Marge and Jim Shearing made a great impression on Peter Murray'sgrandmother Freda (Mrs. E. G. D. Murray) when she visited them around1980, as marvellously kind, interesting, and accomplished people, anddescribed her visit in almost photographic detail. Marge kept up anextensive correspondence on family affairs as well as personal contactsthat could truly be said to have bound her far flung extended familytogether as it never had been before. Marge and Jim moved from Bruinrugfarm in 1988, after 56 years there, to a smaller retirement house inBeaufort West, but their son Andy continued to manage the farm. Margedied on June 16, 1992, after a stroke, having never fully recovered herstrength after a fall a year before. They had two children.

After his retirement he still ran one small farm,'Rockwood.' For many years he was the South African Representative ofthe London Wool Brokers, and also for many years served as vice-presidentand president of the National Wool Growers Association. He also took anactive part in management of many sports organizations. For 20 years hewas Chairman of the Graaff Reinet Mohair Growers Association. He made agreat impression on Freda (Mrs. E. G. D.) Murray who described him as a'cheerful, marvellous personality' who overcame many misfortunes. He wasshot and injured accidentally at age 6 (saved by Dr. G. A. E. Murray),later had both legs totally crippled by polio, and after retirement wasparalysed and near death from bee stings but recovered. He marriedMinnie Edwards Trollip, 'Tom.' Eventually, in old age they moved to 77Donkin Street in Graaff Reinet. In February 1987 she was gravely illwith heart and kidney condition, then being about 79 years old anddescribed by Marge Shearing as 'one of the finest characters I have everknown.' George and 'Tom' had five children.

  • Thomas Everitt McDonald Murray Information received from Peter Murray in 1997 shows that Thomas EverittMcDonald Murray, 'Tim,' born June 9, 1910, was a farmer at Roode Bloemfarm, continued to live there after retirement, and died August 12, 1991,aged 81. He had an important position in the Rotary Club and numerousother appointments, and travelled all the time. He served in World WarII and was taken prisoner when his regiment was captured at Tobruk, andwas in a P.O.W. camp in Italy for a year before escaping into themountains with a friend. There they lived in hiding for another year,keeping alive on wild plants, snails, etc. They were fed too by a familyof peasants (at great risk to themselves) whenever possible. He got homein July 1944, and had visited his Italian peasant family whenever he hadbeen overseas, i.e. 1952, 1970, 1972, and 1976. He was a South AfricanFriesland Judge, and had judged in various African countries, includingthree times in Rhodesia. He was president of the South African FrieslandBreeders Association and, as of 1979 or so had been for at least 15 or 16years. He attended World Conferences in Italy in 1972, and in England in1976 (at which he was the longest serving president of any FrieslandBreeders Association anywhere in the world). In 1970 he and his wifeMarie were guests of the Arabian Horse Breeders of the U.K., of theBritish Friesland Breeders Society, of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland,of the Canadian Holstein Friesland Association, of the ExecutiveSecretary of the Holstein Breeders Association of America, and were takenon a visit of the top Studs in the United States. As of 1979 he had alsofor about eight years been president of the South African StudbockAssociation. He died unexpectedly from a massive heart attack in August1991, a great shock to all who knew him.
