Life EventDateDescription
Birth21 June 1913Emma S. Wiken was born on 21 June 1913 at South Dakota.
Marriage19 June 1942She married Gordon Elven Larson, son of Joseph Larson and Mary Bergeson, on 19 June 1942 at Las Vegas, Nevada.
Death1 February 1999Emma S. Wiken died on 1 February 1999 at Vermillion, Clay, South Dakota, at age 85 Emma Larson enjoyed taking care of people, whether providing them with a place to live or delivering food to them during a snowstorm. Larson and her husband, Gordon, owned The Cavalier Cafe in Vermillion for 43 years. Their cafe provided jobs for many people, and their home served as a boarding house for college students and others who needed a place to live. "If you lived with us, you also worked at our restaurant," said her daughter, Karen Hattervig of Sioux Falls. "If someone needed a roof over their head, she would let them stay." Emma S. Larson, 85, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center. When the Larsons bought the Cavalier Cafe, it was just a small, nine-stool railroad car diner. Back then, the items on the menu were chili and hamburgers, said her daughter. "Most people who went to USD ate at the Cavalier," said Hattervig. People would come up to me and say, "I went through college eating chili and hamburgers." As the years passed, the restaurant grew larger. Several of the employees worked there for 15 to 20 years. Hattervig said the employees stayed so long because her mom was so nice to work for. "Working there was like being a part of the family," she said. "She was a mom to everybody who ever worked at the Cavalier." Anyone who had ever met her would tell me, "You have the nicest mom." In addition to working at the restaurant, Larson also enjoyed listening to Minnesota Twins games on the radio. Larson was able to take several trips to see games at the Metro-dome in Minneapolis. One special trip was on her 80th birthday. Her daughter called ahead to let Twins' officials know it was Larson's birthday so they would post it on the big screen. "When she saw her name on the screen, she was thrilled," said Hattervig. Emma S. Wiken was born June 21, 1913, in Volin. She graduated from Volin High School in 1930 and from the University of South Dakota in 1940. She married Gordon Larson on June 10, 1942, in Las Vegas. She taught high school English and Latin during the 1940s in Platte and one year at Meckling. After her husband was discharged from the service, they worked at a war plant in Rockford, 111., for one year. They then moved to Vermillion. Her husband died March 17, 1984. She was a member of several honor societies at USD. In addition to her daughter, Karen, survivors include two sons: Darryl of Eugene, Ore., and Quentin of Vermillion; another daughter, Mary Kaye Mollet of Vermillion; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two foster sons: Randy Finwall of Tea and Chris Kaphers of Minneapolis. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with burial in Bluff View Cemetery in Vermillion. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home in Vermillion is in charge of arrangements. June 2, 1961. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1963. In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters: Annie Wagner and Barbara Haviland, both of Sioux Falls; three sons: Edwin of Burnsville, Minn., Duane of Tempe, Ariz., and Chuck of Fort Walton Beach, Fla; seven grandchildren; her mother, Bertha Yates of Chamberlain; two brothers: Roger of Tulsa, Okla., and Robert of Chamberlain; and four sisters: Lois Dobberstein of Victor, Mont., Joyce Loftis of Salem, Ore., Anna Mae Nissan of Reliance, and Bonnie Haugom of Adrian, Minn. Services begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with burial at a later date. A reception will be held immediately after the service. Visitation is 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30.
