Life EventDateDescription
Birth18 June 1931Rita Louise Garvin was born on 18 June 1931 at LeMars, Plymouth, Iowa.
She was the daughter of Mark Edwin Garvin and Elizabeth Frances Heller.
Marriage10 December 1952Rita Louise Garvin married Willis Harold Neustrom on 10 December 1952.
Death5 September 2022Rita Louise Garvin died on 5 September 2022 at age 91 On September 5, Rita Louise Neustrom passed away at the age of 91, in the company of her family at her home in Hamilton.
Rita was born on June 18, 1931 in Le Mars, Iowa, to Mark and Elizabeth Garvin. She grew up in Marcus, Iowa as the oldest sister of four other siblings: Jerry, Marcella, Jean, and Helen. She graduated in 1949 from Holy Name High School and then attended Ellis School of Cosmetology. Through her high school friend, Pat Neustrom, she met her husband and lifelong companion, Will "Woody" Neustrom. They married on December 10, 1952, and had 5 children together; Rita raised them with great love while Will deployed both stateside and abroad as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force. Upon Will's retirement from the armed forces in 1970, they moved their family to Hamilton, Montana, a community which both maintained was irrefutably the most beautiful place they had ever seen. Rita called the Bitterroot "the best kept secret in the world."
Rita was an indispensable part of her beloved community. She was a devout congregant of Saint Francis Parish, a Haven House volunteer, and an award-winning member of the Bitterroot Quilters Guild. She and Will worked together in their various businesses throughout the years, which continue to operate today. More than anything else, Rita was a kind and loving soul, and all those who knew her can recount their own unique stories of her grace. Indeed, she raised 5 children, but she was like a mother to many more. Her famous cooking and her wise advice spoke for that image. Second to her love for her family and community was that of the color purple, rare to see her in public without wearing her signature color.
Rita is preceded in passing by her husband Will Neustrom, her son Bill Neustrom, and her siblings. She is survived by her children: Cindy (Bud) Hartley, Mary Beth (James Walker) Neustrom, Steve (Susan) Neustrom, Jim (Dwight Auch) Neustrom, and daughter in law Sally Neustrom; as well as her many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
As we all grieve her passing, we are comforted in knowing that she went peacefully and without regret. Rita lived a long and full life, and she is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Will. She will have eternal life both in the Lord's Kingdom and in our hearts. At a time such as this, she would remind us that her greatest legacy is the love that we have for our family and our friends; a love that never dies.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 from 4-6 PM at the Daly-Leach Chapel with a Rosary and Vigil Service following. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated the following day at 12 PM at Saint Francis Catholic Church. Internment at Riverview Cemetery will follow, with a reception afterwards at the Parish Center.

Jean, as she was known by her family and friends, was born on October 18, 1938, in LeMars, Iowa to Dr. Paul A. and Mary C. (Heller) Brauch. Jean grew up in LeMars, Iowa attending St. Joseph Grade School and LeMars Central High School. Jean attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri for two years. She then transferred to Iowa State University and graduated in 1961 with a B.S. degree in Home Economics and Textiles & Clothing Merchandising. Upon graduation, she worked as an assistant buyer for Stix Baer and Fuller Department Store in St. Louis, Missouri.

While attending Stephens College she met H. Denis Moore and they married on June 1, 1963 in LeMars, Iowa. Denis was the owner and publisher of the Tri County News and St. Clair Chronicle in Sullivan and St. Clair, Missouri. They settled in Sullivan and lived there for eighteen years. In 1980, Denis and Jean decided to sell the newspapers and in 1982 purchased the Time Plain Dealer in Cresco, Iowa. Jean was active in helping Denis publish the newspaper. They raised two sons and continued to publish the newspaper until selling the business in 1995.

In 1997, tragedy struck and she lost Denis to a heart attack. She continued forward with the support of family and many friends continuing to live in and support the Cresco community.

Jean enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up and celebrating holidays, birthdays, sporting events, and trips with them. The family pets were also the center of attention during these times.

Jean was very active in clubs and volunteering in the communities she lived in. She enjoyed being away from the cold winters of Cresco in her home in Ft. Myers, Florida continuing her passions only in a warmer climate, a dream her and Denis shared up to his death. She had many interests that she actively pursued including golf, bridge, cooking, theatre, fine dining and travel. She achieved one of golf’s major milestones, a “hole in one”, on her birthday, October 18, 1991 taking place on hole #17 at the Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena, IL. Golf was an activity she truly enjoyed and continued to play the game up near her death. Family and friends were important to Jean and she continued to stay in contact with them including her college friends, the “supper club” group in Missouri, her winter friends in Ft. Myers, and the many friends she has made in Cresco community.

Jean is survived by two children, Michael (Heather) Moore, Waxhaw, NC, Mark (Kristina) Moore, Bixby, OK. Two grandchildren, Matthew and Connor Moore, Waxhaw, NC. A brother, Paul Brauch, LeMars, IA.
