Birth5 March 1851John F. Clingenpeel was born on 5 March 1851 at Decatur, Indiana.
He was the son of Andrew Clingenpeel and Mildred Ann Gentry.
Marriage15 October 1877John F. Clingenpeel married Martha R. Spyker, daughter of Henry Spyker and Susanna T. Davis, on 15 October 1877 at Kinmundy, Marion, Illinois.1
Death2 July 1920John F. Clingenpeel died on 2 July 1920 at Oregon at age 69 John F. Clingenpeel was born March 5, 1851 in Decatur County, Ind., and passed to his reward July 2, 1920, at Delphos Kansas, at the age of 69 years, three months and 27 days. At 20 years of age he came to Kansas, settling on a farm with his parents southwest of Delphos six miles, where they resided till in 1876, when the family returned east, locating at Kinmundy, Ill., where he met and married Miss Mattie R. Spiker, Oct. 16, 1877, returning to Kansas in 1878 where they have resided for the past 42 years, near Delphos. Two sons were born, and together with the wife and mother attended him in his last illness. The sons are Raymond and Elroy, both of Delphos. He leaves in addition, one grandchild, Madeline Clingenpeel, and three brothers, W.E., of Roseburg, Oregon; Lorenzo D., of Delphos, and Chas. T., of Santa Maria, California. Mr. Clingenpeel was an honest, hard-working citizen who did his duty quietly and without the blare of trumpets. By honest toil and capable management he and his good wife bought and paid for a valuable farm and had helped their sons start in life. On Monday, June 28th, he was stricken with apoplexy and was found near his barn where he had been about his evening chores and was carried home unconscious, in which condition he remained til his death four days later. Some years ago he made a profession of religion and though he never saw fit to unite with the church he both attended and supported its work. Counted by words he would not stand out among the great, but counted by a steady, faithful, honest, quiet life he was a success. He sought no man's silver or gold without due return and his deeds of kindness were done without show or prompt. In him a good man is gone. A good husband and father and a citizen the life of which the country needs more. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Delphos Sunday afternoon, July 4th, assisted by G.S. Smith and Dr. E.H. Parkinson. Burial was in the Delphos Cemetery. From the Delphos Republican.

Life EventDateDescription
BirthNovember 1879Raymond Daniel Clingenpeel was born in November 1879 at Illinois.
He was the son of John F. Clingenpeel and Martha R. Spyker.
UNMARRIED1930As of 1930, Raymond Daniel Clingenpeel was never married.
Death27 May 1932He died on 27 May 1932 at Delphos, Kansas, at age 52 Raymond CLINGENPEEL, nephew of the late T.M. SPYKER, a former resident of this community, died at his home in Delphos, Kansas on May 27.
---------------
Daniel Raymond Clingenpeel was born in Decatur County, Illinois, November 24, 1879, to John F. and Martha R. Clingenpeel.

When Raymond and Elroy, the two sons, were infants, the family moved to Kansas, settling near Ada. After several years they moved to the Delphos neighborhood, to which community they have been known ever since.

Mr. Clingenpeel was a farmer but after his death on July 2nd 1920, Mrs. Clingenpeel and son Raymond settled in Delphos. Mrs. Martha Clingenpeel preceded her son in death in June, 1927. Raymond occupied the place until his death May 27, 1932.

The past twenty-five years he had not enjoyed good health. He made several trips to Colorado and Missouri in the interest of his health. He was taken to his bed Tuesday, May 10, and from that date failed rapidly until his death Friday, May 27.

He is survived by his brother, H. Elroy Clingenpeel, of Chapman, Kansas; an uncle, L.D. Clingenpeel, of Delphos; a niece, Madeline Clingenpeel, Chapman, Kansas; three aunts by marriage; a number of cousins and many friends.

Raymond never joined any church, but was a firm believer in and adherent to the gospel of salvation thru Jesus Christ. He as a faithful attendant and supporter of the Methodist Sunday School and church, and was a close student of the Bible and other religious literature. He was an honorary member of the Missionary Society of the Methodist Church and contributed to its causes.

Raymond was quiet and retiring by nature, never caring for show or popularity. People of Delphos knew him as a friend. He sought few amusements, and delighted in the services of Sunday School and church.

An unassuming member of our fellowship has left our midst. Again we realize that the quieter ones of our number fill a greater place in our hearts than we recognize while they are with us. He will be missed by a great number of friends in Delphos and the surrounding community.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. E.J. Vaughan, who was assisted by Rev. Paul J. Vielguth. Burial was made in the Delphos Cemetery.

Birth9 April 1843Mary Spyker was born on 9 April 1843 at Jefferson, Pennsylvania.
She was the daughter of Joel Spyker and Mary Wenger.
Marriage1861Mary Spyker married Thomas Sylvester Edmonds in 1861.
Death25 October 1907Mary Spyker died on 25 October 1907 at Rose, Jefferson, Pennsylvania, at age 64 Mary EDMONDS, nee SPYKER, departed this life October 25, 1907 at her home in Rose Township. She was born near Brookville, Jefferson County on April 9, 1843, being 64 years, 6 months and 16 days old at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Joel and Mary SPYKER and a sister of Abner SPYKER, deceased, and the Mrs. Henry ALLSHOUSE, the last surviving member in a family of ten children. In 1861, she was united in marriage to Thomas EDMONDS. To them were born eight children, seven of whom with her husband survive. The surviving children are:
1. Mrs. G.G. LUCAS, Sigel
2. J.S. EDMONDS, Stuebenville, Ohio
3. Mrs. Albert BROSIUS, Brookville
4. Mrs. D.W. JOHNS, Butler
5. Mrs. J.S. SWAB, Falls Creek
6. Myrtle E., at home
7. Roland, at home
All of these children were present at the funeral. She also leaves ten grandchildren.
In early life she united with the Lutheran Church, and as her health would permit, was faithful to its services and requirements.
She was an affectionate wife, a kind mother and good neighbor. Although she had a large family of her own to care for, her household cares were never so numerous to keep her from administering to the sick and dying of the neighborhood in which she lived. She was ever ready and willing to help
those in distress. No disease was so contagious to keep her from her duty.
About two years ago, she was stricken with paralysis, yet she bore her suffering patiently until the final summons came. She has gone to receive the glad welcome. "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord." She was laid to rest on Sabbath afternoon in St. John's Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. FREY, pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church in Brookville. Source: Jeffersonian Democrat, October 31, 1907.

Excerpt from Pennsylvania-German Society Publications, Volume 22:
Another Pennsylvania-German schoolmaster who settled in Maryland and took an active part in affairs was Benjamin Spyker, Jr., a son of Peter Spyker, president judge of the courts of Berks county, Pennsylvania. He was born in Berks county in 1747 and was given an unusually good education for those times. Shortly after reaching his majority he went to Sharpsburg, Maryland, which had been laid out about five years before to become the schoolmaster of the German Reformed congregation of that place. Steps were immediately taken to build a schoolhouse, and in 1769, by means of a lottery, the sum of six hundred dollars was raised for this purpose and for completing the church. The managers for this lottery were George Strecher, Christian Orndorff, Joseph Smith, William Good, Abraham Lingenfelder, John Stull, Michael Fockler, George Dyson, and Benjamin Spyker. At the outbreak of the Revolution Spyker raised a company and served as captain in the Flying Camp and later in the Maryland Line.

History of Berks County in the Revolution 1774-1783 - Spyker, Henry
Excerpt from "Notes and Queries: Historical, Biographical and Genealogical":
Perhaps the best known of any member of the Spyker family was Colonel Henry Spyker of the Revolution He was the sixth child of Judge Peter. At the early age of 23 years he was in 1776 Adjutant of Col Patton's regiment of Pennsylvania militia, and was on duty in New Jersey, when he heard, as he records in his journal thunder, of battle. He was afterwards colonel of the Sixth battalion. On August 26, 1777, he was commissioned paymaster of the Berks county militia, a position which he occupied until July 27, 1785. During this time his services to the State were simply invaluable. Amid the clamoring of the poorly paid troops he was compelled to exhaust every means of procuring the necessary funds, sometimes supplying the money from his own individual resources. His receipt book covering this long period is a model of neatness and correctness. He expended (British Pounds) 122,847 7s 6d (over $614,235) and accounted accurately for every penny. At the close of the Revolution he engaged in the mercantile business in his native place, besides taking a deep interest in public affairs. In 1784 Mr Spyker was elected to the State Legislature, a position which he filled for three successive terms. In 1795 he erected the first brick house in the newly laid out town of Lewisburg. In 1797 he closed out his interests in Berks county and removed to Lewisburg, then in Northumberland, now in Union county, and the county seat, ten miles above Sunlxiry on the Susquehanna River. At Lewisburg he again engaged in the mercantile business. Soon after his removal to this place he was commissioned a justice of the peace in which capacity he did a vast amount of business until the period of his death, which occurred on July 1, 1817. His wife Maria Weiser Spyker born 1754 died October 11, 1829. Both are buried at Lewisburg where their graves may be seen in the cemetery. They left a number of children.

27 March 1897On 27 March 1897 Col. Henry Spyker of Berks County. Henry Spyker was a son of Peter Spyker, who was president of the courts of Berks county in 1780. The Spykers came over with the family of Conrad Weiser to New York in 1710, from Germany. In 1729 they all removed to Tulpehocken and settled. There Henry, the subject of this notice, was born, August 29, 1753. Soon after reaching manhood he became identified with the party which favored the independence of the colonies and in 1776 was appointed adjutant of Lieut. Col. John Patton's Berks county Battalion of foot and in active service in the Jerseys during that year. In 1778 he was colonel of the Sixth Battalion, Berks county militia, and was subsequently until July, 1785, paymaster of the militia, during which time he disbursed 122,647 pounds, 7s, 6d and accounted for every cent. He was afterwards a member of Assembly for Berks county from 1788 to 1790. In 1797 Henry Spyker removed to what is now Lewisburg, Union county, Pa., and engaged in storekeeping for a few years. He was then appointed Justice of the Peace and he filled the office till within a few days of his death, which occurred July 1, 1817. He left several children and their descendants still live at or near Lewisburg. Henry Spyker was a man of careful and methodical business habits and his integrity was of the highest order. He left a manuscript journal containing a record of his life written in German, which is said to be in the possession of a granddaughter - Mary Spyker, of Lewisburg - together with many valuable papers, and a complete file of Almanacs from 1756 to the close of his life. His family Bible, a rare edition, is also said to be in the collection. Those who have examined these ancient papers say they are voluminous and of great value to State and local historians.
