  • LUCIUS TANNER, SR 1764-1842 - As regards the revolutionary service of Lucius Tanner, Sr., nothing is definitely known except upon his head stone where he and his wife Martha (daughter of Josiah) are buried is the inscription "Who served a short time in the Revolutionary War". He was born November 17, 1764, according to the date on his monument and the battle of King's Mountain on the line of the Carolinas was October 7, 1780. So he was nearly 16 years old at that time. The American Heritage book on the Revolution pp. 340 states "The patriots lacked organized armies but certain guerrilla activities hurt the enemy badly. Rebel raiders drifted out of dismal swamps to strike at dismal outposts, gobble up supply trains and wreck Tory formations, etc.". Francis Marion, the "Swamp FOX" that the British seemingly could not capture, and his group of patriots that appeared from nowhere and disappeared in like manner, had no uniforms except a tight fitting round cap with a crescent shaped badge pinned to it with the inscription "Liberty or Death" the motto of the South Carolina Militia. With the loose military discipline under General Gates before being replaced by General Green, many services might go unrecorded and the South Carolina Militia also had a loose set of records, all or this rather implied by the American Heritage Book. Josiah, being ten years older than Lucius Sr. was about 26 at the time of the Battle of King's Mountain and his service is well recorded as Lieutenant or Horse in Captain McBee's Company of Colonel Roebuck's regiment of Colonel James William's Forces. Lucius, Sr. and Martha are buried about four miles west of Greensburg in the Nowery Cemetery, a small cemetery with & stone wall around it, back from the road a piece and. not used now.
    While on Hubert Tanner's way back to, Indiana from Florida several years ago, He stopped at New Castle, Henry county Kentucky (formerly Jefferson County) and went to the Court House to try to find just where Josiah Tanner located when he came to Kentucky. He did not locate any deed to Josiah Tanner; but they all located on or near the Little Kentucky River which is about eight miles west of New Castle, in Henry County. Hubert Tanner did locate this purchase of land by Lucius Tanner, Sr., in 1822 which was quite some time after landing in Kentucky, and he copied this as a whole on account of the crude description used in those surveys. Viz--Henry County, Kentucky, Now Castle, Deed Record #10, pp. 234. This indenture made this 6th day of July in the year of our Lord, 1822, between William Taylor and Suzannah Taylor, his wife of County of Shelby and Hubbard Taylor and Clarissa Taylor, his wife of the County of Clark, all of the State of Kentucky of one part, and Lucius Tanner of the County of Henry and State aforesaid of the other part:
    WITTNESSETH: that the said William Taylor and Suzannah his wife and Hubbard 'Taylor and Clarissa Taylor, his wife for and in consideration of the sum of $550.00 to them in hand paid (receipt hereof is hereby acknow1edged) have granted bargained and sold to said Lucius Tanner and his heirs forever certain tract or parcel of land lying and situated in the County of Henry and State of Kentucky being a part of the Charles M. Thurston's 4000 acre survey on the waters of Little Kentucky which said tract hereby contains 100 acres and bounded as follows to Wit: Beginning at two beech and elm trees in division line of the heirs of Charles Thurston and with this line south 68 1/2° west, 113 poles to a beech thence South 2l 1/2° East 142 poles to the stone between two marked beeches, thence north 68 1/2° East 113 poles to two beeches and a walnut on north side of a branch thence north 2340 West 142 poles to the bringing together, with the appurtenances to have and to hold said tract or parcel of land together with all singular the appurtenances belonging or in any wise appertaining with Lucius Tanner and his heirs forever. And the said William Taylor and Hubbard Taylor do covenant to and with the said Lucius Tanner do warrant and forever defend the premises hereby conveyed or intended, to be conveyed unto him the said Lucius Tanner and his heirs against the claim of themselves and their heirs and all persons claiming the same, under by, or from or through them and against claims of all persons whatsoever. In testimony whereof the said William Taylor and Suzzan his wife hereunto set their hands and Hubbard Taylor and Clarissa Taylor his wife here unto set their hands and seals this 6th day of July 1822.

    Lucius Tanner, Sr. sold this farm in Kentucky Deed Book 143 Deed of Lucius. and "Patsy" Tanner his wife, (same description) for $1700.00 to Abrahan Smith and the balance in 2 years Feb 11, 1831. They evidently lived on this farm 8 to 9 years but the three children were born prior to purchase of the farm, somewhere in Kentucky.

    Deed Book No 2, pp. 265 Nathaniel Tracy January 30, l805 bought 300 acres in Henry County on the Little Kentucky.

    Lucius Sr. moved from Kentucky with his family, wife and three children about 1831. Lucius Jr. thought they first stopped somewhere between Greensburg and Lawrenceberg, but as the McGannons came also from Kentucky and were located in Indiana prior to the Tanners, it may be that the Lucius Tanner, Sr. family stopped for a short time there near Dupont. Simpson Tanner entered his farm about five miles southwest of Greensburg the next year 1932, and Thomas McGannon the first son of Derby McGannon had married E1enor Tanner, daughter of Josiah 1813 so the two families were acquainted. This Elenor was an aunt of Calamatta McGannon that married Simpson so visiting between the two families resulted in the marriage of Simpson Tanner and Calamatta McGannon, the subject of this discourse and their descendents.

  • SIMPSON TANNER- (Lucius Sr. and Martha Dau of Josiah) Simpson Tanner born in Oldham County, Kentucky May 30, 1813. Calamatta McGannon, his wife born in Kentucky June 15, 1818. Probably became acquainted as Simpson's Aunt Elenor married Calamatta's uncle Thomas McGannon or the whole families might have been acquainted in Kentucky as Derby McGannon moved to Indiana in 1819 while Elenor Tanner and Thomas McGannon were married in 1813, probably in Kentucky. Lucius, Sr. sold his Kentucky farm 183l and with his family moved to Indiana. Simpson entered his farm southwest of Greensburg Certificate No. 3, U.S. Entry, November 13, 1832 for the E of the NE of Sec 25 Twp 10 N R 8 E and all of N.W. of Sec 30 Twp 10 N R9E. This farm now belongs to Miss Helen Bussell, Greensburg, whose grandfather bought it of Simpson. Simpson's will executed 1-25-1887, probated 11-5-1887

    Lucius, Jr. was born after his grandfather Lucius had died so did not talk much about him. Neither did he talk much about his father except small things that happened. He did state that his father was a large man and that when a boy he helped around the farm and assisted his father Simpson clear some land, sometimes piling up very large logs and burning them to get rid of them. Just east of the farm where there used to be a mill and the Indians used to live there called Jaquneck Corner there was about 30 acres cleared. The rest of the land was native timber.

    The two story brick house on the farm of Simpson was built about the year 1874-5 and the double and loft hewed log house with the later addition- frame house built on the west of it stood several yards to the west. Lucius Jr. never lived in the brick house nor did Calamatta, Simpson's first wife as she died in 18614. while Ira and Lucius Jr. were in the Army. It must have been well built for the floor of the side porch where we stood was of large slabs of stone about six feet long by four feet wide and probably six inches thick.. They looked like they would last forever. Simpson hauled the bricks for the house from Ohio. More interesting was the two story log barn with the puncheon floor-split logs with the flat side up. There was enough material in this barn to build six or seven barns the way they build them now. It looked like any barn from the outside for they had weather boarded the outside. There were three 80 acre plots in this farm and Simpson had another 80 farther west-near the Mowery Cemetery where Lucius Sr. and Martha his parents were buried, making 240 acres in all. Just east of the house was the Tanner School, originally wood and later built of brick. Not used as a school now. East of the School a pond which when frozen enough Was good skating. "Goose Pond College" this was called by some as geese were in the pond in the summer. Lucius, Jr. taught this school for one year after the war.

    After visiting the Simpson Tanner farm and the Mowery Cemetery, a little west and north of the Tanner farm, we go to the City Cemetery where the Tanner plot is close to the front gate just to the left of the large monument in front of the gate. Here Simpson, his wife, Calamatta, Anna Doles, and Orlando Doles her husband, Lucy Jane and Sarah E. are buried. To the east and north of this plot in the newer part of the cemetery lie the graves of Achsah (Axie) Doles, her daughter Alma (Thompson) Wilhelm, and Alma's husband Fred Wilhelm. The lot belonged to Aunt Axie but the title was in Fred's name .

    The following interesting story was told by Lucius Tanner, Jr. about his aunt Achsah Tanner, daughter of Lucius Tanner, Sr. and sister or Simpson.

    Achsah who married John Wells, was born September 21, l814, and John had sold his farm in Indiana and was planning to move to Iowa. The money they received for the farm was all in twenty dollar gold pieces, how many was not said; but in those days travel was somewhat dangerous on account of holdups and robberies. So Achsah's mother, Martha, wife of Lucius, Sr. and daughter of Josiah, sewed those gold pieces in a petticoat, round and round so they would not fall out, and Achsah wore that heavy petticoat all the way to Iowa and arrived there safely with the money..

    Another incident was told by Dr. Frank Lewis, now deceased, whose grandmother was a sister to Calamatta McGannon-Tanner. Thinks the McGannon that married Elizabeth Tanner was a Jack McGannon and went-to Minnesota near Rochester. He had one son killed by the Indians. A brother Tom (in Civil War) at that time dreamed about the Indians, sent the family to the blockhouse, and then went to look for his brother. He finally found him, dead, in the fork of a tree with nine dead Indians in front of him. Tom, thereafter, killed any Indians he saw.

    Lucius Tanner, Jr. told of a conversation he overheard be-tween his father Simpson and his father-in-law Zachariah McGannon about the slavery question. Simpson was an Abolitionist and Zachariah a Democrat. He heard Zachriah say "Well he would not mind having a couple of them (Negroes) on his farm right now." They quit arguing after that.

    Father Lucius Tanner, Jr. said that Walter (or Reuben) as Dr. Lewis thought had at least two sons, Tom a lawyer and an older brother, Zack.

    The Simpson Tanner farm now owned by Miss Helen Bussell ,Greensburg, Indiana. Simpson's will executed l-25-l887, probated 11-5-l887.

    Lucius Tanner Jr. saw Lincoln upon two different occasions. The first was when he had just enlisted and was on his way in Washington to join his company which was organized in Greensburg. The other time was when Lincoln was visiting the army with General Burnsides. The two rode by on horses, the General straight in the saddle, and Lincoln with his long legs too long for the stirrups and slightly humped over and with the plug hat. The soldiers said after they had passed "before and after taking".
