Gerald was born June 28, 1949 in Dickeyville, Wisconsin, son of Henry and Mary Ann (Kieler) Melssen. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1967. On December 21, 1974 he was united in marriage to Sandra King at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Epworth, IA. He worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 40 years until his retirement in May of 2012. Gerry was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed camping, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is a Veteran having served in the United States Air Force for four years, three of those years were served in Bitburg, Germany.
Gerald was a member of the St. Patrick’s Parish in Epworth, IA and the Epworth John White American Legion Post #650.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Melssen of Epworth, IA; three children, Sara (Jay) Upmann of Stockton, IL, Dawn (Tyson) Yohe of Wilton, IA, and Eldon (Jodi) Melssen of Burlington, IA; the pride of his life was his five grandchildren, Cameron and Caeden Upmann, Maxwell and Madelyn Yohe and Carter Melssen; his mother, Mary Ann Melssen of Dickeyville, WI; seven siblings, Mary Jo (Ronald) Lau of Clarksville, TN, Doris (Harold) Kelly of Dubuque, Lee Ann Melssen and Linda Morshead both of Polk City, IA, Donald Melssen of Phoenix, AZ, Henry Melssen of Dickeyville, WI, and David (Rita) Melssen of Dickeyville, WI; one sister-in-law, Ellen LaPage of Dyersville, IA; one brother-in-law, Harvey (Beta) King of Epworth, IA.

Together they farmed for years in the Union area, rural Platteville. She was a loving, full-time wife, wonderful mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Parish, St. Mary's CCW and a devout Catholic.

Marian enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, cooking and visiting with her friends. She was enjoyed by the staff at Heartland Health Care Center. Marian is survived by three daughters, Doris A. (Jim) Doherty, Onalaska, Jane L. Lange, Scottsdale, and Arlene R. (Steve) Adams, Cassville; two sons, Daniel E. (Judy) Lange, Appleton, and David J. Lange, Pittsboro, N.C; eight grandchildren; a step and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin, in 1984; two sons, Eugene in 1972, and Michael in 1985; her parents; two brothers, Edmund and Joseph Salzmann; and a step-grandchild, Brandon Cowen. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Platteville with Father Charles Schluter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. She is survived by her husband, Oswin; 11 children, Roseann (David) Wiederholt, Kieler, Rita (Donald) Fluhr, East Dubuque, Karen (Dan) Timmerman, Kieler, Lou (Richard) Dalsing, Kieler, Judy (Owen) Adrian, Cassville, Tranel, Mary Agnes John (Connie) Tranel, Thomas (Lin) Tranel, Steve (Joan) Tranel, Dan (Jennifer) Tranel, Larry (Tina) Tranel, and Joann (Tony) Jansen, all of Cuba City, 50 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, John (Evelyn) Lange, Platteville, and Edmund (Mary) Lange, Dickeyville, and many nieces and nephews. He was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who instilled Christian values and a strong work ethic in his family. He was a great supporter of Catholic education. Ossie enjoyed playing cards and was also an avid Brewer fan. Ossie loved all his children and grandchildren and had a passion for helping them succeed in their chosen careers. He enjoyed helping his sons on their farms. He will always be remembered for his peaceful demeanor, his smile, and his sense of humor. John was born on April 21, 1929, in Jamestown Township, Grant County, the son of Frank and Louise (Kunkel) Lange. He was united in marriage to Evelyn M. (Digman) Lange on August 5, 1953, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kieler. John loved farming and having his children close by. He always had at least one child with him while farming so it seemed only natural that he and Rich would farm together for years. When John moved off the farm, his grandson, Ryan, bought his farm to continue the farming legacy on Pleasant Valley Road. John was an usher at St. Mary’s Church for many years, a member of the Catholic Knights, American Legion, K.C. Council, the NFO and Organic Valley Co-op.

John is survived by seven children, Gary (Robert Van Dyke) of Rancho Mirage, CA; Joe (Sandy) Lange of Deerfield, WI; Mary Jane (Kevin) Colopy of Zanesville, OH; Ann (Larry) Miesen of Cuba City, WI; Pat (Dave) Melzer of Elk Grove Village, IL; Joan (Randy) Check of Reedsburg, WI; Cathy (Herb) Yanke of Prairie du Sac, WI; daughter-in-law Patty Lange; twenty grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Lange of Dickeyville, WI, Bernita Digman of Hazel Green, WI; Harriet Lindner of Sparta, WI; and many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was born on March 19, 1928, in Jamestown Township, Grant County, the daughter of August J. and Josephine M. (Welter) Digman. She was united in marriage to John M. Lange on August 5, 1953, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kieler. Devoting her life to God, her family and others, she spent her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, homemaker, and friend, who always put others needs before her own and always found time for others.

Evelyn was a humble hero throughout her life as she served others her entire life. From volunteering at church and school when her children were young to making countless meals, phone calls and visits to those in need along with making quilts and thousands of rosaries through church. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville and was a part of St. Mary’s CCW, Altar Society and Vocation Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Evelyn enjoyed music, baking (especially her famous Grandpa bars), making rosaries and most especially babysitting her grandchildren as she welcomed everyone into her home.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 59 years, John; eight children, Richard (Patty) Lange of Platteville; Gary Lange (R. Van Dyke) of Rancho Mirage, CA; Joe (Sandy) Lange of Deerfield, WI; Mary Jane (Kevin) Colopy of Zanesville, OH; Ann (Larry) Miesen of Cuba City, WI; Pat (Dave) Melzer of Elk Grove Village, IL; Joan (Randy) Check of Reedsburg, WI; Cathy (Herb) Yanke of Prairie du Sac, WI; twenty grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; one sister, Harriet Lindner of Cashton, WI; sisters- and brother-in-law, Berneita Digman of Hazel Green, WI; Leona Digman of Lancaster, WI; Eddie and Mary Lange of Dickeyville, WI; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marcie Dietzel, and two brothers, Lavern and Edwin Digman.

Eddie was born on November 4, 1932, on the home farm in Paris Township, Wisconsin, the son of Frank and Louise (Kunkel) Lange. He married Mary L. Hoffmann on October 21, 1961, in Otter Creek, Iowa.

Eddie graduated from Loras Academy in 1951. After graduation he served in the Army from May of 1956 until his honorable discharge in April of 1958. He was a farmer, taking charge of the home farm. Eddie was also employed by Swiss Colony, worked as an insurance adjuster for Jamestown Mutual, and delivered the Shopping News for 20 plus years. He enjoyed summer vacations with his family, fishing and hunting. Eddie loved to make homemade wine for many years. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Knights.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Dickeyville; a son, Roger (Vonda) Lange, of Platteville; four daughters, Sheila Udelhofen, of Potosi, Jean Rolfe and Karla (Dave) Leuchs, both of Dubuque, and Julie (Bill) Digman, of Cuba City; a brother, John Lange, of Platteville; and thirteen grandchildren, Jessica, Tiffany and Brandon Lange, Brianna and Corey Udelhofen, Jacob, Andrew, Charles and Jeremy Rolfe, and Dominick, Danielle, Dylan and Dustin Digman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Agnes Tranel; a brother-in-law, Ossie Tranel; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Lange.

Catherine was born on November 27, 1924, in Paris Township, Wisconsin, the daughter of Adolph J. and Anna M. (Averkamp) Salzmann. She married Arnold Lange on August 20, 1947. He preceded her in death on March 6, 1978.

Catherine attended Holy Ghost Grade School for eight years, attended high school for one year in Tennyson, and received her GED in 1979. Arnie and she established Arnie's Recreation Center in Dickeyville in 1949 and operated it until 1978. She worked as a teacher's aide in preschool and kindergarten at the Dickeyville Elementary School from 1979-1981. Then she worked at the Cuba City Nursing Home in the dietary department from 1981-1989. At that time she retired and took care of her grandchild, Kristin. Catherine was a member of Holy Ghost Parish all of her life and the Christian Mothers Group.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda M. (Thomas) Gerlich, of Cuba City; her sons Thomas F. Lange DDS, of Menasha, James J. (Joanne) Lange, of Cassville, Gerald E. Lange, of Madison, Charles W. (Marcia) Lange, of Jackson, Wisconsin, and Alan E. (Lonna) Lange, of Kiel, Wisconsin; two sisters, Helena Lawinger, of Mineral Point, and Rita (Edward) McKeon, of Darlington; a brother, John (Mary) Salzmann, of Platteville; ten grandchildren, Matthew (Karen) Lange, Rachele (Chadwick) Breuer, Douglas Lange, Ryan Gerlich, Alissa (Benjamin) Leistico, Kristin (Andrew) Weber, Adam (Becky) Lange, Jennifer (Keith) Fullhart, Laura Lange and Nicole Lange; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry; two sisters, Sr. Clara Salzmann SDS, and Marian (Ervin "Tony") Lange; two brothers, Father Edmund Salzmann and Joseph (Lillian) Salzmann; and four brothers-in-law, Bill Lawinger, Walter (Bernice) Lange, Frank (Louise) Lange, and Ira Lange.

Death2 March 1904John Mathias Frembgen died on 2 March 1904 at Sioux, Iowa, at age 38 John Frembgen, who was operated on for abscess of the liver some time ago in St Joseph's hospital, Sioux City, died at the hospital Wednesday last, March 2 at 4 pm. He was at first supposed to be recovering but erysipelas supervened with fatal results. The remains were brought home Thursday evening; the funeral services were held at St Mary's church Saturday morning, Rev O'Reilly celebrating high mass and preach an excellent discourse. The obsequies were in charge of the Catholic Order of Forrester, of which deceased was a member, and the business houses in town were closed during the services. The church was crowded to its utmost capacity and a long procession, headed by the Forresters, followed his remains to their last resting place. He was born in Dickeyville, Wis, was 39 years of age and resided in Rock Valley since 1892; was universally respected by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and six small children, besides other relatives, to mourn his loss. Sioux County (IA) Herald March 9, 1904.
