Mrs. Eula Hicks Petty Magruder, 83 native of South Carolina, was buried today in Mount Zion Cemetery after funeral services in Rockville, near Washington. Mrs. Magruder was born in the Mount Elon section of Darlington County, now Lee County, S. C, daughter of the late Percie Parrott and John Hampton Hicks.

Her father was a Confederate veteran and her grandfather, the Rev. John Hicks, was a pioneer preacher in South Carolina. She attended Greenville Female College, now Greenville Woman's College. She first married Charles G. Petty, who taught school at Montrose, Md, and after his death she married Samuel Wade Magruder, who died in 1939.

She is survived by Mrs. Arthur Ball of Washington, at whose home she died; a granddaughter, and several stepchildren. She was a Sunday school superintendent and teacher at the Little Church in the Wildwood, Bethesda, Md.

Born in Lee county he moved to Hartsville over 50 years ago having been one the towns liest settlers. Mr. Hicks was a suecessful merchant and farmer. For several years he was a deacon in the First Baptist church. Mr.

Hicks was a son of the late Jotta Hampton and Percy Parrott Hicks pioneer citizens of Darlington county. He married Miss Mamie Howle also of Darlington courty and had he lived until December 3 they would have celeprated their golden wedding anniversary.

Surviving are his widow and three sone, R. C. Hicks of Charlotte, N. W. Hampton Hicks, of Hartsville, J. Allen Hicks of Charleston; one foster daughter, Mrs Katie S. Spencer of Florence; also three grandchildren Marie Hicks, Charleston, W. H. Hicks, 3rd and James Hicks, Hartsville; two sisters, Mrs. W. H. McGruder, Washington, D. and Mrs T. L. Ingram, Hartsville.

He was born April 25, 1911 in the Cypress Community of Lee County. He was the son of the late Charles B. DuBose Sr. and Martha Melissa (Mattie) Parnell DuBose. He graduated from Lamar High School in 1929, Wofford College in 1934, and in 1939 was awarded a master's from Duke University.

He taught school in McColl, Baron Dekalb, Union and Columbia. In February 1941 he was called to active duty in the U.S. Army. Enroute to China he visited cities in Australia, Ceylon, India, and Burma. He was assigned to the CBI and was in China at the end of World War II.

In 1946 he was married to Martha McDaniel in Washington Street United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1939. She died in 1978. After a three year tour at Western Maryland College, Westminister, his next assignment was in Germany. In 1956 orders sent him to Korea, later to Japan and Hawaii. His next assignment was at Fort Jackson, where he retired in 1961.

Among his decorations were the Combat Infantry Badge, The Bronze Star, The American Defense Ribbon, The AsiaticPacific Ribbon, The World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Army Commendation Ribbon. After retirement he taught English at AC Flora High School from 1961 to 1975. The 1966 AC Flora Annual was dedicated to him as Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1975. In 1980 he married Daphne Muldrow of Bishopville.

She died February 13, 1999. He is survived by his son C. (Guerry) DuBose Jr. of Arlington, stepsons, George (Charlotte) Muldrow of Marion and John Henry (Ernie) Muldrow of Lynchburg; stepdaughters, Frances (Tom) Gressette of Florence and Daphne Dickerson of Florence; step-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. He was predeceased by seven brothers, Charles DuBose of Summerville, Fred DuBose of Cyprus Community, Ray DuBose of Dillon, Ronald DuBose of Mt. Pleasant and Sinclair DuBose of Cypress Community, Max DuBose of Bishopville and James Earl DuBose of Cypress Community; three sisters, Marjorie Hicks of Concord, N.C., Dorothy Rogers of Camden and Winnie DuBose of Cypress Community. Services will be conducted at Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia on Sunday, January 21, 2007 at 3 p.m. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park located at 845 Leesburg Road in Columbia.
