Burton Floyd "Needle" Jones was born the second of five children on March 4, 1923, to Owen P. and Margaret A. (Davies) Jones near Cresbard, SD, along with his twin brother, Francis Boyd 'Goose' (who obviously was the third). He attended high school in Cresbard, graduating in 1941. He spent one year at Huron College before enlisting in the US Army Air Corps as a tail-gunner on a B-25. He flew 50 missions and, as he said, "won the war and came back home." He headed off to college at the South Dakota State College in Brookings, graduating with a degree in Journalism/ History. Burt moved to Seattle, WA, and worked his first job in the engineering section at Boeing. It was there he married Corinne Gibson of Redfield, SD. They had six children from the union before Corinne died in 1967. He headed back to South Dakota in 1955, working for the State of South Dakota, first for the Game, Fish & Parks Department and then with the Department of Water and Natural Resources, from where he retired in 1983. He married Betty Norbeck Mathews in 1968, adding two stepchildren, whom he adopted early in the marriage. Burt was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Masons, Golden Kiwanis, SD Historical Society, a lifetime member of both the VFW and the American Legion and was a volunteer at the Discovery Center. He dedicated numerous hours showing and explaining his extensive Indian artifact collection to children and youth alike. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and enjoyed tying up his own lures, as well as tying them up for anyone who wanted them. He was also a bowler, a "Quacker Hacker," a collector of barbed wire and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and putting together jigsaw puzzles, which he passed around to his fellow "puzzlers." He had a zest for life and was truly dedicated to his friends and family. He was at his happiest when surrounded by the people he loved, often regaling them with whimsical stories and a myriad of limericks. While in the service he once went three days without having to buy a round of drinks for the crew by reciting limericks without repeating one that any of the other competitors had said. His mind and wonderful sense of humor remained with him until his last breath. Burt was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Corinne, two daughters, Kim Carol and Janet Lynn Jones, his brothers, John Lyle Jones of Savoy, IL, Francis Boyd Jones of Huron, Leon Arlo Jones of Parkston, and his sister, Marvel Elaine Smith of Gettysburg. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jones, of Pierre; sons Scott (Julia) Jones of Pierre, Stu Jones of Spearfish, Tim (Chris) Jones of Elizabeth, CO; three daughters, Shelley (Mike) Reeder of Pierre, Sue (Rick) Pinney of Las Vegas, NV, Sharon (Todd) Hemmingson of Spearfish. He also leaves nine "real and accumulated" grandchildren: Nathaniel, Brady, Erin, Ryan, Jason, Ryan, Jacob, Tyler and Kaitlyn. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Juanita Jones of Savoy, IL, Charlotte Jones of Huron, and June Jones of Parkston. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly, and many friends who shared his life. He may be gone in body, but Burt will never be forgotten in Spirit.
