Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013 at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., where there will be a prayer service at 3 p.m.

Gen was born October 26, 1919, in Jamestown Township, WI, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Kaiser) Oyen. She married Raymond P. Klaas, contractor and owner of Klaas Construction on May 6, 1952. Her step-son, Msgr. Raymond E. Klaas, performed the ceremony at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kieler, Wis. They lived in Louisburg, Wis. initially and moved to Dubuque in 1960 after his injury in a construction accident in Belmont, Wis. on Nov. 15, 1957. He preceded her in death on April 2, 1979.

Gen was a homemaker. She was an active member of Holy Trinity parish, including the Altar Society and Funeral Choir, and a member of St. Francis Sewing Circle over 25 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane (Michael) Pitzen, of rural Cuba City, Wis;three grandchildren, Terrence Pitzen, of Alexandria, LA, Lynn (Mathew) Weber, of Richfield, MN, and Leslie Pitzen, of Mesa, AZ; two great-grandchildren, Marek Weber and Amina Weber; three step-daughters, Eileen Schaefer, of Potosi, Wis., Loretta Duggan, of Platteville, Wis., and Jane (Jim) Flogel, of Dubuque; step-daughters-in-law, Jean Klaas, of Dubuque, Judy Klaas, of Galesburg, IL, and Jeanette Klaas, of Platteville, Wis; three sisters-in-law, Judea Klaas, of Ellsworth, Wis., Elsie Beitzel, of Dickeyville, Wis., and Eileen Oyen, of Lady Lake, FL; numerous nieces, nephews, and step-grandchildren including Jim (Deb) Flogel, Steve (Sue) Flogel, Tom (Alison) Flogel, all of Dubuque, and Jill (Buddy) Springate, of Wilmore, KY, and numerous step-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, ten siblings, Peter Oyen, Joe Oyen, Martin Oyen, Leonard Oyen, Alfred Oyen, Melvin Oyen, Leah Greenhill, Maurinus Oyen, Virgil Oyen, and Mary Berning; and eight step-children, Urban Klaas, Merlin Klaas, Mary Muller, Msgr. Raymond Klaas, Robert Klaas, Herbert Klaas, Ken Klaas, and John Klaas.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6th, 2019 at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be at 3:45 p.m.

Marie was born on January 29, 1927 in Potosi, WI, daughter of Charles and Martha (Schmitz) Abing. She married Harold Kalmes on November 4,1947. He preceded her in death on December 14,1968. She married Julian “Jukes” Herrig on October 17, 1981. He preceded her in death on April 23, 1996.

Marie worked at both National Tea grocery stores in Dubuque where she was in charge of the fruit and vegetable display as well as the customer checkout. She met her husband Harold Kalmes while working at National Tea. They married and lived in St. Donatus while raising 8 children. Harold and Marie managed the Kalmes Store from 1948 to 1953. After Harold was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 1968, Marie continued to live in St. Donatus and successfully raised their children on her own.

After living in St. Donatus for more than 50 years, Marie moved to Dubuque in 2002. Marie volunteered her time sewing quilts for St. Luke’s Church. Marie loved to sew, crochet and quilt. She made many items over the years and provided each grandchild and great grandchild with a hand-made baby blanket. Marie enjoyed games especially Scrabble and Canasta. In recent years she kept busy embroidering special items for friends and family. Marie is best known for her humor and the ability to make every person she encountered feel special. She was remarkably strong despite the tough challenges she faced in her life. She always made others laugh, even in her last days.

Those who will honor Marie's memory include her children, Gary Kalmes, of Richmond, VA, Darrell (Diane) Kalmes, of Dubuque, Mary Jean (Steve) Sieverding, of St. Donatus, Doug (special friend Crystal) Kalmes, of Carbon Cliff, IL, Greg (Jeanie) Kalmes, of St. Donatus, Steve (Dee) Kalmes, of Springville, IA, Beth (Jeff) Kaiser, of Dubuque and Denise Kalmes, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren; her sister’s Irene Seng, of Potosi, Luella Brandt, of Kieler, Bettty (Jim) Jungk, of Dubuque, Doris (Bernard) Hentrich, of Hazel Green and Margaret (Joe) Hentrich, of Belmont; a brother Irvin (Katie) Abing, of Potosi, brother-in-law Lawrence (Windy) Kalmes, of St. Donatus, sister’s-in-law Paulette Abing, of Potosi, Bernadette (Don) Williams, of Lancaster and Mariella Berthel, of Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Martha Abing; her husband Harold Kalmes; her husband Jukes Herrig; daughter-in-law Rita Kalmes; grandson Scott Sieverding; great-grandson Brecken Woolsey; four brothers, Gerald Abing, Cyril Abing, Leo Abing and Richard Abing, and her sister Berniece Kieler.

Irene was born January 25, 1928, in Potosi to Charles and Martha Schmitz Abing. She graduated from St. Andrew High School in Tennyson, WI. She married Clarence Seng on October 22, 1946, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson. They loved their occupation of farming.
Irene’s life was centered on her faith, family, and friends. She was a devoted Catholic who led the rosary for many years at church. At the age of 93, she began a rosary group who prayed weekly at her home. She also lived her faith by being a member of the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as well as overseeing funeral dinners for many years. Clarence and Irene were also part of a church study group that met in the homes of their members. They were known for their generosity helping others in need and she continued that until the last weeks of her life. In the community, she was a 4-H Leader and a Grant County Fair Board Member.
Her family was blessed by the countless support she gave them by babysitting, preparing their favorite meals, and by her prayer support. Through her many talents, she was able to provide clothing, quilts, and crafts she sewed to her family and friends. She was a totally selfless person who always put the needs of others ahead of her own.
Friends were also key components in her life, whether it was bowling, playing cards, or traveling together, those were memories she always treasured.
Irene is survived by her four children: Brenda Brandt, Onalaska, WI, Terry (Cheryl) Seng, Platteville, WI, Lisa ( Mark Brehmer, friend) Meyer, Dubuque, IA, and Neil (Becky Harrison, friend) Seng, Potosi, WI; her grandchildren: Angela (Chad) Erdenberger, Alissa (Steve) Roob, Andria (Phil) Snyder, Crystal Seng, Nick (Rachael) Seng, Matt (Maggi) Meyer, April (Travis) Lemmon, Jodi (Jerimiah) White, Stephen (Sarah) Seng, Jeanna Johnson, Kevin Seng, and David Seng; twelve great-grandchildren; her siblings: Luella Brant, Betty (Jim) Junk, Doris (Bernard) Hentrich, Margaret (Joe) Hentrich and Irvin (Katie) Abing; and her in-laws: Bernadette Williams and Paulette Abing.
Irene is preceded in death by her loving husband, Clarence; her parents; a son-in-law: Dennis Brandt; siblings: Gerald, Marie, Berniece, Leo, Cyril, and Richard; and several in-laws.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson, WI, with Father Richard Leffler officiating. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery, Potosi, WI. Family and friends may call on Friday, August 6, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 2:45 p.m. Friends may also call on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.

30 October 2011On 30 October 2011 Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Seng of Potosi will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a family get together on Sunday, Oct. 30. Clarence Seng and Irene Abing, both of Potosi, were married at St. Andrew Church in Tennyson on Oct. 22, 1946. Their children are Brenda (Dennis) Brandt of Onalaska, Terry (Joyce) Seng of Platteville, Lisa (Gary) Meyer of Dubuque, and Neil Seng of Potosi. They also have 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Betty was born July 15, 1933 in Tennyson, WI, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Schmitz) Abing. She married James R. Jungk on July 7, 1953 in Tennyson, WI.

Betty was devoted to her family and friends. She adored each of her brides as personal consultant of her self-owned wedding invitation business, which was open for 50 years. She was an avid hunter whose happiest place was in the woods of Wisconsin and Iowa. She enjoyed travel, playing bingo, assembling puzzles online, watching game shows and reality TV. Betty was active in countless organizations and the community of Hope Church. At 89, she was deeply loved as a local celebrity and the Queen of Facebook. She recently published her first book, an autobiography, “Stories Still Told by Nana Betty” and was working on its sequel everyday until her last.

Betty is survived by her husband James, of Dubuque; her daughter, Linda (Paul “Buck”) Farni, of Durango, IA; her granddaughter, Julie (Scott) Sabers, of Dubuque; four great-grandchildren, Quinn, Kaleigha, Keegan, and Addison Spahn; her siblings, Luella Brant, of Kieler, WI, Irvin (Katie) Abing, of Potosi, WI, Doris (Bernard) Hentrich, of Cuba City, WI, and Margaret (Joe) Hentrich, of Belmont, WI; and her sisters-in-law, Paulette Abing, of Potosi, WI, and Bernadette Williams, of Lancaster, WI.

On October 10, 1951, Florentine was united in marriage to Cyril Abing at St. Andrews Catholic Church, Tennyson. Together they farmed in Grant County. In 1965, they moved to the family farm south of Lancaster and they raised ten children. She enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, crocheting and vacationing with family and friends. On September 9, 1989, Florentine married her soul mate, Dan Joyce, at St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster. They continued to enjoy life to the fullest with fishing, card playing, playing Scrabble and many more vacations.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Joyce, Lancaster; her children: Mary Kay (Jim Breuer) Abing, Cassville; Peggy (David) Sturmer, Lancaster; Randy (Jane) Abing, Brodhead; Ron (Terri) Abing, Lancaster; Chuck (Kim) Abing, Lancaster; Keith (Lisa) Abing, Appleton; Kevin Abing, Neenah; Ellen (Randy Zippy) Koeller, Lancaster; Marty (Jenn) Abing, Neenah; Kurt Abing, Fennimore; twenty grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and more on the way; Dans children: Rachael Parks, Humble, TX; Fran Joyce, Platteville; Tom Joyce, LaCrosse; Angela Joyce, Rochester, MN; Jerry Joyce, Platteville; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Jeanette (Sylvester Sid) Sedbrook, LaCrosse; Francis (Donna Mae) Wallenhorst, Coon Rapids, MN; Pat (friend Gib Key) Heer, Prairie du Chien; Edna (LeRoy) Abresch, St. Catherine, IA; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In addition to her parents, Florentine was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Abing on September 26, 1986.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Friday, January 22, 2010, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Florentine Abing-Joyce memorial fund has been established. Schwartz Funeral Home assisted the family.

She was born on June 27, 1934, near Potosi, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harry Abing and Lillian Hufnagel. She married Joseph Friederick on January 8, 1955 who survives her. Mary excelled as a gardener, book reader, cook, seamstress, and story teller. Some of her many enjoyments included watching sunrises, entertaining for large groups, hearing children's laughter, and enjoying good humor. Mary enjoyed being a member of the Grant County Master Gardeners, St. Clement School, Parish and choir, Lancaster Garden Club, Red Hatters, and numerous card clubs. She served on the FmHA County Committee, 4-H Adult Leader Association and President of the Grant County Chapter of Wisconsin Women for Agriculture. From 1960 until 2001, Mary was instrumental in the family farming operations.

The pride of her life were her five children, 13 grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, who also survived her. They include David (Lidia) of East Dundee, IL, Keith (Patty) of Lancaster, James (Sherry) of Huntington, WV, Bruce (Sharon) of Lancaster and Andrea (Stuart) Dodds of Chaska, MN. She will be missed dearly by her brothers and sisters, including Vincent (Marilyn) Abing of Platteville, Rosalyn Hartung of Madison, Harriet Snyder of McHenry, IL, Carl (Beth) Abing of Cassville, Karin (Steve) Peacock of Platteville, Al (Jan) Abing of Platteville, and Michael (Kim) Abing of Fennimore. The loves of Mary's life were her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Roshae (Matt), Jana, Danielle (Jeremy), Jamie, Stacy, Tom (Amanda), Dana, Ellen, Claire, Alec, Sam, Jaren, Colden, Morgan, Hunter, Allison, Jenna, and Brady.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother David, her sister Patricia, nephews Craig Abing, Roger Friederick, Paul Snyder, and Dennis Friederick; nieces Sarah and Mary Ann Friederick; brothers-in-law Ralph, Don, and Earl Friederick; Paul Hartung and Richard "Pete" Snyder.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, July 7, 2014, at 10:30 am at ST. CLEMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH in Lancaster, WI, with Father John Sasse officiating. A private family burial was at the St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster, following the fellowship luncheon being served in the church basement. Visitation was from 3:00 - 7:00 pm on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the ST. CLEMENT CATHOLIC CHURCH. Friends also called from 9:30 - 10:30 am Monday at the church in Lancaster. Schwartz Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Lancaster is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, a Mary Friederick Memorial Fund has been established.

Death27 May 2017Ida Mae Reuter died on 27 May 2017 at age 81 Ida Mae Ruth Fure, age 81, of Cassville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Grant Regional Health Center, Lancaster, with one of her sons by her side. She was born on April 29, 1936, in Potosi, the daughter of Lester and Mildred (Pitzen) Reuter. Ida Mae graduated from Potosi High School in 1954. On July 31, 1954, Ida Mae was united in marriage to Clarence J. Fure and they started their family. Together they raised nine children and always enjoyed many family gatherings and visits from her grandchildren. Ida Mae worked for many years at Rapid Die & Molding Company in Cassville. She enjoyed all her co-workers and loved giving them her sarcastic attitude quite often. She enjoyed fishing with her husband, Clarence. Ida Mae also loved the many trips to the casino with her husband and children. She dearly loved all the hugs and time spent with her family. Ida Mae was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. She always had a little twinkle in her eye for Brett Farve and Aaron Rogers.

Survivors include their children: Victoria (Gary) Yunk; Michael (Marcia) Fure; David (Lori) Fure; William Fure, all of Cassville; Lisa (Michael) Rauch, Evansville; Robin (Luke) Demes; Richard "Ernie" (Chrystal) Fure; Michele (Brian) Bierman, all of Cassville; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; twelve siblings; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her parents, Ida Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence on July 17, 2014; a son, Ronald Lee Fure; a daughter-in-law, Rebecca (Rauch) Fure; four brothers, Vincent, Leonard, Dick and Norbert Reuter; two sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Cassville. Family and friends called on Tuesday, May 30, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory, 313 Fredrick, Cassville and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Gabel, age 84, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born May 17, 1924, in Paris Township, the daughter of Elmer and Ethel (Hamilton) Deiter. She attended school in Paris Township. On June 1, 1940, Dorothy was united in marriage to Donald L. Gabel in Dubuque. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Southwest Wisconsin until 1950, when they purchased Gabel’s Salvage. They operated Gabel’s Salvage until 1986. Dorothy began driving school bus in 1966, retiring in 1986, when she moved to Cassville and began to care for families in their home. Dorothy was an avid bowler, quilter, seamstress and enjoyed making crafts. She was known for her dolls, rugs and quilts. Dorothy also enjoyed canning and reading. She had a big heart and was a mother to many, not just her own children. Dorothy was fun-loving and shared that quality with everyone she met. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Forty & Eight, Lion’s Club, DAR, and Christ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her eleven children: Deanna Udelhofen, Lancaster; Judy (Fred) Hutchcroft Moon, Poplar Grove, IL; Patricia Gestner, Milton; Sandra (Gary) Reed, Lansing, MI; Mitchell (Cindy) Gabel, Montezuma, IA; James (Shirley) Gabel, Ft. Collins, CO; Rita (David) Olson Buchholz, Cuba City; Dolly (Denny) Templeton Halvorson, New Glarus; Leane Gabel, Ft. Collins, CO; Tami Gabel, New Glarus; Tim Gabel, Washington, DC; daughter-in-law, Sara Gabel, Lancaster, OH; 41 grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Dolores Ready, Rockford, IL; Daryl (Jo) Deiter, Lafaria, TX; Donna (George) Fair, Rockford, IL; Robert (Rosemary) Deiter, Rantoul, IL; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her son, Bob, and a granddaughter, Marillee Olson.

Funeral services wer held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Lancaster with Pastor David Froemming officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends called on Friday, May 8, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Survivors include Donna's children, Barbara (Steve) Hevrin of Rockford, Duane Barrie of Machesney Park, David (Barb) Barrie of Winnebago, Linda (Jim) Baggett of Rockton and Carol (Jeff) Larson of Loves Park; George's children, Carol (Lon) Mishler of DePere, Wis., Donna (Tyrone) Arneson of Cascade, Wis., Trudy (Murshid) Alam of Arlington, Texas; sister, Dolores Ready of Machesney Park; brothers, Daryl (Jo) Deiter of LaFeria, Texas, and Robert (Rosemary) Deiter of Rantoul; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchild-ren, nieces, nephews and special niece, Judy Moon.
