Name TypeDateDescription
Married Name25 August 1964As of 25 August 1964,her married name was Helbing.
Life EventDateDescription
Birth5 September 1944Janet Margery Blasen was born on 5 September 1944.
Death3 November 2010She died on 3 November 2010 at Bismarck, North Dakota, at age 66 Janet M. Helbing, 66, died Nov. 3, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, followed by a parish rosary/vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the service at the church on Friday.

Janet was born Sept. 5, 1944, to Joseph J. and Helen A. (Ehrlich) Blasen. She was raised and educated in Dubuque, Iowa, attended St. Columbkille School and graduated from Walhert High School. There she met Douglas Helbing and they were married on August 8, 1964.

Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She enjoyed spending time with them, teaching them to cook her famous meatballs and other dishes, and teaching the girls how to sew. With a love for detail, Janet was a master organizer and very artistic. She would spend hours painting wooden ornaments made by Doug for their small business, Wish You Wood.

Her spirituality was evident in her involvement with the Catholic Church. She was very supportive of Doug’s service to the Church as a deacon. She organized two pilgrimages to Fatima and Lourdes and a Eucharistic pilgrimage to EWTN and various shrines and churches in the Midwest. She also served as Director of Religious Education at Christ the King Church. She was instrumental in beginning the Family Formation, Vacation Bible School, Sacred Heart Enthronement, Children’s Eucharistic Adoration, and Family Holy hour programs. Janet organized the two parish missions that took place in November 2007 with Father Bill Gaffaney and this past October with Father Bill Casey. Prior to becoming a member at Christ the King Church, she helped to establish the Eucharistic Adoration program at St. Joseph Church in Mandan. Janet was also actively involved with the World Apostolate of Fatima for the Bismarck Diocese, serving nine years as its president. She continued to serve as an advisor, especially in the World Wide Children’s Holy Hour program.

Janet will be missed by her husband, Doug, Mandan; daughters, Andrea Helbing, Mandan, and Traci (Gabe) Archard and their children, Sara and Erin, Bismarck; son, Doug J. (Kelly) Helbing and their children, Jordan, Jacob and Kiera, Bismarck; sisters, Mary Lou (Ted) Weeks, Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, Canada, Linda (Bob) Kunkel and Kathy (Irv) Behnke, both of Dubuque, Iowa, and JoAnne Kiefer, Garland, Texas; brothers, Joseph M. (Joan) Blasen, William (Barbara) Blasen and Richard (Kathleen) Blasen, all of Dubuque, and Michael Blasen, Minneapolis, Minn; and brother-in-law, Carl Anglin, Dubuque.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Luane Anglin.
