DateLocationDescription
Martin was the elder of two children of Jean Martin Sutter (1767-1804) of Lobsann, Alsace, and Madeleine Clor (or Glor) (1772-1837) of Keffenach, Alsace. He had a younger brother Michel (1801-1838). On 18 January 1820 in Keffenach, Martin married Catherine Schaaf (1797-after 1880), eldest child of Jean Georges and Marie Salome Reichart Schaaf of Keffenach. Martin was a "shepherd in the village," according to town records. Martin and Catherine had two sons the elder of whom, Michel, died in infancy in 1820 and the younger of whom, Martin, later emigrated with his parents and his own family to to America, arriving in New York on 10 Janusry 1852 on the ship Rhine from Le Havre and settling in New York State. They first lived in Orangeville, Wyoming County, but by 1870 were in Batavia, where they remained, farming.

The 1880 census in Batavia finds Martin and Catherine ages 80 and 81, living on the farm with their two youngest grandchildren, whose parents have both died and whose siblings have married and moved away. The New York State Death Index lists Martin's death as having occurred on 4 August 1882 in Windham, Greene County NY (originally recorded as occurring in Batavia).

DateLocationDescription
Catherine was the eldest of five children of Jean Georges Schaaf (1769-1839) and Marie Salome Reichart (1772-1844), both of Keffenach. Three emigrated to the U.S. - Catherine, Joseph Georges, and Jean Georges. Joseph settled in Buffalo, NY and Catherine in Batavia, NY. Joseph was the first to emigrate, arriving in 1836. Catherine Schaaf Sutter and their son Martin were next, immigrating in January, 1852. Jean Georges came over about 1854. Her brothers' descendants spell their surname Schaff.

Catherine's birth occurred three days after the Coup when the French Directory seized power from the Royalists - an exciting (and dangerous) time to be born. On Jan. 18, 1820, in Keffenach, she married Martin Sutter (1799-1882), who was also from Keffenach and whose occupation was mason. The couple had two sons. Their firstborn, Michel, died in infancy in July 1820. Their second son, Martin (b. in 1822) emigrated with them to New York in 1852, together with his wife Anne Marie Meder and their two young children, Madeleine (age 9) and Georges (age 5). They traveled from Le Havre to New York City in the ship Rhine, arriving on 10 Jan. 1852. On the ship's passenger manifest, she is called Catherine Schaaf.

The census of 1860 finds the family in Orangeville, Wyoming County, NY: Catherine and her husband live with their son and his family. Their granddaughter Madeleine is called Ellen and there are two more children - Caroline (7) and Martin (3). Son Martin is a farmer and his father is listed as "F.L.," a farm laborer. By 1870, they are in Batavia, New York, about 20 miles from Orangeville, where they remained. One more child, daughter Mary (9) has joined the household. Son Martin is farming and no occupation is listed for his parents.

The 1880 census for Batavia is the last document in which we find Catherine and her husband Martin. In a household headed by Anthony "Bruchel" (Brach?) age 71, who is listed as "father-in-law," we find Martin Sutter, age 81, Catherine (age 83), their granddaughter Mary (Manning), age 19, and their grandson Martin age 22, who is working as a laborer. (It appears that the name of Anthony "Bruchel" (Brach?) may belong to the household listed just above that of the Sutters.) It also appears that their son Martin and his wife Anne Marie have both died before 1880 (Mary Meder Sutter died in November 1879), as their two youngest children (Mary and Martin) live with their grandparents at this time. The New York Death Index records the grandfather Martin Sutter's death as 4 Aug. 1882. Catherine's own death record has not yet been located.
