Memorials may be made to the Ada Osterholz Memorial Fund. Ada was born on January 3, 1919 in Potosi Township, the daughter of William and Cecelia (Holzer) Pennekamp. She was united in marriage to Donald Osterholz on July 2, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. He preceded her in death on September 8, 2001. Ada and Don farmed together in the Platteville area for 27 years. After retiring from farming, Ada became a child care provider. Ada was a very faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville, where she was a member of the CCW and the Ministry of Praise group. Ada also was a member of the Christopher Splinter Ladies of the Auxiliary Post. She enjoyed playing bingo, especially going on the Bingo bus, embroidery, and visiting the senior center when she was able. She also enjoyed her time spent on the bench at Piggly Wiggly where she’d have the opportunity to visit with those coming and going. Ada is survived by three children, Dale (Louise) Osterholz, Rita Osterholz, and Diane Obershaw; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Osterholz; eight grandchildren, Jeff Krause, Mike (Kacy) Krause, Jennifer (Jeff) Ring, Debbie (Jody) Gilligan, Chris (Cate) Osterholz, Amanda Obershaw, Molly (Jeremy) Donar, and Heather (fiance, Riley Speed) Obershaw; 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson due in April; brother, Ralph (Sally) Pennekamp; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; son, Marv; son-in-law, Dave Obershaw; great-grandson, Mitchel Krause; nine siblings; and many brothers and sisters-in-law. |

Her step-father was Cletus Eckert. She adored her six siblings and cherished spending time with them. Ruth was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, traveling, and playing cards. Besides being a member of both St. Peter’s parish and St. Philomena’s parish, she was a member of The Rosary Society and Pleasant View Homemakers. She was extremely proud of her thirteen children and enjoyed their numerous phone calls and visits. Ruth was a 1947 graduate of St. Joseph Academy in Dubuque, IA. She met Joseph L. Klein in 1947 and they married on November 10, 1948 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kieler, WI. Together she and Joe farmed in the Belmont area with a wonderful family of three daughters and ten sons. She believed in the importance of an education, whether it be college, vocational school, or the school of life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, on March 14, 1990; her father, Joe; mother, Lydia; step-father, Cletus; brothers, Bernard and LaVerne. The loss of her grandson, Peter, and son, Don, were extremely difficult for her to deal with. Her faith gave her strength to accept such tremendous loss. He was born October 27, 1940, in Adrian, to Willian J. and Pearl (Peterson) Rupp. Bill graduated from Adrian High School in 1958. He served his country in the United States Air Guard. Bill married Carol Sieve on May 3, 1969, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Wilmont. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Adrian. They lived in Adrian all of their married lives. Along with his father, Bill owned & operated William J. Rupp & Son Trucking. He took over the business in 1969 and it continued as Rupp Trucking. In 2005, he retired and began driving for Mark Bullerman. He was a member of St. Adrian Catholic Church; and the Knights of Columbus. Bill enjoyed fishing, traveling and driving truck. He especially loved his family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Bill is survived by his wife, Carol Rupp, Adrian; six children, Tammy (Troy) Loosbrock, Adrian; Tracy (Evan Charney) Rupp, Durham, NC; Troy (fiancée, Becky Westrom) Rupp, Ashby; Tim (Melanie) Rupp, Friendswood, TX; Tom (special friend, Lori Wallin) Rupp, Minneapolis; and Travis (Mandi) Rupp, St. Paul; nine grandchildren, Brittany, Nick, Alex & Zack Loosbrock; and Mary, Julia, Jocelyn, Chet & Hank Rupp; and two sisters, Donna Byrne, Ft. Mary was united in marriage to Roy "Red" Messerole on June 1, 1963 at Maryhill Visitation Church. To this union, 4 children were born: Mike, Bill, Tom and Suzy. She taught at Glenwood High School and Breda St. Bernard's before leaving education to raise her four children. Mary returned to work once her children reached school age. Her last employment before retiring was at KLEM radio in Le Mars where she was the receptionist for many years. Mary enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren participate in school activities. She and Roy often traveled to Arizona, California, Colorado, North Carolina and Minnesota to visit their children and grandkids. Mary was an active member of All Saints Parish in Le Mars. She served communion at area nursing homes and also volunteered with Hospice. She was especially interested in supporting organizations that focused on helping youth and women. Mary and Roy were very active in many other civic organizations and worked together as a team. Survivors include: son: Dr. Michael Messerole (Julie) of Omaha, Nebraska, and their children: Anna (Jordan) Eslick; Adam (Becca) Messerole and their daughter Stella. Son: Bill Messerole (Devon) of Creston, Iowa; her children Quin Leith (Lacey) and their children Hudson, Miles and Carver; Zachary Leith (Sarah) and their children Oliver and Scout; Gavin Leith (Lauren); Cameron Leith. Roy John Messerole was born November 1, 1937 in Cherokee, Iowa, the son of Gordon and Gertrude (Pitts) Messerole. He was baptized and confirmed at Maryhill Visitation Church, rural Cherokee, Iowa. He attended grade school at Maryhill and later high school at Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Cherokee. Following high school, he attended Westmar College in Le Mars where he received B.A. in Education. Red began his career in education as a teacher and coach in Akron, Bishop Heelan, and later Paullina. During this time, he furthered his education at the University of South Dakota where he received his Master’s degree in Education administration. He then became the principal in Wall Lake, Iowa and later in Alta, Iowa. Red received his Specialist’s degree from U.S.D. He then became superintendent for Crestland-Early and later BCL-Conrad school district. In 1985, he became the superintendent for Le Mars Community School District. While serving in Le Mars, he was instrumental in establishing the Le Mars Community School District Foundation. Red retired from Le Mars Community in 2000. The following year, he served as interim superintendent for Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn School district. After officially retiring, Red taught driver’s education for South O’Brien School District for several years and supervised student teachers for Buena Vista University. Red was united in marriage to Mary Rupp on June 1, 1963 at Maryhill Visitation Church. To this union, 4 children were born: Mike, Bill, Tom, and Suzy. Red was a member of All Saints Parish in Le Mars and 4th Degree Member of the Michael J. McGivney Council #3088 of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Lion’s Club in Le Mars where he had served as president. He was also a member of the Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce where he received the distinguished honor of being awarded the “Citizen of the Year” in 1997. While serving as superintendent, he was awarded “Superintendent of the Year” from the Area Education Association. Red loved watching all students participate in their activities. He enjoyed attending the Drake Relays in Des Moines for many years. In his younger years, Red was a basketball official and baseball umpire. Through the years, he enjoyed golfing and watching the Minnesota Vikings. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Hazel was born in Cherokee, Iowa, on April 17, 1914, to Thomas and Mary (King) Flanigan, who both preceded her in death. She lived her entire life in and around Marcus. On March 26, 1939, she married Lawrence Rupp, who was also from Cherokee. They eventually moved to Marcus, where they farmed for many years. In 1973, they moved into the town of Marcus. She enjoyed needlework and quilting. She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church Guild, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the Missionary Society at Holy Name, and the Marcus Garden Club. She created award- -winning floral arrangements using flowers from her own garden. She is survived by her 11 children, Mark and Cindy Rupp of Marcus, Galen and Sharon Rupp of Marcus, Ronnie and Shirley Rupp of Bentonville, Keith and Barbara Rupp of Lincoln, Jeanene and Don Schaefer of Omaha, Bonnie and Keith Bratcher of Wheatland, Linda and Keith Finkral of Lambertville, N.J., Dianne and Harold Klassen of Marcus, Jackie and Gary Smitson of St. Pete's Beach, Karen and Kelly Sieckmeyer of Lincoln, and Cindy and John Fristik of Stillwater, 14 grandchildren; 34 great -grandchildren; one brother, Harold Flanigan of St. Paul, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; a sister, Ruth Streeter; a brother, Earl Flanigan; and a granddaughter, Melissa Holton. |

She taught country school until her marriage. She married Raymond Rupp on March 5, 1935, in Maryhill, Iowa. The couple farmed west of Cherokee until retiring to Cherokee in 1973. They spent winters in Harlingen, Texas, and their summers in Ottertail, Minn. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1999. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed spending time with her family, oil painting, cards, crocheting, sewing and fishing. She then attended MBT Business College in Sioux City, Iowa. After college, she worked for Nelson Hatchery from 1952-1957. On June 17, 1957, Joanne was united in marriage to Duane Hackett at Holy Name Catholic Church. To this union two children were born, Renee Mary and Kenneth Duane. Following their marriage, they lived in several communities before moving to Algona, IA in 1968. In January of 1979, they moved to Lorimor, IA where they farmed for many years. Joanne had many hobbies that she enjoyed. She was a master gardener and was known for her flower and vegetable gardens. She enjoyed quilting blankets for her family, crocheting afghans for her family and friends, and knitting sweaters for her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook and baker who enjoyed hosting family. Most of all, Joanne enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends. On February 4, 2019, Joanne passed away at the Golden Living Center in Plattsmouth, NE at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Dorothy Weber; husband, Duane Hackett; and one brother, Paul Weber. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Renee Graaf of Humboldt, IA, and Kenneth Hackett of Omaha, NE; grandchildren: Christine (Bryan) Redemske and their children, Jack and Madelyn, Sarah (Jeremy) Shields, and their daughters, Paige and Emma, Matt (Liz) Graaf and their daughters, Lucy, Carly, and Mia, Emily Hackett, and Mary Kate Hackett; she is also survived by several nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends. |

Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee is in charge of arrangements. Gladys Martha Rupp was born August 5, 1920 in Holstein, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest and Hilda (Schliinz) Kuhrts. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class in Quimby, Iowa in 1937 and attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City. She was employed at the AAA office in Cherokee until her marriage to Robert Rupp on Aug. 20, 1946, which was also the date his parents were married in 1912. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2001. They farmed near Maryhill, Iowa on the home place, a Century Farm, where they retired in 1982 but continued to live until Robert passed away. She was a member of the Maryhill Visitation Parish for more than 50 years where she had served in many leadership capacities, including holding offices in the Maryhill Guild; Secretary of the Finance Committee and eight years and played piano for Mass until Dec. 18, 2004, when they had their last Saturday night Mass at Maryhill. She was also past president and vice-president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Cleghorn; received the 1978 Homemaker of the Year Award; was given her 20 year pin as a 4-H leader of the Sheridan Stars 4-H Club; and received and honorary 4-H member plaque award in 1989. In 2007, she was awarded the Cherokee County Hall of Fame Award in appreciation of her outstanding volunteer services and leadership. Gladys enjoyed reading, traveling, playing the piano, playing cards and was proud of her family. In addition to her husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Earl and Loren Kuhrts and a granddaughter Amy Emmert. Gladys was a faithful, dutiful, loving wife and mother who always saw the best in people and never stopped supporting or giving people a second chance. She always encouraged those around her to be better people and was never idle. She will be remembered for her constant warm smile. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice. Left to cherish her memory is her four children and their spouses: Beverly and Arlan Emmert of Abu Dubai, UAE.
