared for him in their home in Robbinsdale until his death in 2023.

Visitation on May 1, 2025 from 5-7 p.m. at Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, 2901 Johnson Street NE; also May 2 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Chapel, 813 NE Main Street. Funeral Mass 10:40 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Chapel. Light luncheon immediately following Mass in the Community Room in Main Street Lodge.

Michael was born on April 2nd 1939 to E.J. McGuire and Alice Kaercher in St Paul, MN, and was raised from a young age by stepfather Thomas Bernard. After graduating from Stillwater High School, he went on to study Agricultural Economics at the University of MN, where he met his future wife Barbara Revane. Michael and Barbara wed in 1972, going on to have 2 children, Molly and Dan. After a full career of working hard to support his family, Michael enjoyed his retirement by doing the thing that was most important to him during his life, which was spending time with his loved ones. In addition, Michael relished doing a variety of projects, including constructing a front porch on the family home and building a trailer from scratch. Michael was also an avid reader and loved writing short non-fiction stories about life on the family farm.

Michael was preceded in death by parents E.J. McGuire and Alice Kaercher McGuire Bernard; stepfather Thomas Bernard; and siblings Charles McGuire, John Bernard, and Mary McGuire Edwards. Michael is survived by his wife Barbara McGuire; siblings Dorothea Moga and Toni Bernard; children Molly McGuire and Dan McGuire; daughter in law Amy McGuire; grandchildren James McGuire and Lillian McGuire; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held from 9:30am-10:30am followed immediately by funeral mass on Thursday March 10th at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, located at 920 Holley Ave., St Paul Park, MN, 55071. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and or St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

A joint Mass of Christian Burial will be held to honor and celebrate the lives of Alice "Toni" Bernard and her brother, John Bernard, who passed away on February 28, 2020, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Milbank, SD. Fr. Brian Eckrich will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at Mundwiler Funeral Home in Milbank, SD. A prayer vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the Mass. Inurnment will be at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.

Alice “Toni” Marie Antoinette Bernard grew up on a farm in Woodbury, MN, with her five siblings and often spent time with her close cousins, the Sanzones and Yaegers. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in French and Native American Studies. During her time at the university, she lived with her future sister-in-law, Barbara Jane “BJ” Revane McGuire, and future cousin-in-law, Joelie Tessari Hicks.

While attending school and for many years after graduation, Toni worked at the University of Minnesota Libraries and Bookstores. She also helped several nieces and nephews learn how to navigate the large campus during this time. She had a deep love for history, particularly Native American and French-American history. This passion led her to work for the Minnesota Historical Society for several years. She also worked at Fort Snelling and participated in the Grand Portage Rendezvous. She enjoyed bringing history to life at both places.

An excellent artist, Toni was well known for her drawings of horses and Native Americans. She lived in Walker, MN, for a few years before returning to Woodbury. After her mother passed away, she and her brother John moved to Milbank.

For many years, Toni lived in the Kaercher family home on Park Avenue, where her mother had been raised. She was active with the Grant County Historical Society and volunteered at the Milbank Historical House, Grant County Historical Museum, Community Thrift Shop, and the Grant County Library.

Toni and John were frequent visitors to the Mill Theatres, where they loved spending time with employees, customers, and their cousins, Rob and Joelie Hicks, who own the theater. Both Toni and John cherished the friendships they made there and enjoyed being involved in the lives of young people in their community.

Toni is survived by her sister, Dorothea Moga; sisters-in-law, Rose McGuire; and Barbara Jane “BJ” McGuire; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas Bernard and Alice Kaercher McGuire Bernard; her brothers: Charles McGuire; Michael McGuire; John Bernard; and her sister, Mary McGuire Edwards.

John Thomas Bernard was born on March 11, 1953, in Minneapolis, MN, to Thomas Vincent and Alice (Kaercher) Bernard. He grew up in Woodbury, MN. He graduated high school in 1971 and attended the University of Minnesota. John was a loving care-taker for his family and friends. For a number of years, John enjoyed playing Santa Claus at Emanuel Lutheran Church. He will be remembered for saying, “Uncle John doesn’t think that is a good idea!” John enjoyed spending time at Mill Theater and visiting with friends. He also enjoyed trap shooting, hunting, and deer camp. John was a very inclusive person. If someone in a group was uncomfortable, he would get up, introduce himself, and help make them feel included. He made many friends by including new people in his activities or conversations.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters: Dorothea Moga of Minneapolis, MN; and Alice “Toni” Bernard of Milbank, SD; one brother, Michael (Barbara) McGuire of Woodbury, MN; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas and Alice; and siblings: Charles McGuire and Mary Edwards.

John graduated from the University of Minnesota and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A resident of Ottumwa since 1953, he worked for 39 years at John Deere Ottumwa works as a design engineer, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation where he had served on Parish Council and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #888. He had been a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, served on the Ottumwa Transit Authority Board, was a member of Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties Auxiliary and was a Hospice volunteer.

He is survived by 11 children, Mary Jo (John) Knight of Ottumwa, John “Jack” (Kathy) Hennen of St. Paul, MN, Michael (Aimee) Hennen of Novinger, MO, Anne (Randy) Clabaugh of Independence, MN, Theresa Holifield of Winnebago, IL, Barbara Bray of West Des Moines, Kathryn Denefe of Austin, TX, Susan (Carlos) Ruiz of St. Paul, MN, Nancy Hennen of Evry, France, David (Erin) Hennen of Lebanon, KY and Fr. Thomas Hennen of Davenport; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings: Marilyn Mahoney, Lois Johnson, Lynette Cox, Ed Hennen, Stan Hennen, and Peg Schwendeman.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica; 2 brothers, Roger Hennen and Richard Hennen; 2 sons-in-law Dan Denefe and Barry Holifield.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2019 at St.Mary of the Visitation with Fr. Thom Hennen and Fr. James Betzen C.PP.S. concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Reece Funeral Home. A Christian Wake service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28th followed by a family visitation until 6 p.m. Sunday.
