Timothy Shaffer came from Ohio to Linn County in 1868. His wife was Catherine Shank. His son Perry married Susan Guynn from Iowa. They were living on the old Blacks farm when the Price raid went through. Samuel Perry Guynn and his brother-in-law, W.K. Evarts of Company E Sixth Kansas Cavalry, were on a visit at the Shaffer home and in uniform. They started about 9 am and at the Fisher farm northwest of Pleasanton met twenty rebels who shot and killed Samuel and stripped his uniform from him and wounded Evarts in his arm, but he escaped. Perry Shaffer's son, Leroy married Lovena Akers and the daughter Pearl married Harley Johnson.

Berniece was born March 12, 1921 in Centertown, Missouri to William and Dora (Shubert) Kiesling.

She graduated from Centertown High School and then attended secretarial school. For many years she worked as a certified nurse aide and medication aide at Sugar Valley Nursing Home in Mound City, Kansas.

On May 3, 1952 she married John Richard Schmitz in Kansas City, Missouri. He preceded her in death in August of 1979. Berniece was also preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Schmitz; one brother, Roy Kiesling; and one sister, Erma Kiesling. Survivors include one son, David Schmitz and his wife Rita of Iola; three grandchildren, Sarah, Justin and Emilee; and two great-grandchildren, Andrea and Jonathan.
A graveside service for Berniece will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Curry Cemetery, Mound City, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until service time at the Schneider Funeral Home and Crematory, Mound City Chapel.
