He was surrounded by his wife and family at the time of his death.
    Cletus was born into this world on April 13, 1932, on a farm near Remsen, the son of John and Susan (Treinen) Schiltz. He received his first years of education in the rural school system and the remaining years at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. After graduating in 1949, he became a farm laborer in the Remsen area. On March 12, 1953, he entered the U.S. Army. He received his basic training at Fort Riley, Kan. He served in Korea during the Korean War, and was discharged Jan. 11, 1955. He then returned to the Remsen area and was again engaged in farming.
    On Oct. 11, 1955, he married Marjorie Kessenich at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Neptune, rural Hinton. They made their home near Remsen, where they were engaged in farming until retiring in 2003. In 1986, he began working as a meat inspector for the USDA retiring from that position on July 8, 2005.
    He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Council and was Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight for the Monsignor Schemmel Council in Remsen for several years. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for more than 50 years. He was Scout master for the Boy Scouts of America in Remsen for five years in the late 1960s. He served on both St. Mary's grade school and high school boards and was a past president of the high school board. He was a member of Post 220 American Legion and Post 3328 V.F.W. of Remsen and Post 0729 American Legion of Des Moines.
    He loved his wife and family, spending time with his grandchildren and traveling out west. He enjoyed living in the country and loved sitting down to a competitive game of cards with his family and friends.
    Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Remsen; five daughters, Debbie and her husband, Mike Swaynie of Littleton, Colo, Jean Haverkamp and her special friend, Mike Ruden, both of Remsen, Geralyn and her husband, Alan Hoefling of Marcus, Carmen and her husband, Rodney Wittkop of Worland Wyo., and Mary Lynn and her husband Dakin Schultz of Moville; four sons and their wives, Jeff and Lisa, Kevin and Faith, Rodney and Kris, Randy and Laura, all of Remsen; 27 grandchildren; three sisters, Rosemary Forkenbrock of Junction City, Kan., Armella and her husband, Larry Kurth of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kathleen "Kitty" Pick of Remsen; a brother-in-law, Norman and his wife, Betty Treinen of Fort Dodge; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Callista and her husband, Pete Konz, Mathilda Treinen, Clarinda and her husband, Ken Holt, Loretta and her husband, Medard George, Norma and her husband, Clyde Means; and one brother, Vernon and his wife, Darlene Schiltz.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Revs. Timothy Johnson and Jerry Stressman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen.
    Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Catholic Order of Foresters followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service all at the funeral home.
    Casketbearers will be Jeff Schiltz, Kevin Schiltz, Rodney Schiltz, Randy Schiltz, Mike Swaynie, Alan Hoefling, Rod Wittkop and Dakin Schultz.
    Knights of Columbus honorary bearers will be Richard Boever, Donald Ortmann, Timothy Russell, Gilbert Schroeder, Dennis Slota and Lloyd Wolf.
    Catholic Order of Foresters honorary bearers will be Clayton Harnack, Donald Konz, Steve Pick, Leedell Treinen, Max Treinen and Richard Wurth.
