She was born on April 25, 1930 in Sauk City to Reinhart and Clara (Fuchs) Knuth, and later adopted by her aunt and uncle Raymond and Laura (Fuchs) Diehl. Dee graduated from Sauk City High School in 1948 and went on to Platteville Normal School where she graduated in 1952 with a degree in elementary education and minor in physical education. She accepted her first teaching job in New Glarus, WI and taught there for a few years. She returned to Platteville and taught in Belmont, Livingston, Fennimore and Lancaster before taking a position in the Platteville Public School system teaching kindergarten at Westview Elementary. She earned her Masters in Education degree from UW-Platteville. Over her 40 years of teaching, she touched the lives of many students and families in the Platteville area. Upon retiring from teaching she continued to support education and teachers by working with other retired educators to start the Platteville Area Retired Education Association. Dee was also an active community and church member participating in several organizations: Foreign Foods, Girl Scout leader, PEO, United Methodist Women, Sunday school teacher and church bell choir. Dee’s greatest joy in life was watching her family especially her grandchildren grow and spending time with them. Countless road trips, singing John Jacob Jingle Hiemershmidt, reading books, playing Candy Land, Uno and later playing a friendly game of cards. Dee is survived by her four children, Michael Gray of Platteville, Carla (Tom) Rawson of Richland Center, David Gray of Platteville, Denice (Pete) Koss of Green Bay; seven grandchildren Sean Matthews, Jessica (Joe) Kotek, James Rawson, Jacqui (Justin) Crull, Laura (Nathan) Kemp, Morgan Koss, Matthew Koss; five great grandchildren Liam Matthews, Jade Matthews, Ella Kotek, Ethan Kotek and William Crull; former sister-in-law, a niece and two nephews. Dee is preceded in death by her birth and adopted parents, former brother-in-law, grandson, ex-husband: the father of their children and a niece. Friends may call the Platteville United Methodist Church, 1065 Lancaster Street, on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Funeral service to follow the visitation at the church with Pastor Tammy officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Sauk City Cemetery. |

She passed away August 7, 2024, surrounded by her family, in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 85 years. Marlene was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and was an active church member throughout her life. She was raised with her three brothers on their family farms in Clay and Lincoln counties, and went to country schools before attending and graduating from Alcester High School in 1957. Following graduation, she worked in Sioux Falls until she was united in marriage to Paul Voegeli on June 28, 1959 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester. They made their home on a farm east of Beresford where they raised their four children. Marlene loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them and providing for them. She worked hard as a farm wife and enjoyed doing fieldwork in the spring and continued to help with harvest well into her retirement years. Following Paul’s death in 2000, Marlene continued to live on the farm until late 2017 when she moved into Beresford where she resided until February of this year. Marlene was an excellent homemaker. She was a great cook and enjoyed baking for her family and hosting gatherings. She was a talented and meticulous seamstress and enjoyed sewing various items for family and friends. She also sewed many church banners for Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Her other hobbies included quilting, hardanger, ceramics, painting, and jigsaw puzzles. Marlene loved being outdoors gardening, landscaping, and caring for her yard and flowers. Her daily coffee times and friendships with the ladies at the flower shop were very important to her. She also enjoyed traveling and went on numerous bus trips with friends and visited her brother in Australia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; a son in infancy, and her parents. Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Beth (Robert) Schlup of Sioux Falls, Elaine (Dean) Hammer of Dell Rapids, Allen (Lisa) Voegeli and Charles Voegeli all of Beresford; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Laura (Christopher) Koelker and their three children, Hudson, Grace and Micah; Allison (Jake) Harris and their three children, Avery, Casey and Olivia; Marissa (Anthony) Dyk, Hannah Hammer all of Sioux Falls, Benjamin Hammer and his fiancé, Lauren Solerno of Omaha, Chloe Voegeli (Tanner Knutson) and Alex Voegeli of Beresford. Also surviving are Marlene’s three brothers, Rodney (Ruby) Hakl of Hudson, SD, Craig (Kathy) Hakl of San Antonio, TX and Curtis (Margaret) Hakl of Townsville, Queensland, Australia, and other numerous family and friends. Funeral services will be 10AM Wednesday, August 14, 2024 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Beresford. Burial will follow at Zion Cemetery, rural Beresford. Visitation will be 5-7PM Tuesday, Aug. 13th, at the church with a 7PM prayer service. |

He attended Holy Ghost School in Dickeyville, WI, Loras Academy in Dubuque, IA and Radar School in Fort Bliss, TX. In 1953, he enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1955. He married Mary Anne Gerhards on May 24, 1955 in Tennyson, WI. John worked for 27 years at the Dubuque Packing Company and later became self-employed as an insurance agent for 12 years. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dickeyville Fire Department for 32 years and a charter member of the Dickeyville Rescue Squad, American Legion for 55 years, started the Dickeyville Slow-Pitch Softball League and the Dickeyville Athletic Club. John enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, softball, reading, traveling around the world, but most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Mary Anne; 4 children: Diane (Rob) Klaas of Janesville, WI, Brenda (Kevin) FitzPatrick of Peachtree City, GA, Rick (Valorie Semingson) Melssen of Eau Claire, WI and Thomas Melssen of Chandler, AZ; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law: Ron (Sandy) Gerhards & Jim (Maurna) Gerhards; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. She was united in marriage to Vernon Placke on October 24, 1950, at Holy Ghost Church in Dickeyville. He preceded her in death on April 11, 2014. Eileen was a devoted mother and grandmother. Spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her the most joy. She was known for her world famous chocolate chip cookies. Eileen was a fan of baseball, especially the Braves and Brewers. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards and dancing. Eileen’s faith was very important to her. She was a longtime member of both Holy Ghost and St. Joseph’s Parishes, was an officer in the Christian Mothers Society, and volunteered at the church summer garage sale for many years. Eileen is survived by her children, David (Sue) Placke, Hazel Green, WI, Patricia (Ron) Rupp, Mesa, AZ, Mary Kay Daniel, Madison, WI, Joseph (Rita) Placke, Cuba City, WI, Kenneth (Mary) Placke, Hazel Green, WI, Alan Placke, Cuba City, WI, and Lori (Randy) Wirth, Eau Claire, WI; 18 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Eileen was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Melvina (Francis) Budden and Lucille (Jerry) Kaiser; and three sisters-in-law, Rosaline Edwards, Doris (Merlyn) Wolter and Marie (Kenny) Kunkel. |

She worked at the Capital Café, the Hi-Way Café, in Potosi and later worked at The Timbers as a cook at all three places. In 1977, she went to work at Advance Transformer, where she worked many years. She liked to crochet, loved a good game euchre and especially enjoyed time with family. Darlene is survived by her children, Larry (Sandy) Howell, Chris (Jack) Williams and Randy (Kim) Howell, grandchildren, Jamie (Jeremy) Duve, Nicole Howell, Jake (Erin) Howell and Jesse Howell, eleven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, a brother Bob VanNatta and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, grandchildren, Amanda and Justin Williams, sister, June Knutson and brother, Raymond “Bud” VanNatta. Services celebrating Darlene’s life will be 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory in Platteville, WI. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of service. There she developed lifelong friends and continued with her interest in music while singing in the choir. Her parents had given her a guitar in her early teens which was an instrument she enjoyed playing most of her life. She attended General Beadle Teachers College in Madison, SD for one year. She then began teaching in rural schools in the Turner County area. Darlene was married to Juel Hofer on April 6, 1958. Two sons, Roger and Warren, were born to this union. Their working life was spent on a farm west of Viborg, SD. They raised row crops as well as livestock. Darlene and Juel moved to Centerville SD when retiring from the farm. She enjoyed being closer to grandchildren and taking in their activities. She also worked part time at the Centerville Nursing Facility where she became a resident later in life. Many winters were spent in Lemon Tree Estates in Mission, TX. Darlene volunteered as a tutor for students at a local school there. She also helped out many of the park residents that were less capable of caring for their property. She loved the many musical opportunities in the area. She spoke of going to "jams" and at times participated by playing her guitar or singing. Additionally, she directed the choir in their park for many years. Darlene will be remembered for her positive attitude. She was friendly, caring and willing to help others. She definitely had a green thumb and enjoyed her many plants and continued to work with plants after moving into nursing home facilities. Grateful for having shared her life are son, Roger (Jackie) Hofer; grandchildren, Nichole (Scott) Woizeschke, Joshua (Courtney) Hofer, Jacob (Sami) Hofer and Marlee (Jon) Gonzales; great- grandchildren, Emma, Eli, and Ezra Woizeschke, Adalynn and Oliver Hofer, and Lainey Hofer; two sisters, Joyce (Delmar) Wevik, Lyla (Dennis) Johnson; and her brother-in-law, Jennis Hofer. She was preceded in death by her spouse, Juel; her son, Warren; brother, Julian Brodland; brother-in-law, Paul Sonnenfeld; sisters-in-law, Darleen Jensen, Joyce Jorgensen, and Alma Hofer; brothers in law, Dellis Hofer, Oscar Sayler, Robert Jorgensen and Harold Jensen; and numerous nephews and nieces. Memorial services will be 10AM Monday, October 7, 2024 at The Seed Community Church, 921 Main St, Centerville, SD 57014. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30PM Sunday, Oct. 6th at Wass Funeral Chapel, 400 Wisconsin St., Centerville with a 7:30PM prayer service. |
