He was born April 13, 1914, in Stockton, Ill. to Eddie M. and Lillian E. (Reynolds) Cowles.

The Cowles family moved from Stockton to Maquoketa, Iowa, and subsequently to Platteville, Wis., where they bought and operated a photographic studio.

He graduated from high school in Platteville, Wis., in 1932, ranked third in a class of 200. He went to Platteville State Teachers College, now the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and earned a bachelor's degree in 1936.

On Dec. 25, 1936, he married Lucia (Sally) Gehrke in Stratton.

After returning from the Navy in 1946, he earned a master's degree from Colorado State College of Education, now the University of Northern Colorado, in Greeley. He was a member of Lambda Sigma Tau and Phi Delta Kappa.

Mr. Cowles taught in the public schools in Seibert, Willard, Greeley, Estes Park and Fort Lupton and in Dodgeville, Wis.

After leaving teaching, Mr. Cowles worked at Greeley Gas Co. He retired from Greeley Gas in 1979 as assistant manager, followed by 20 years as a volunteer at North Colorado Medical Center. He was active in civic affairs, Jaycees and Gloria Christi Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Cowles of Monte Vista; a son, Paul Cowles and wife Garienan of Creede; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Cowles.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Gloria Christi. A private inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Greeley.

Contributions may be made to the Gloria Christi Lutheran Church Building Fund in care of Stoddard Funeral Home.
