Edna loved sports from childhood playing field hockey and baseball in high school. Later she became an avid bridge player golfer and would never miss watching game with Michael Jordan. She always had a great love of education and books. In order to be able to attend high school and the university, she lived and worked in other families' homes, many times, reading to them. She believed everyone should read great prose and poetry. In her beautiful handwriting, she wrote poetry in both English and German, which she would speak at every opportunity. She connected with young people and delighted in engaging them in conversation. Her favorite job was at the University of Wisconsin in the economics department, where she was surrounded by students. She was a woman with moxie. She was direct and humorous whether it be playing cards with her grandchildren or talking with graduate students. She is survived by three sons, Jack Haugsland (Jane) of Dallas, Texas, James Haugsland (Judy) of Bayside, and Joseph Haugsland (Joanne) of Deephaven, Minn; and two daughters, Mary Schmitz (John) and Dianne Cieslewicz (Dave), both of Madison. She had nine grandchildren, Brad, Julie, Jim, Jill, Jessica, Kristine, Heidi, Katie and Andrew. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Frieda Friede, Doris Widen and Betty Plath. Funeral services will be held at the JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, Madison on Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. The Rev. A. L. Braunschweig will officiate, with burial in Sunset Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Monday Nov. 1, 2004, at the funeral home until the service time.
